Pastor accuses Lagos hospital of negligence after wife’s death during childbirth (Punch)
A Lagos-based pastor, Ayobami Taiwo, has accused health workers at the Epe General Hospital of negligence, following the death of his wife, Oluremi Esan, during childbirth.
The 40-year-old Taiwo lamented that the doctor and nurses on duty abandoned his wife after she was referred on emergency to the hospital by the Epe Primary Health Centre.
He explained that it was discovered during a scan on April 13, 2020, that Oluremi had placenta previa and a Caesarean Section needed to be performed to save her life and that of the baby.
The pastor told PUNCH Metro that when he refused to buy a delivery kit that was claimed would be needed for the operation from the nurses, his wife was left unattended to by the doctor and the nurses.Read more
Seven die, six injured in Lagos accidents (Guardian)
No fewer than seven persons were confirmed dead with several others injured yesterday in separate accidents that occurred in three locations in Lagos State. The deceased, four of whom are members of two families, died on the spots.
The first accident that claimed four lives happened when a car rammed into some commuters standing at a bus stop at Ogudu, inward Third Mainland Bridge, another one was recorded at Sangotedo, Ajah, while the third accident involved a Mazda bus and a motorcycle, which claimed two lives around new Kara market, on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway. Lagos, Ogun, FCT get 279 trucks of grains (Nation)
The Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Lagos and Ogun states have received 279 trucks of grains, Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development Sadiya Farouq has said.
President Muhammadu Buhari had approved the release of 70,000 metric tonnes of grains for distribution to the poor and vulnerable to cushion the impact of the lockdown order in affected states.
The minister spoke at the briefing of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 in Abuja yesterday.
She said she was yet to get the 70,000 metric tonnes approved by President because of the storage challenge.
Mrs. Farouq said: “70,000 grains were approved by Mr. President that it should be given to the PTF through the ministry and to be distributed to the three affected lockdown states by the federal government and then to other frontline states. Read more
Foundation, Salvation Army provide succour to vulnerable Lagos residents (Guardian)
The First Child and Prisoner Care Foundation (FCAPCF), founded by Ambassador Martins Efe, has partnered with comedian Igodye’s Francis Agoda Path of Honour (FAPOH) to donate palliatives to some orphanage homes to cushion the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic.
FCAPCF was created with the aim of sustaining the living standards of the less-privileged in society, by catering to prisoners, handicap persons, orphans, widows and vulnerable children.
It would be recalled that the founder, Ambassador Efe in 2018 empowered over 50 youths in the country with over N20 million cash to start up their entrepreneurial dreams, which has today provided employment opportunities to many today. Read more
Nigeria confirms 117 new COVID-19 cases, total now 782 (DailyTrust)
Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) Nigeria has confirmed 117 new cases of the coronavirus infections, taking the total of confirmed cases in the most populous black nation to 782.
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, noted that the cases were confirmed in Lagos, FCT (Abuja), Kano, Borno, Katsina, Ogun, Rivers and Bauchi. 59 cases were confirmed in Lagos, 29 in FCT, 14 in Kano, 6 in Borno, 4 in Katsina and 3 in Ogun while Rivers and Bauchi recorded one each. 197 patients have been treated and discharged while 25 deaths have been recorded as a result of the virus. Court convicts two pastors for holding service in Ekiti (Guardian)
Two men, Pastor Daramola Abiodun and Sunday Akinwade, were yesterday arraigned in an Ado-Ekiti Magistrates’ Court for allegedly conducting a religious gathering of more than 30 persons on Sunday, contrary to the stay-at-home order by the state government.
The state prosecutor, Mr. Femi Onipede, told the court that the two pastors committed the offence on April 19 at about 10:00a.m. at Source of Salvation Ministries, Omisanjana in Ado-Ekiti in Ado-Ekiti Magisterial District without lawful excuse.
Onipede said that the pastors were arraigned on a two-count charge of conducting a religious gathering of more than 30 person and violating a lawful order contrary to and punishable under Section 203 of the Criminal Code Law., Cap C16, Laws of Ekiti State, 2012. Read more
Another extension likely as WHO warns against lifting of lockdown (Leadership)
There are indications that President Muhammadu Buhari may again extend the lockdown in Abuja as well as Lagos and Ogun States as the World Health Organisation (WHO) yesterday warned countries to apply caution in lifting COVID-19 lockdowns.
Specifically, the global health body warned of a resurgence of infections if the current restriction measures put in place to flatten the curve on the pandemic were relaxed too soon.
President Muhammadu Buhari had on March 29 ordered a total lockdown in Lagos and Ogun States as well as the FCT in a bid to halt the spread of the virus. Read more

The Federal Government has said that candidates sitting for this year’s West Africa Examination Council (WAEC) and National Examination Council (NECO) examinations would know when they would write the papers after the COVID-19 lockdown in the country. The Minister of State for Education, Mr. Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba, said this on Tuesday in Abuja, at the 16th joint national briefing of the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19. According to him, WAEC and NECO examinations had been postponed indefinitely as a result of the COVID-19, adding that the ministry will announce the time for the examination after the lockdown period. Kwankwaso donates beds to Kano State Govt (Leadership)
The former Governor of Kano state, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has donated 60 bed hospital as isolation centre for the coronavirus.
Kwankwaso in a statement by his media aide, Mr Saifullahi Hassan, said the hospital named AMANA HOSPITAL is newly built, fully equipped with 60-beds capacity.
According to him, the Hospital has been completed last Month and it has not yet been commissioned. Read more

