A 52-year-old pastor, Samson Ajayi, and one Jamiyu Jejelaye (36) have been arraigned before an Ado-Ekiti magistrate’s court over gender-based violence on one Nifemi Ajayi.

Police prosecutor, Inspector Bamikole Olasunkanmi, told the court Monday that the pastor sometime in March, 2021, at his church, Erigorah Gospel Church, Anaye, Ikere-Ekiti, caused Nifemi Ajayi, who claimed to be a virgin, to carry pure water in her hand and distribute to every member of the church which conduct was to be detrimental to Nifemi’s physical and psychological well-being.

Counsels to the defendants, Barrister O. J. Abiola for first the defendant, and Barrister Iyanu Obamuwagun for the second defendant, urged the court to grant bail to their clients, saying they would not jump bail.

The Magistrate, Abdulhamid Lawal, granted them bail of N100,000 each, with two sureties in like sum and adjourned to September 15, 2021. Read more

Court remands 2 applicants for being in possession of toy gun (Vanguard)

An Ikeja Magistrates’ Court on Monday ordered that two unemployed men be remanded in a correctional centre for allegedly being in possession of a  toy gun.

The police charged Toheed Tajudeen, 25 and Segun Jayeola, 27, whose residential addresses were not given, with conspiracy and unlawful possession of firearms.

Magistrate Elizabeth Adeola, who did not take the plea of Tajudeen and Jayeola ordered that they should be kept at the Kirikiri Correctional Centre, Lagos.

Adeola directed that the case file should be sent to the state Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for legal advice. Read more

Police arrest 16 workers over alleged invasion of firm (Leadership)

Police in Lagos have arrested five union leaders and 11 workers of Mouka Foam who allegedly invaded the company.

The suspects were identified as Johnson Adeyemi, chairman, Mouka Foam branch of the National Union of Chemical, Footwear, Rubber, Leather and Non-Metallic Employees (NUCFRLANMPE), Segun Balogun, (financial secretary), Matthew Olagoke (branch auditor), Timothy Datsaba, (ex-officio) and another ex-officio simply identified as Hilary, among others  workers.

Our correspondent gathered that the suspects were arrested by officers of the Lagos State police command attached to Area F, Ogba, Lagos State.

It was further learnt that the incident occurred when some union members of Mouka Foam company staged a protest against the company claiming that the company’s policy are working against the union and posting them out of the state in order to kill the association. Read more

Apapa traffic: Truck owners protest extortion by police, LASTMA (Vanguard)

Truck owners under the aegis of Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), and Nigeria Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO), yesterday, protested the continued extortion by the Police and officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA, just as they called for a reduction on money collection checkpoints before the port.

To drive their point home, both associations blocked the Apapa-Oshodi expressway, causing traffic gridlock on the road.

They also chanted songs and displayed placards with inscriptions such as ‘Extortion must stop’, ‘Don’t give, don’t take’, ‘Enough is enough’, ‘Extortion is corruption’, ‘Stop extortion of truckers’, ‘Extortion is killing our economy’, among others. Read more

Flood kills pregnant woman, 5 others in Yobe (Leadership)

Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) has confirmed six persons killed including a pregnant woman and over 100 houses destroyed due to flooding in Potiskum local government area of the state.

The executive secretary of the agency, Dr Muhammed Goje, confirmed the incident in an interview with LEADERSHIP yesterday in Yobe.

“We deployed assessment teams to the affected areas. We also visited Potiskum to sympathise with the victims over the disaster,” he said. Read more

Bandits kill one, abduct 4 in Katsina (Vanguard)

Gunmen suspected to be bandits in the wee hours of Friday morning killed one Abdu Buzu (Warwas) and abducted four other persons in Dangani village, Musawa Local government area of Katsina State.

It was gathered that among the four persons abducted were three children of a lecturer, Malam Sule Dan-hudu with the Isa Kaita College of Education in Katsina.

A source in the area said the bandits stormed the village around 1:40am, killed Abdu Buzu and kidnapped others.

He identified the kidnap victims as Abdurrahaman, Ahmed and Amina (all children of the lecturer as well as Ibrahim Ma’aruf (Dan-ula).

However, as at the time of filing in this report, the Katsina State Police Command is yet to issue any official statement to that effect. Read more

Ibrahim Mantu, a former deputy Senate president, is dead.

A family source, who confirmed the demise to our correspondent, said he died at a private hospital in Abuja after nine days of sickness and isolation.

He said the former deputy Senate president died at about 2 am on Tuesday.

“He fell ill about nine days ago and was receiving treatment at home but he was rushed to the hospital when there was no sign of improvement,” the source said, adding that the funeral prayer would hold later on Tuesday, in Abuja.

FG receives 699,760 doses of AstraZeneca (Nation)

The United Kingdom on Tuesday donated 699,760 doses of AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccines to the Federal Government.

This is the first tranche of the 1,299,760 expected from the UK Government through the COVAX facility.

Nigeria on Tuesday flagged off the second phase of COVID-19 vaccination with 4 million doses of Moderna vaccine received from the US Government.

Speaking during the official handing over of the vaccines to the Federal Government by the UK Government in Abuja, the Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) Dr Faisal Shuaib, said: “I am glad to inform you that last night, we received 699,760 doses of AstraZeneca vaccine donated by the UK Government. Cambridgeshire sinkhole: Locals crack up at The Butts’ hole (BBC)

News of a sinkhole which appeared in a road called The Butts has caused amusement among a town’s residents on social media.

The hole and crack in Soham were reported to Cambridgeshire Police on Sunday.

A plethora of puns followed a police post on Facebook, with one person saying: “That can’t be worded in a way that isn’t amusing”.

New woman steps forward alleging Jeffrey Epstein raped her (NYPost)

Another woman has come forward with new claims that she was raped by Jeffrey Epstein at his Manhattan townhouse when she was 17, a lawsuit shows.

The woman filed her suit anonymously in Manhattan Supreme Court late Friday — the eve of the historic closure of the New York Child Victim’s Act’s look-back window.

The window allowed people alleging childhood abuse to file suit against their suspected attackers and the institutions that reportedly protected the perpetrators, regardless of whether the old claims were beyond the statute of limitations.

The new Epstein case alleges that in 2003, when the woman was 17, the sick financier “sexually assaulted, abused, battered and raped her on at least two, separate occasions at his home” in Manhattan. Read more

Taliban takeover: Uganda to take in 2,000 Afghan refugees (BBC) 

Uganda is to take in 2,000 refugees who have fled Afghanistan after Taliban militants took power on Sunday.

The first group of 500 Afghans are expected to arrive at Entebbe Airport later on Tuesday.

The deal was agreed following a request from the US government, Refugee Minister Esther Anyakun told the BBC.

Uganda has a long history of welcoming refugees – and is currently home to around 1.3 million people who have fled conflict or other disasters. Read more
