‘Passengers’ pretend to pay Lagos Uber driver, snatch car at gunpoint (Punch)

An operator of a ridesharing service, otherwise known as Uber, is counting his losses after a three-man robbery gang snatched his car at gunpoint while pretending to pay him transport fare around an Automated Teller Machine point in the Obalende area of Lagos State. The driver, who gave his name only as Seun for security reasons, was waiting for the passengers to withdraw money from the ATM when one of them suddenly brought out a gun. Read more

The Ambassador of Nigeria in Doha, Qatar, Ambassador Abdullahi Bawa Wase, is dead. The envoy died on Friday after a protracted illness. Wase, a non-career diplomat from Plateau State, was appointed by President Muhammadu Buhari in July 2016. Egypt court orders arrest of Mubarak’s sons (Punch)

An Egyptian court on Saturday ordered the arrest of the two sons of former President Hosni Mubarak on charges of stock market manipulation, state media reported. The Cairo Criminal Court accuses Alaa and Gamal Mubarak of being involved in making unlawful profits of about 500 million pounds (about 28 million dollars) from manipulating stock market shares. Typhoon Mangkhut: 14 killed as storm batters Philippines (BBC)

Some 14 people have been killed in a massive storm which brought destruction to the northern Philippines, a presidential adviser says. Typhoon Mangkhut ripped through the Philippines’ main island of Luzon, and is now moving west towards China. The storm tore off roofs, felled trees, triggered 42 landslides and caused extensive flooding. Mangkhut unleashed winds of 185km/h (115mph) as it careered from east to west across the north of Luzon. ‘Mariachi musician’ gunmen kill three in Mexico City (BBC)

Gunmen dressed as traditional mariachi musicians have killed at least three people and wounded at least seven in Mexico City. The armed men opened fire at a road crossing on the edge of the Plaza Garibaldi, a major tourist attraction packed with mariachi bars, police said. The gunmen then fled from the scene on motorbikes. Plaza Garibaldi borders the notorious Tepito district, home to the violent La Union drugs gang. Read more
