Alady, identified simply as Crystabel, has died after surgery at the Cynosure Aesthetic Plastic Surgery Clinics, in the Mende area of Maryland, Lagos State.

PUNCH Metro gathered that Crystabel visited the medical facility on Okunola Aina Street, Mende, for plastic surgery.

A lady, identified simply as Posha, said the victim died from the complications she had during the surgery.

Posha, who tweeted using her handle, @poshcupcake_1, said aggrieved friends and family members of the victim had been demanding justice for her. Read more

Drama as police allegedly lock up Magistrate in Lagos (Guardian)

It was a case of breaching procedural rules guiding rule of law in the country, as a power-drunk senior police officer in charge of Area D Command headquarters in Mushin, Lagos State, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Aliko Dankoli, allegedly ordered locking up of a Lagos Magistrate.

Dankoli had on Monday, May 30 ordered that a female Magistrate, name withheld, who reportedly visited the Command on a routine check of suspects in the cell-based on the Police Duty Solicitor Scheme to decongest the police cell, be detained. The Magistrate is in Ikeja Division

The Nigeria Police under the leadership of former Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Ibrahim Kpotun Idris, had on September 21, 2017, launched Force Order 20, to institutionalise the Police Duty Solicitor Scheme (PDSS), in the Nigeria Police.

PDSS was established to address the crisis of irrational and interminable pre-trial detention in Nigeria. Read more

Okada ban: Lagos set to crush another 2,228 motorcycles (Punch)

The Lagos State Task Force is set to crush another set of 2,228 impounded commercial motorcycles popularly called Okada on Friday (today).

The Chairman of the taskforce, CSP Shola Jejeloye, disclosed this in a statement on Thursday.

The statement was signed by the Director, Press and Public Affairs, Gbadeyan Abdulraheem.

Abdulraheem quoted Jejeloye as saying that the agency will intensify its effort in ensuring that all impounded motorcycles are crushed after following the due process. Read more

‘Mustapha still contesting Sanwo-Olu’s guber primary victory’ (Guardian)

Contrary to media reports, Abdul-Ahmed Mustapha has not withdrawn his petition challenging the conduct of the May 26 All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship primary in Lagos State.

The aggrieved politician claimed that the party’s Appeal Panel sought his cooperation to drop his case to avoid a repeat of the Zamfara and Rivers scenarios of 2019, where APC ended up without lawful gubernatorial candidates for the general elections.

Speaking through his counsel, Abdulmojeed Oloyede, Mustapha requested the party leadership to make public the outcome of the screening exercise conducted for all aspirants in the state and what necessitated his alleged disqualification.

Denouncing the reports that Mustapha had capitulated, the lawyer stated: “Far from it, my client would not condone injustice in whatever form and until and unless a fair and just result is achieved, my client won’t stop speaking up against flagrant disregard of our extant laws and laid down party guidelines.” Read more

Lagos guard stabs carpenter to death for climbing estate fence (Punch)

A security guard, Dayon Ayuba, has been arrested by men of the Lagos State Police Command for allegedly stabbing a carpenter, identified simply as Taiye, to death on Nitel Estate, in the Ikorodu area of the state.

PUNCH Metro gathered that Taye, who lived in the Mushin area of the state, visited his friend, Samuel Shobowale, to do some carpentry works at his residence on the estate, along Ota-Ona, Ikorodu.

After completing the work, Taiye was said to be on his way home when he decided to take a shortcut to quickly access the main road to board a vehicle to his destination.

A landlord on the estate, who gave his name Bolade, said Taiye attempted to scale the fence of the estate to link the main road when Ayuba, who was on duty, accosted him around 8.40pm. Read more

Mompha trial: Court fixes June 10 for report of parties’ proposed settlement (Guardian)

Justice Mojisola Dada of a Special Offences Court has fixed June 10 to hear a report of an agreement between social media celebrity, Ismaila Mustapha, popularly known as Mompha and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Justice Dada gave the date after both defence and prosecution counsel asked for an extension of time.

EFCC had filed an eight-count charge against Mompha and his company, Ismalob Global Investment Limited.

The anti-graft agency had alleged that Mompha conspired with others at large to launder money obtained through unlawful activities. Read more

Customs seizes contraband worth N818m, arrests 41 suspects (Vanguard)

The Federal Operation Unit, Zone ‘A’ of the Nigeria Customs Service, NCS, yesterday, said it seized over 9000 bags of foreign par-boiled rice alongside other prohibited items valued at N818.1million in the month of May.

Speaking to newsmen in its Ikeja office in Lagos, Controller of the Unit, Comptroller Hussein Ejibinu, said that a total of 41 suspects have also been arrested in connection with the trade infraction, adding that the Unit in a renewed vigor to fight menace of smuggling, had re-strategized its operations to block revenue leakages and to curb the import/export of prohibited goods.

Ejibunu also said that the Unit has employed the use of intelligence and meticulous documentary checks to recover the noticeably lost revenues, intercepted goods suspected to have contravened Customs laws and seized those that fall under the prohibition lists.

He said: “Citizens are once again, reminded of the need to support and key into the federal government’s policy aimed at supporting the growth of its local product. Read more

Nigeria bans bushmeat to prevent monkeypox spread (BBC)

The Nigerian government has banned the sale of bushmeat as a precaution to stop the spread of monkeypox.

Six cases have been detected in the country this month bringing to 21 the number of confirmed infections this year, the authorities said.

