Oyan Dam to release ‘highest’ water volume October, Lagos warns (Punch)

The Lagos State Government has warned residents, especially those close to the banks of the Ogun River, that more water will be released from Oyan Dam this month (October).

This was contained in a press statement by the Director of Public Affairs, Lagos State Ministry of Environment and Water Resources, Mr Kunle Adeshina, on Sunday.

The statement was titled, “As rainfalls peak, Oyan Dam to release highest volume of water this month”.

The statement quoted the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Mr Tunji Bello, as saying that “23 million cubic meters of water will be released during the month, which is the peak”.

He explained that “the release from the Oyan Dam is the highest is as a result of the intensive rainfalls which will also climax in the current month”. Read more

Lagos police arrests 2 FSARS operatives over extortion, intimidation of citizens (Vanguard)

Two operatives of the FSARS and their civilian accomplice operating in Lagos State, Inspector Sale James, Inspector Monday Uchiola and Okechukwu Ogbonna, have been arrested by the Lagos State Police Command, for acts of professional misconduct including extortion and intimidation of innocent citizens.

The operational vehicle of the men has also been impounded and disciplinary procedure has already commenced against the defaulters, according to police source.

Meanwhile, the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Mohammed Adamu has banned the personnel of the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad (FSARS) and other Tactical Squads of the Force including the Special Tactical Squad (STS), Intelligence Response Team (IRT), Anti-Cultism Squad and other Tactical Squads operating at the Federal, Zonal and Command levels from carrying out routine patrols. Sanwo-Olu speaks on ‘unlawful exploitation’ by SARS (Guardian)

Lagos State governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu-Olu Sunday said the state will “speedily” take “appropriate actions” to address increasing police brutality in the state.

A viral video on social media on Saturday showed members of the notorious Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) of the Nigerian police forcing a young man into a car.

The car drove off after the man was forced to sit at the back of the car by the policemen who wore mufti.

A Twitter user,  @yourmydad, who claimed to be the victim of the harassment, said the incident happened on 25th September when he and his friend were going to Yaba to pick up some items.

“When our Uber got stopped by men without uniforms who claimed to be sars officer, I refused to open the doors because they had no ID,” he said in a Twitter thread on Saturday. Read more

Atiku, Saraki condemn SARS atrocities (Thisday)

Abubakar and a former President of the Senate, Dr. Bukola Saraki yesterday condemned the actions of members of the Special Anti Robbery Square (SARS).

They expressed concern about the atrocities of SARS officers in separate statements yesterday, calling for a reform of the unit of the police to get rid of corrupt officials.

In his statement, Abubakar lamented that the arm of the Nigeria Police “has turned out to become an instrument of oppression to the people meant to protect.”

Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in the 2019 general election, explained that the SARS was set up to confront violent crimes such as armed robbery, kidnapping and other related crimes. Read more

Chelsea’s French international midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko arrived in Rome on Sunday for a medical ahead of a loan move to Napoli, according to multiple media reports in Italy.

The 26-year-old spent last season on loan at Ligue 1 side Monaco, having played for AC Milan during the 2018-2019 season, then coached by Napoli boss Gennaro Gattuso.

Bakayoko, who joined Chelsea in 2017 after three seasons with Monaco, will undergo medical tests in the Italian capital before a one-season loan move. Read more

Police give reasons robbers raided ekiti bank unchallenged (Thisday)

The Ekiti Police Command yesterday explained that the robbers that invaded a branch of Wema Bank in Iyin Ekiti on Friday were able to break into the bank because they outnumbered the police officers on guard.

The Commissioner of Police, Mr Babatunde Mobayo made the disclosure in a statement saying the robbers numbering 10 overpowered his police officers stationed at the branch during the operation.

The robber besieged the bank around 3.50 p.m., raided the bank for over half an hour and carted away an undisclosed amount of money during the operation. Read more

FoI: Kebbi deputy governor declares asset worth N353,136,378 (Vanguard)

The Deputy Governor of Kebbi State, Mr Yombe Samaila, has declared his assets landed property and cash in banks, valued at N353,136,378.56 among others.

Consequent upon the declaration, the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, SERAP, has urged President Muhammadu Buhari and his Vice, Professor Yemi Osinbajo to follow the good example of Samaila, by immediately publishing their asset declaration forms.

