Man arraigned over nude video of 13-year-old girl (DailyTrust)
The police in Lagos Thursday took a 23-year-old man, Ebuka Augustine, before a Yaba chief magistrate court for allegedly uploading a nude video of a 13-year-old girl online. The police said that Augustine, who the police described as a co-tenant with the girl’s parents in the Alaba, Ojo, area of Lagos, lured the teenager into his room, where he allegedly defiled her and recorded her nudity in the process. The police alleged that the defendant posted the video to her school friends and also shared it on social media, while tagging the girl’s mother to watch. “The accused used his phone to record the act. He started by extorting the girl, but later sent the video to her mother,” the police said. Read more
Truck crushes vehicle in Lagos, injures five (Punch)
An articulated truck on Friday reportedly crushed a vehicle around the Ifako-Ojodu area of Lagos State, leaving five occupants injured.
The truck, said to be loaded with an undisclosed item, collided with a Toyota Sienna vehicle on top speed.
Public Relations Officer, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Nosa Okunbor, said the injured persons were given first aid treatment by personnel of the Lagos State Ambulance Service before they were whisked to a nearby hospital.
He, however, said no life was lost in the accident, adding that recovery operation had been done. Read more
Woman dies in Lagos church during childbirth, prophetess arrested (Punch)
A prophetess, Evelyn Owoleke, has been arrested in connection with the death of one Seun Olorunto during childbirth at the Cherubim and Seraphim Church, Bayo Ajao Street, in the Aboru area of Lagos State.
PUNCH Metro gathered that Olorunto was to be delivered of her baby in the church but allegedly bled to death.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Bala Elkana, said in a statement on Sunday that Olorunto was found in a pool of her own blood when detectives visited the church, adding that the corpse had been deposited in a mortuary and the baby taken to hospital.
Elkana stated, “On May 4, 2020, around 7.50pm, one Olaloye Jolayemi of Ologundudu Street, Aboru, reported at the Oke-Odo Police Station that on May 4, 2020, around 10am, one Seun Olorunto, 39, died after she was delivered of a baby boy by one Prophetess Evelyn Owoleke at the Cherubim and Seraphim Church on Bayo Ajao Street, Aboru. Police arrest 16 suspected cult members in Lagos (Guardian)
The Police Command in Lagos have arrested 10 suspected cult members in the state.
The suspects were apprehended by operatives of the Special Strike Force on Social Miscreants at Ogunmuyiwa St, Itire based on credible information about their activities.
Bala Elkana, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, made the disclosure in a statement, on Sunday in Lagos.
According to him, the operatives got an intelligence report on April 8, 2020 at about 2000 hours, that the suspected cultists were operating in the Itire area. Read more
LASG shuts hotel, club for contravening COVID-19 guidelines (Punch)
The Lagos State Government has shut a hotel and a club in the Badagry West Local Council Development Area for alleged contravention of the new guidelines issued by the government to operators of hotels, clubs and other entertainment outfits in the state.
The Special Adviser to the Governor on Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mr Solomon Bonu, in a statement on Sunday, said the affected facilities, Maggi Hotel and Tambari Theatre Art (night club) opened for business in defiance to government’s directives.
“It was also discovered that there was a high level of immorality going on in those places. The night club had become home for strippers, drug barons and all sorts of mischief,” Bonu added.
He expressed displeasure at the unlawful practices by the management of the two facilities, stressing that the guidelines issued by the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture were not followed in spite of advocacy by government. Read more
Teenager disappears from Lagos orphanage (Nation)
The police in Lagos have commenced investigation into the mysterious disappearance of a teenager Daniel Michael from an orphanage home in Ikotun.
Michael, 15, was said to have gone missing on April 30 at the Finger of God Orphanage Home, Governor’s Road, Ikotun.
His sudden disappearance was said to have been noticed around 7am on April 30 but was reported at Ikotun Division on May 4 by one Ernest Madu, after all efforts to look for him failed. Read more
COVID-19: Police arrest 175 suspects for trading, partying in Lagos (Nation)
At least 175 suspects have been arrested by the police in Lagos for alleged violation of the social distancing and curfew directives of government, the command said on Monday.