3-week-old girl becomes one of Britain’s youngest to recover from coronavirus (DailyMail)
A three-week-old girl who was believed to be Scotland’s youngest coronavirus patient has recovered from the virus to the delight of her parents and the medical team who cared for her.
Peyton Maguire was born eight weeks premature on March 26 and was delivered by C-section at University Hospital Wishaw after mother Tracy was diagnosed with pre-eclampsia.
After being cared for in an incubator in the neonatal unit, the 3lb 11oz baby tested positive for Covid-19 on April 15 – despite not having any symptoms.
On Monday, after two negative tests, Peyton has now been allowed to leave the hospital with her parents. Read more
Death toll of Canada’s worst shooting rises to 23 (BBC)
The toll from the worst mass shooting in Canada’s modern history, a 14-hour rampage over the weekend, has risen to 23 from 19, police say.
The victims include a 17-year-old not identified by officials who previously believed all those killed in the province of Nova Scotia were adults.
Authorities are yet to determine a motive for the crime. Police say the gunman knew some of the victims.
The shooter, a 51-year-old man, was killed in a confrontation with police. Read more
UK rapper Abdel-Majed Abdel Bary arrested on suspicion of fighting for Islamic State (SkyNews)
A former London rapper has been arrested on suspicion of joining Islamic State fighters in Syria.
Abdel-Majed Abdel Bary was arrested on Monday in southern Spain, according to The Associated Press, which cited two sources close to the investigation.
Bary was initially suspected of being “Jihadi John”, the Islamic State member who appeared in a video of the murder of American journalist James Foley. Read more

Ryanair customers have been left outraged after they were told they will have to wait until the coronavirus crisis is over to receive a refund.
Some passengers with cancelled flights have received an email which said if they do not wish to accept a voucher for future travel they will be placed in a queue to get a refund after the pandemic. The email said: ‘You can request a cash refund however bear in mind we will place your request in the cash refund queue until the Covid-19 emergency has passed. Read more

An anti-lockdown protester who railed against Covid-19 closures in his home state has died of coronavirus aged 60. John McDaniel, of Marion County in Ohio, died at a hospital in Columbus last Wednesday, around a fortnight after he tested positive for Covid-19.
On March 15, he railed against Ohio Governor Mike DeWine’s closures aimed at stopping the spread of coronavirus on social media, writing on Facebook: ‘If what I’m hearing is true, that DeWine has ordered all bars and restaurants to be closed, I say bullshit! ‘He doesn’t have that authority. Netflix sign-ups jump during coronavirus lockdowns (BBC)
Netflix has seen subscriber numbers surge this year, as lockdowns around the world keep people at home where they want to be entertained.
Almost 16 million people created accounts in the first three months of the year, the firm said.
That is almost double the new sign-ups it saw in the final months of 2019.
However, the streaming service, which is behind some multi-million dollar productions, said shutdowns have halted “almost all” filming around the world.
And sharp declines in the value of many currencies has meant new subscribers outside of the US, where Netflix is based, are not worth as much to the company as they would have been before the crisis. And that has hurt its international revenue growth. Read more
COVID-19: NFF, players send messages to Nigerians (Punch)
The Nigeria Football Federation, Super Eagles’ coach Gernot Rohr and some national team players have jointly sent a message to Nigerians urging them to obey the directives given by the World Health Organisation, Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and the Federal Government on the coronavirus.
In a video posted on the NFF Twitter handle, Nigerians were told that in order to defeat the coronavirus, all hands must be on deck.

The head of the Qatar-based TV giant, CEO Yousef al-Obaidly, has written to chairpersons of all top-flight clubs about the deal, which could see the Magpies bought by a Saudi-backed consortium.

La Liga clubs pledge €200m to other sports, lower leagues (DailyTrust) Clubs in Spain’s top two divisions have agreed to give an additional 200 million euros (176.4 million pounds) over the next four years to boost Spanish sports. The fund would also assist lower league football, the league’s organising body, La Liga, said in a statement on Tuesday. Since signing a collective broadcasting rights deal in 2015, La Liga had donated 1 per cent of its revenue to Spain’s sports ministry. It has increased this to 2.5 per cent as part of a new agreement, while it has doubled its contribution to the national soccer federation (RFEF) from 1 per cent to 2 per cent. Read more
Serie A clubs vote unanimously to continue season (Guardian)
All 20 Serie A clubs on Tuesday voted unanimously to complete the Italian league season, which has been suspended for the past six weeks amid the coronavirus pandemic.
“The Assembly of the Serie A League met this morning and confirmed, with the unanimous vote of all twenty associated clubs in video conference, the intention to complete the 2019-2020 sports season,” Italy’s top flight said in a statement.
It added that any resumption would “take place if the government authorises it and in full compliance with the rules for the protection of health and safety”. Read more