Samaila while responding to SERAP’s suit had last week forwarded his asset declaration form to the organization. The form dated May 28, 2019, and sworn to before the High Court of Justice, Bikebbi, Kebbi State, shows that the deputy governor declared assets, including landed property and cash in banks, valued at N353,136,378.56, from which he stated that he receives N61,500,000.00 yearly as income. Lawyer named first black woman to lead national party in Canada (Punch)

Toronto lawyer Annamie Paul was Saturday named head of the Green Party, becoming the first Black woman to lead a national political party in Canada.

The 47-year-old mother of two, the daughter of immigrants from the Caribbean, described herself as a “descendant of slaves.”

Paul hailed her victory as a “historic moment” during her speech after the announcement of the results of the internal ballot in Ottawa.

“We have done something that has never been done before in Canadian politics,” said the Jewish lawyer, who has reported being the victim of anti-Semitic attacks on social media.

“Colonialism has robbed me of my original identity,” Paul added in her speech, saying she was ready to support indigenous peoples in particular in their fight against systemic racism within the police. Read more

Cineworld to shut down UK screens after Bond film delay (BBC)

Global cinema giant Cineworld is set to temporarily close its UK sites in the coming weeks, it has been reported.

The Sunday Times says the firm is writing to Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden to say the industry is now “unviable”.

The firm says it has been hit by delays in the release of big-budget films, putting 5,500 jobs at risk.

The premiere of the 007 film No Time To Die has been postponed twice and is now due for release in April 2021. Read more

Nagorno-Karabakh conflict: Major cities hit as heavy fighting continues. (BBC)

Azerbaijan’s second-largest city, Ganja, has been shelled by Armenian forces, as heavy clashes continue over the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region.

The enclave is officially part of Azerbaijan but run by ethnic Armenians.

The self-proclaimed authorities there say they hit Ganja’s military airport after Azerbaijani forces shelled the region’s capital, Stepanakert.

Azerbaijan says no Ganja military sites were hit. More than 220 people have died since clashes began a week ago. Read more

President Donald Trump went through a “very concerning” period Friday and faces a “critical” next two days in his fight against COVID-19 at a military hospital, his chief of staff said Saturday — in contrast to a rosier assessment moments earlier by Trump doctors, who took pains not to reveal the president had received supplemental oxygen at the White House before his hospital admission.

Trump offered his own assessment Saturday evening in a video from Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, saying he was beginning to feel better and hoped to “be back soon.”

Nigerian midfielder, Anthony Uzodimma weekend won the man of the match award after scoring the winning goal for Giresunspor in a 2-1 injury time win over Boluspur in a Turkish 1st Lig game.

The highly talented 21 years old midfielder, who was playing his first match for his team, scored a spectacular header goal on 95 minutes, that earned his team all three points.

Uzodimma, who is on loan to Giresunspor from Kayserispor,. surprisingly came from the bench to net a goal that turned out to be the match winner.

The goal sent his teammates into wild jubilation as they had resigned themselves to settling for a share of the points with their opponents until the magical strike by Uzodimma turned things around to the delight of the entire team. Read more

Napoli striker Victor Osimhen has been ruled out of the Super Eagles’ friendly games against Algeria and Tunisia on October 9 and 13 respectively, in Austria following COVID-19 restrictions put in place by his Italian club.

World record holder Eliud Kipchoge was beaten in the London Marathon as Shura Kitata won a thrilling sprint finish to claim an unexpected victory.

Four-time winner Kipchoge was the favourite, but fell behind with two laps to go and finished eighth.

Kitata pushed ahead of Kenya’s Vincent Kipchumba on the home straight to finish in two hours five minutes and 41 seconds.

Brigid Kosgei, who holds the women’s world record, defended her title.

Kosgei, 26, went clear of world champion Ruth Chepngetich after mile 18 and finished in 2:18.58, three minutes and three seconds ahead of American Sara Hall. Read more

Juventus players in isolation after 2 staff test positive for COVID-19 (Vanguard)

Italian champions Juventus announced on Saturday that their entire squad have gone into isolation after two staff members tested positive for COVID-19.

Juventus, who are scheduled to host Napoli on Sunday, confirmed those returning positive tests were “neither players nor members of the technical or medical staff”.

“This procedure will allow all members who tested negative to the controls to carry out regular training and match activities, but will not be allowed contact with outside the group,” the club said in a statement. Read more