The suspects who were arrested between Friday and Sunday were alleged to have either organised parties, religious gathering, traded at open markets or breached the dusk-to-dawn curfew put in place to contain further spread of the novel Coronavirus disease, COVID-19.
Parading some of the suspects at the command headquarters, Police Commissioner Hakeem Odumosu said 95 were traders apprehended at Ilepo Market around 10am on Sunday for operating in violation of the lockdown relaxation guidelines. Read more
20-year-old sells newborn for N130,000 (Nation)
A 20-year-old woman arrested by the police for selling her newborn for N130,000 to suspected traffickers Monday said the money she took was for her upkeep and that she gave the child away because it would have died of hunger in her care.
The suspect identified as Miracle Kalu was trailed to Imo State by the police in Lagos after operatives on pin-down patrol on April 26 intercepted a couple with a month-old baby.
Policemen attached to Anthony Division around 2am that day while manning a roadblock at Anthony Oke, intercepted a Toyota Sienna bus carrying seven passengers including one Patrick Mbama, 41, and Ogechi Chinonso Ekwebele, 30, carrying the baby.
While all the occupants were held for violating the ban on inter-state travels, the police team discovered suspicious movements between the couple carrying the baby which prompted further probing.
It was gathered that the suspects upon interrogation, said they were coming from Orlu in Imo State and were in Lagos to deliver the baby to a childless couple. Read more
Air force men lead hoodlums to demolish Lagos buildings (Punch)
Pandemonium broke out in the Aboru area of Iyana-Ipaja in the Alimosho Local Government Area of Lagos State recently as four air force men attached to the OP MESA allegedly led about 17 hoodlums to demolish some buildings at the Valley View Estate.
PUNCH Metro gathered that the air force men, led by Staff Sergeant T. A. Oyewo, and the hoodlums allegedly acted on the instructions of one Mr Yinka Campbell, when they force their way into the estate around 10.30am, destroyed some buildings and took advantage of the situation to loot property worth millions.
While these were going on, the owners of some of the affected buildings informed the Oke-Odo Police Division and policemen, who were detailed to the scene, arrested the air force men and nine of the hoodlums.
The narrative, however, changed when the suspects were taken to the police station, from where they were transferred to the Area ‘P’ Command, but the Commander, Gbenga Adepoju, reportedly released the air force men. Read more
I have no regrets, says lady who drowned own baby inside bucket (Guardian)
A lady who confessed to have drowned her one year and six months old baby inside a bucket of water in her apartment in Gowon Estate area of Lagos State has been arrested by the police. To the chagrin of many, the suspect, Adisa Funmilola, aged 22, did not express regret for her action; rather, she boldly admitted to have killed her baby because “she deprived me of realising my dream of becoming a lawyer.”
During interrogation, she said: “I drowned my baby inside a bucket filled with water on Monday. Thereafter, I reported myself at the Gowon estate police division. The police did not come immediately but when they did, they found the dead baby inside the bucket.
“I was impregnated by a boy who attended the same JAMB lesson with me. But he rejected the pregnancy. I wanted to abort the pregnancy but my father said no. I passed my JAMB and was offered admission to study Law at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, but I had to defer the admission because of the baby. Read more
Policemen beat LASTMA officer to a pulp (Punch)
Pandemonium broke out in the Apapa area of Lagos State on Monday as some policemen reportedly beat a senior officer of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, Roland Fuludu, to a pulp.
It was gathered that the traffic officer was beaten by policemen led by one SP Femi Iwasokun for allegedly interfering with their job.
PUNCH Metro learnt that Fuludu and other enforcement officers were controlling traffic at the Eleganza area of Apapa when six policemen came on the pretext of also controlling traffic.
Our correspondent gathered that the policemen opened a section of the road that was under construction for motorists, who parted with bribes.
Trouble started when Fuludu accosted one of the policemen for turning back a vehicle that passed through the normal route and the encounter degenerated into an argument. Read more