Experts say it is possible that the virus can be caught by eating meat from an infected animal. But this is not the most common transmission route.

Monkeypox, a mild viral infection, is endemic in Nigeria.

It occurs mostly in remote areas, near tropical rainforests. Read more

Patrick James Errington and Teya Hollier win $10K RBC Bronwen Wallace Award for emerging writers (CBC)

Alberta’s Patrick James Errington and Ontario’s Teya Hollier are the winners of the 2022 RBC Bronwen Wallace Award for Emerging Writers.

They will each receive a $10,000 prize.

The announcement was made at an in-person event in Toronto. It was hosted by past award finalist and juror Irfan Ali.

The award was established in 1994 in memory of poet and short story writer Bronwen Wallace. It is currently sponsored by the RBC Emerging Artists initiative.

Errington won for his poetry collection, If Fire, Then Bird. Errington is an Alberta poet, translator, literary critic and academic based in Edinburgh. He is the author of two chapbooks, Glean and Field Studies and his work has appeared in The Poetry Review, Best New Poets and The Fiddlehead. Read more

Queen pulls out of Jubilee thanksgiving service (BBC)

The Queen will not attend Friday’s Jubilee service at St Paul’s Cathedral after experiencing discomfort while watching Thursday’s parade at Buckingham Palace.

The decision was made with “great reluctance” after considering the “journey and activity required”, the palace said.

However, she did take part in a beacon lighting ceremony on Thursday evening.

Four days of celebrations marking the Queen’s 70-year reign began earlier.

Metal detectorist believes he’s found King John’s 800-year-old lost treasure (Metro)

A metal detectorist has began excavating a farm field where he believes he has found the 800-year-old long lost treasure of King John.

Raymond Kosschuk, 63, has been waiting for two years to get approval from the relevant authorities to begin digging at the site in Sutton Bridge, Lincolnshire.

The mechanical engineer says he is ‘100 per cent certain’ medieval artefacts uncovered in 2020 at the undisclosed location belonged to the former King of England.

King John, who signed the Magna Carta a year before his death in 1216, lost the treasure during an ill fated crossing of The Wash – an estuary that divides Lincolnshire and Norfolk on October 12, 1216. Read more

In an emotional speech broadcast live on national television, United States President Joe Biden has called on lawmakers to pass legislation to curb gun violence in the country, a week after 19 children were shot dead by a gunman in their school.

Biden proposed several laws, including a ban on assault weapons, which was allowed to lapse under a Republican administration in 2004. Other proposals included a limit on high capacity magazines, secure storage laws, “red flag” laws, universal background checks, and the removal of protection laws for gun manufacturers.

Ukraine war: Zelensky says Russia controls a fifth of Ukrainian territory (BBC) 

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky says that Russian forces have seized 20% of his country’s territory, as Moscow’s invasion nears its 100th day.

Addressing lawmakers in Luxembourg, he added that the front line extended for more than 1,000km (621 miles).

“All combat-ready Russian military formations are involved in this aggression,” he told MPs via videolink.

Russian forces have been intensifying attacks on the city of Severodonetsk in the eastern Donbas region.

UK defence officials say Russia has seized most of the city and are making “steady local gains, enabled by a heavy concentration of artillery”. Read more

World basketball governing body, FIBA has confirmed the withdrawal of Nigeria from the 2022 FIBA Women’s World Cup slated for September in Australia.

FIBA, in a statement it released Thursday said the confirmation followed its inability to extract a confirmation of Nigeria’s change of stand from the Nigeria Basketball Federation, NBBF.

According to FIBA, despite its  communications with and request to the Nigerian federation, “it has become clear that against the circumstances created by the government’s decision, the NBBF is unable to confirm its participation in the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup 2022.” Read more

Son Heung-min was awarded South Korea’s highest sporting honour on Thursday after the Tottenham forward became the first Asian player to win the Premier League Golden Boot.

The 29-year-old was given the Cheongnyong Medal by President Yoon Suk-yeol before South Korea’s friendly against Brazil at Seoul World Cup Stadium.

Son, dressed in a dark suit, walked into the packed stadium as the crowd cheered, with a banner reading: “We are living in the era of world-class Son Heung-min.”

Lazio coach Maurizio Sarri has extended his contract with the Roman outfit until 2025, the Serie A club confirmed on Thursday.

The 63-year-old former Chelsea, Juventus and Napoli boss agreed a two-year extension to the deal he signed in June last year after Simone Inzaghi left for Inter Milan.

“Coach Maurizio Sarri has renewed the contract with the club extending the expiry of the agreement until 2025,” the club said in a statement.

German international defender Antonio Rudiger has joined Spanish and European champions Real Madrid from Chelsea, the two clubs confirmed on Thursday.

The 29-year-old centre-back, who was out of contract at Chelsea, has signed a four-year deal in the Spanish capital, Real announced.

In a statement on their official website, Madrid said Rudiger would be unveiled at a press conference at the club’s training ground on June 20.

Sweden’s Ingrid Lindblad shot the lowest score by an amateur in US Women’s Open history in the first round of this year’s championship.

Her six-under 65 at Pine Needles included seven birdies and sent the 22-year-old to the top of the leaderboard at the second women’s major of 2022.

“I hit a few close to the pin and my putting was great,” said Lindblad, who played with her idol Annika Sorenstam.

“It just worked from the fairway to the green. It’s a great US Open course.”
