Tinubu, Atiku, Obi: 121 Yoruba groups open-up on ‘Lagos Declaration’ (Vanguard)

Ahead of the next general elections, 121 Yoruba groups, last week, converged in Lagos under what they called ‘the 2023 Declaration’ to decide on which presidential candidate to support.

There are three front runners in the election viz: Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Mr. Peter Obi of Labour Party (LP).

Afenifere, the influential group from the South-West where Tinubu hails from, is supporting Obi from the South-East on the grounds that South-West has produced the President before and currently has someone from the zone occupying the Vice President’s office whereas the South-East has never been President since 1999 when Nigeria began the fourth republic.

The 121 Yoruba groups adopted Tinubu as their candidate for the 2023 presidential election notwithstanding their reservations about his party, the APC.

The groups, operating under Alliance of Yoruba Democratic Movement, AYDM, also declared the said election as another ‘Kiriji War’, saying it has appointed no fewer than 150, 000 people as campaign volunteers in the South-West region. Read more

Back to the Future stars Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd reunite at Comic Con (ET)

Marty McFly and Doc Brown are back in action! Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd reunited at New York Comic Con Sunday, for an official Back to the Future reunion, where they reminisced over their iconic roles in the beloved film trilogy.

The panel kicked off with the actors recalling how Fox was called in to replace Eric Stoltz, who was originally cast as Marty McFly, a little over a month after filming had begun. Lloyd said he remembered the announcement as it came after a series of night shoots dedicated to the moment Doc Brown finally cracks the code to time travel.

“The announcement — at one o’clock in the morning after we were shooting for six weeks — was that the actor playing Marty would no longer be playing Marty, and that tomorrow, we would start shooting with Michael,” Lloyd, 83 recalled. “I felt that I barely made it through the [first] six weeks and now I was gonna have to do it again?!”

Fox, 61, who was filming Family Ties at the time, was apprehensive to sign on, noting that his mother was worried that he’d be too exhausted trying to spread himself between the TV show and filming a feature film, but ultimately, Fox decided to hop on board of what would become a career-defining film for both him and Lloyd.

Busan: Korean content veterans discuss their industry’s stunning global growth (THR)

With Korean films and dramas continuing to find mass success among the American mainstream — Squid Game, Parasite and Extracurricular to name just a few — veterans of the Seoul entertainment world gathered at the Busan International Film Festival on Sunday to discuss how their industry achieved such milestones, as well as strategies for even further future development.

Hosted by Busan’s Asia Contents and Film Market, industry experts debated the ongoing global trajectory of Korean entertainment at a panel session titled, “The Definition and Destination of K-Story.”  The talk was moderated by Jaewon Choi, CEO of Anthology Studio, with participants including Keo Lee, Netflix Korea’s director of content, screenwriter Chung Seo-kyung and Hyejung Hwang, chief content officer at TVing, CJ Group’s growing streaming service.

“Korean content was well prepared [for this moment],” said Lee of Netflix. “I don’t believe that Korean content was globalized thanks to Netflix alone. Well before Netflix, Korean content was already global. Korean music and movies have attracted worldwide attention. But enhanced accessibility via Netflix helped us to globalize further.”

Screenwriter Chung, who co-wrote the screenplay for Park Chan-wook’s latest film Decision to Leave and the hit drama series Little Women, said the strength of Korean drama and film lies in its complex handling of real-life social issues at home. Read more

Cristiano Ronaldo scored the 700th club goal of his career to earn Manchester United a 2-1 victory at Everton that moved his team a point off the Premier League’s top four on Sunday.

The 37-year-old Ronaldo was only on the field due to Anthony Martial’s inability to run off an injury sustained in the warmup, but it was no great surprise the substitute seized his opportunity.

Ronaldo had been previously limited to just 207 minutes in the league by United’s recently hired manager, Erik ten Hag, who cannot find a place for him in a system which is based on mobility and pressing.

But, while the Portugal international may not be ideally suited to those requirements, he can still show a turn of pace and an unerring eye for goal when he has to and that is exactly how he brought up his landmark shortly before halftime. Read more
