The death of Dr Megafu Nwando Chinelo, who boarded the attacked Kaduna-bound train with hundreds of passengers, has elicited a flurry of reactions.

Her death with some other identified victims sparked outrage especially on social media.

The Nation learnt Chinelo died from the wounds she sustained in the deadly attack.

For the first time in months, All Progressives Congress National Leader, Bola Tinubu, stepped out together with his wife, Remi, to celebrate his 70th birthday anniversary.

Both Tinubu and the Senator representing Lagos Central in the red chamber have not been seen together in public for about a year but the duo stepped out together on Tuesday at Eko Hotels in Lagos, the venue of the 13th Bola Ahmed Tinubu Colloquium with the theme, ‘Pivoting Nigeria Into The New Order’.

The former Lagos State governor from 1999 to 2007 and APC presidential aspirant and his wife arrived the venue at about 02:30pm to the rousing applause of dignitaries including governors, traditional rulers, business and political leaders.

Since May 2021 when she was involved in a shouting match with some Nigerians at Marriot Hotel in Lagos, venue of a public hearing on constitutional review, Remi has kept off the media glare. Read more

We’ll use groundwater to address scarcity in Lagos –Engineers (Punch)

THE Nigerian Institute of Environmental Engineers has assured residents of Lagos State that it would utilise groundwater to tackle the problems of unsafe water and water scarcity.

Residents of the state have been reacting to the water scarcity experienced in Ketu, Ikorodu, Surulere and Alimosho areas of the state.

The National President of NIEE, Sesan Odukoya, during an interview with our correspondent on Monday in Alausa, Ikeja, said the institute would partner with the government to ensure availability of potable water.

He said, “Water scarcity in the state is a concern to us because people must have access to clean water. The level of compliance coming from the water cooperation is less than 25 per cent and the type of water residents readily have access to, is not potable. Article VI of the Sustainable Development Goals talks about access to water and sanitation, and this water has to be potable. Read more

Buhari faults Nigeria’s multiple, overlapping tax system (ThisDay)

President Muhammadu Buhari has faulted the nation’s current multiple and overlapping tax system, saying it’s inefficient and creates uncertainty and instability. 

He has, therefore, canvassed for efficient tax administration to boost the nation’s revenue base.

Speaking Tuesday while declaring open the second annual National Tax Dialogue Week at the Conference Hall of the State House, Abuja, the president said he was worried at the current tax system in the country, characterised by fragmented administration, multiple and sometimes, overlapping taxes.

Oasis Muslim Care Foundation, a non-governmental organisation that cares for sick Muslims, has advised students to shun drug abuse.

The foundation gave the advice during its 7th Secondary Schools Public Health Enlightenment programme last Wednesday at Barakat Community Grammar School, Ilorin, Kwara State.

The guest lecturer, Dr. Muhammad Fawaz Abubakar of the Kwara State University Medical Centre spoke on the topic “Drug Misuse, Abuse and Addiction.”

American Senate honours Nigerian teenager, others for winning basketball championship (Punch)

The Senate of the United States of America has honoured an 18-year-old Nigerian, Prince Raphael Akinyemi, for winning a basketball championship for the State of Maryland.

Raphael is the son of a First Class traditional ruler in Ogun State, the Eselu of Iselu land in the Yewa-North Local Government Area of the state, Oba Akintunde Akinyemi.

The 18-year-old Akinyemi stood tall among his colleagues during the ovation held on Saturday when the Senators gave them accolades.

Nigerians soar at Ghana awards (Nation)

Nine Nigerians have emerged winners under various categories at the under 40 awards ceremony at Accra, Ghana.

The ceremony, organised with the support of the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Ghana, initially had 163 nominees and was pruned down to 63 nominees.

This is contained in a statement by Mr Ayokunle Ayoko, Founder, Kaizen Academy Ltd., on Monday in Lagos and winner of the law category.

Ayoko noted that the award programme was organised to celebrate successful Africans under the age of 40. Read more

Taylor Swift to receive honorary degree (MusicNews)

Taylor Swift is to receive an honorary degree from New York University (NYU).

On Monday, NYU president Andrew Hamilton and Board of Trustees chairman William Berkley announced that the 11-time Grammy Award-winner will be bestowed with a Doctor of Fine Arts at one of the upcoming commencement ceremonies.

Swift will address the graduates and guests on behalf of all the degree recipients for the Class of 2022 on 18 May at Yankee Stadium.

“I cannot overstate how thrilled I am to be coming together in person with graduates, parents, faculty, and honorees for NYU’s Commencement. Harry Styles will release new single ‘As It Was’ this Friday (NME)

Less than a week after announcing third solo album ‘Harry’s House’, Harry Styles has confirmed the upcoming release of its first single, ‘As It Was’.

