Truck drivers have taken to the streets in Apapa, protesting the killing of one of their own by a suspected member of the Presidential Taskforce. Two other yet to be identified persons also sustained severe wounds in the fracas which occurred at Lylipond gate, Ijora.

Vehicles, including two police vans, were also destroyed during the crisis as truck drivers and members of the presidential task force team engaged in a fight. Read more

The Lagos State Government on Thursday dislodged traders transacting businesses on road setbacks and walkways and arrested 10 motorists in Oyingbo area of Lagos State, for obstructing traffic flow.

Officials of the State’s Ministry of Transportation, led by the Commissioner, Dr. Frederic Oladeinde, stormed Oyingbo to enforce compliance of the ultimatum issued to traders and motorists, in the area to abate the nuisance.

Several traders transacting businesses on road setbacks, and walkways were sent packing, while some motorists obstructing traffic were arrested. Read more

School Supervisor, 47, bags 60 years for defiling 2-year-old pupil (NewTelegraph)

An Ikeja Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court, Lagos on Thursday sentenced a 47- year-old school Supervisor, Mr Adegboyega Adenekan to 60 years in prison for defiling a two-year old and 11-month-old pupil of a school in Lagos.

Justice Sybil Nwaka convicted Adenekan on a one count charge of defilement of a child sometime in November 2016 at Chrisland School, Victoria Garden City (VGC), Lagos.

The convict was accused of having unlawful sexual intercourse with the two-year-old pupil. Read more

Court remands man for allegedly kidnapping, raping 2 teenagers (DailyTrust)

A Kaduna Chief Magistrates’ Court on Thursday ordered that a 27-year-old man Yusuf Yahaya, who allegedly kidnapped and raped two teenagers, be remanded in a correctional facility pending legal advice. Magistrate Lukman Sidi, did not take the plea of Yahaya, on grounds that the court lacked jurisdiction to hear the matter. Sidi, ordered the police to forward the case file to the Department of Public Prosecution(DPP) for advice. Read more

Oyo Assembly passes anti-open grazing law (Nation)

Oyo House of Assembly has passed the anti-open grazing bill into law, says it will foster peace and promote agricultural business in the state.

The bill, which was passed at its Thursday plenary, is to avoid continuous damages and end lost of lives and unquantifiable investment to constant clashes between herders and crop farmers.

Speaker Adebo Ogundoyin appealed to residents to ignore falsehoods and misconceptions of the prohibition of Open Rearing and Grazing of Livestock bill that are capable of triggering hostility between the herders and local farmers’ communities. Read more

The Chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu said the commission will save N300 million for scheduling to hold governorship and senatorial elections in Kogi consecutively. The Chairman stated this on Thursday during the 2020 Budget defence before a Joint senate and House of Assembly committee on INEC.

Federal Government’s latest border policy, which altered the flow of commodities- legally and illegally, particularly through the Benin Republic, has in the immediate, changed some economic fundamentals.

The government had in August, ordered partial closure of land borders to curtail smuggling of rice and other products into the country, citing non-compliance of neighbouring countries with ECOWAS protocols on the transit of goods.

The move would create an opportunity for local producers of commodities such as rice, vegetable oil, palm oil and other agricultural produce to increase production and meet local demand. Read more

The Nigerian Correctional Service, NCoS says it has constituted an investigative panel to probe the allegations of criminal activities in its Ikoyi custodial centre. The Public Relations Officer of the service, Controller of Corrections, Francis Enobore revealed this while speaking with Daily Trust on Thursday.

He said two Assistant Controller General of Corrections, CVU Chiabua Fsi (zonal coordinator for zone A) and M.A Tukur Fsi as well as the Controller of Corrections in charge of the state, Noel Ailewon, have been directed to carry out the investigations. Read more

Brexit: Boris Johnson to try for 12 December election (BBC)

Boris Johnson has said he will give MPs more time to debate his Brexit deal, but only if they agree to a 12 December general election.

The prime minister told the BBC he expected the EU to grant an extension to his 31 October deadline, even though he “really” did not want one.

He urged Labour to back an election in a vote he plans to hold next week.

EU leaders are expected to give their verdict on delaying Brexit for up to three months, on Friday. Read more

A secretary defrauded British Airways staff clubs out of £1,000,000 after using fake qualifications to become a financial director.

Carole Farr, 52, used her company credit card to spend £500,000 on luxury flights, hotels and big supermarket shops between 2012 and 2017.

She then also gave away a further £500,000 to a Nigerian boyfriend she met online – who failed to repay her.

Originally she had joined BA Clubs in 2012 as a secretary, before using fake accountancy qualifications to become Chief Executive Financial Director after 2014. Read more

California: Power cuts expected as Kincade wildfires rage (BBC)

More than half a million people are facing power cuts in California as wildfires rage through the state.

The Kincade fire has engulfed 10,000 acres of land and has not been contained, says the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.

It is being driven by strong north winds and is moving south, a California Fire spokeswoman said.

The worst of the winds are expected to arrive on Thursday afternoon. Read more

China to host expanded Club World Cup in 2021 – FIFA (DailyTrust)

China will host the first edition of the new, expanded 24-team Club World Cup in 2021, FIFA President Gianni Infantino told reporters on Thursday following a meeting of the global soccer body’s decision-making council in Shanghai. Infantino said the competition would take place in June-July of that year and that the format, slot allocation and criteria for selecting the teams would be decided in the next few weeks.

Infantino did not give an exact breakdown of slots but said there would be eight teams from Europe. Read more

McGregor says will return to fighting next year (Guardian)

Mixed martial arts star Conor McGregor on Thursday announced he would return to fighting in January, despite announcing his retirement in March.

“I would like to announce to the public the return of the Notorious Conor McGregor will take place on January 18th in the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada,” he said at an event in Moscow to promote his whiskey brand.

“I am in prime physical condition, I’ve agreed the date with the company,” he said, without specifying the name of his opponent.

Juventus seek 300m euros boost to keep up with European rivals (Guardian)

Juventus president Andrea Agnelli on Thursday asked the club’s shareholders to approve a 300 million euro ($333 million) capital increase to help expand the Italian club’s global ambitions.

Despite losses of 39.9 million euros ($44m) last season, Agnelli asked shareholders for major investment as part of a five-year plan to keep pace with European rivals such as Real Madrid, Barcelona and Manchester United.

“Today, we ask you, the Shareholders to approve a 300 million capital increase for our 2019/2024 development plan,” Agnelli said at the club’s Allianz Stadium in Turin. Read more

Inter Milan are interested in signing former Germany star Thomas Mueller, who has lost his starting place at Bayern Munich, magazine Kicker reported on Thursday.

Nigeria’s Super Eagles have dropped by one spot in the FIFA World ranking for the month of October to now place as world 35th country. In the ranking table from the world football governing body, FIFA on Thursday, Nigeria garnered 1,481 points as against 1482 recorded in September.