The album, which will follow Styles’ 2019 record ‘Fine Line’ – was announced on March 26, with the singer sharing a trailer in which he walks onstage at an empty theatre, with a yellow house set design being hoisted up behind him.

It followed Styles teasing the project with cryptic social media activity, including setting up and following an Instagram account called You Are Home, and being spotted filming a music video on a giant bed outside Buckingham Palace last month.

Now, Styles has confirmed that ‘As It Was’ will arrive this Friday (April 1), tweeting the title and release date alongside a series of photos that show the singer walking down a hallway, back turned to the camera. Read more

The feature film, based on Peter Pan author J.M. Barrie’s gothic bedtime tale Mary Rose, takes place in the coastal wilds of the Alaskan border. The plot follows Lily (Kwiatkowski), a young woman who follows a mysterious melody onto a remote tidal island. When she crosses back over at the next low tide, she emerges into a world where decades have passed.

Gemma Collins to make stage debut in Chicago

Reality star Gemma Collins is set to make her stage debut in Chicago the Musical.

The TV personality, 41, will star as Mama Morton in the UK and Ireland tour of the international smash-hit production, taking over the role from singer Sheila Ferguson.

Collins, who rose to fame in The Only Way Is Essex (TOWIE), has also appeared on I’m A Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here!, Celebrity Big Brother and Dancing On Ice.

She will bring the razzle dazzle to the tour at the Sunderland Empire from 31 May, with further shows in Cardiff, Blackpool, Sheffield, Norwich and Oxford. Read more

Ezra Miller charged with disorderly conduct and harassment after incident at karaoke bar in Hawaii (People)

Actor Ezra Miller is facing criminal charges for his alleged involvement in two separate incidents that happened at a karaoke bar in Hawaii over the weekend.

In a news release, the Hawaii Police Department confirmed the 29-year-old was arrested early Monday and charged for disorderly conduct and harassment over the incidents.

According to the news release, officers responded to the unnamed bar on Silva Street in Hilo on Sunday at around 11:30 p.m., after reports of disorderly conduct.

Police say the actor got “agitated” by people singing karaoke at the bar and then started to use derogatory language. Read more

It’s almost time to return to the skies in Top Gun: Maverick! The long-awaited follow-up film shared a brand-new trailer on Tuesday, giving fans a look at Tom Cruise’s return to his iconic role as Captain Pete “Maverick” Mitchell — and this time, he’s a teacher. 

But he’s not calling himself that. “Good morning, aviators,” Maverick tells his group of TOPGUN graduates, who are training for a specialized mission. “This is your captain speaking.”

Van Kilmer also returns in the film, as Admiral Tom “Iceman” Kazansky, alongside franchise newcomers Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Glen Powell and Miles Teller. John Legend will receive the Global Impact Award at the Recording Academy Honors event.

The All Of Me singer will be presented with the honour on 2 April.

Woody Johnson, the owner of the New York Jets, has admitted that the failure of his bid to buy Chelsea is “disappointing”.

The heir to the Johnson & Johnson pharmaceutical fortune, Johnson developed an affinity for the club during his time in London as the ambassador to the United Kingdom under Donald Trump’s presidency.

He had submitted an offer reportedly in the region of $2.6 billion (£2 billion) to acquire the club from Roman Abramovich, who has put Chelsea up for sale after the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Belgian goalkeeper Miguel van Damme dies of leukaemia aged 28 (IrishTimes)

Cercle Brugge goalkeeper Miguel van Damme has died aged 28 after suffering from leukaemia, the Belgian club said on Tuesday.

He spent his eight-year professional career at Cercle Brugge but his illness limited him to fewer than 50 appearances for the club.

Van Damme was diagnosed with leukaemia during a routine medical check-up in 2016. He recovered from his first bout of the disease to play five more games over the course of the next four years, before suffering a relapse in January 2020.

He said in September 2020 that treatment would no longer have any effect. Read more

Elina Svitolina is taking a break from tennis due to a back injury and the “unbearable pain” of watching Russia invade her homeland of Ukraine.

Svitolina threatened to boycott a match earlier this month against Russia’s Anastasia Potapova unless tennis authorities ruled that Russian and Belarusian tennis players had to compete as “neutral athletes”.

That rule has since been enforced and Svitolina won two matches at the Monterrey Open before losing in the quarter-finals.

Martyn Ford warns Iranian Hulk he has built a 320lb “beast from scratch” (Mirror)

Martyn Ford has sent a warning to rival Iranian Hulk just over a month out from their boxing match.

Ford and Hulk – whose real name is Sajad Gharibi – will both make their boxing debuts in London on April 30. The pair squared off for the first time in Dubai last month, with Ford pushing Gharibi and sending him flying to the floor during a heated altercation.

During their face-off, the 6’8″ Ford towered over his rival and looked in better shape than his opponent. The Brit, who is commonly labelled the ‘World’s Scariest Man’ revealed he currently weighs 320lb during his preparations for the fight.
