Police operatives from the Ejigbo Division in Lagos have arrested a cleric, Pastor Anthony Israel of the Jesus Disciples Assembly Church, for allegedly killing the son of his landlady,  AbdulRahman Olugbade, 17 and secretly burying him inside an uncompleted room.

P.M.EXPRESS reports that the incident happened on Monday 2nd September, 2024, at Jesus Assembly Street, Omoguwa area of Ejigbo, where he was given an apartment for free by the mother of the deceased,  Mrs. Temitope Olugbade.

What would have led Israel to have murdered the victim, who just passed all his subjects in WAEC exam and was waiting to write JAMB before he was buried secretly, was not disclosed by the Police. Read more 

Lagos signs MoU with YKA of China to enhance rice mill, food value chain (NewTelegraph)

As part of its effort to enhance the Lagos State-founded Imota Rice Mill and elevate its rice value chain, the adminstration of Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Yihai Kerry Arawana Holdings Co. Limited, based in China.

According to a public release by the Governor who is on working visit to China, YKA will provide technical, advisory support for the optimisation and efficiency of rice production using modern agricultural practices, training and other ancillary services.

While expressing hope that the partnership will make a real difference for the state in the effort provide secure and affordable food to citizens, the Governor said that the state is tapping into ‘their wealth of knowledge and technological advancements in rice milling and processing. Read more 

FRSC launches app to verify driver’s license, others (Vanguard) 

The Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, has launched its Mobile Application and National Crash Reporting Information System, NACRIS, to verify drivers license, number plates, speed detector amongst others.

The app which was launched by the FRSC on Thursday in Abuja, would also provide services such as eye witness report, emergency reports, black spot, National traffic radio, speed limiter verification, driving school standardization scheme verification, reminder for drivers licence, and vehicle paper renewal, and emergency contacts.

Speaking at the event, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, George Akume said the launch of both digital platforms which will raise awareness and sensitize bus drivers and passengers on the potential causative factors of road traffic crashes, marks a giant stride in the effort of the corp at implementing policies and creating a safer motoring environment by reducing crash related injuries and deaths on the highways. NIN-SIM linkage: Our systems functioning effectively – NIMC (Sun)

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has assured that its systems for National Identification Number (NIN) services are operating efficiently ahead of the NIN-SIM linkage deadline.

NIMC said services including NIN enrolment, verification, authentication, and data modification are running smoothly to accommodate the approaching deadline.

In a statement by its Spokesperson, Kayode Adegoke, the Commission noted that all of its over 10,000 enrolment centres, both nationwide and abroad, are fully operational. Read more 

Nigeria targets 30GW grid energy supply by 2030 (Punch)

The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has announced that Nigeria is committed to achieving universal energy access by 2060, with a short-term target of attaining 30GW of grid energy supply by 2030.

He disclosed this in a statement postedd on the Ministry’s media platform on Thursday.

Speaking at the China-Nigeria Economic Cooperation and Trade Conference in Beijing, China, Adelabu said, “In Nigeria, we are committed to achieving universal energy access by 2060, with a short-term target under our Vision 30:30:30 to attain 30GW of grid energy supply with a 30 per cent renewable energy mix by 2030, and a long-term goal of universal energy access.” Read more

Kano LG polls: Court restrains KANSIEC from selling forms at N10m, N5m (DailyTrust)

A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has restrained Kano State Independence Electoral Commission (KANSIEC) from collecting the sum of N10million and N5million from contestants into the offices of Chairmanship and Councillorship positions respectively in the forthcoming local government elections in the state.

The presiding Judge, Justice Emeka Nwite granted the order on Wednesday.

Plaintiffs in the suit are Action Peoples Party (APP), Action Democratic Party (ADP) and Social Democratic Party (SDP). Read more

Fuel price hike: Kwara directs deployment of free buses to ease movement (Tribune)

Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq of Kwara State has directed the immediate deployment of buses to various parts of the metropolis to ease the movement of commuters.

In a statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary (CPS) to the governor, Rafiu Ajakaye, it was announced that the buses would be available for boarding free of charge.

“The buses are intended to transport people to the most central destinations free of charge. We hope that those attending the SUBEB job placement interviews will find this service helpful, particularly in the metropolis,” the statement read. Read more

The Lagos chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has urged President Bola Tinubu to prioritize the welfare of Nigerians by immediately reversing the price hike of petrol to its previous level.

The pump price of petrol was on Tuesday raised to ₦855, ₦897 (depending on the location per litre) from ₦568 by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL).

French woman describes horror at learning she was drugged and raped for years (BBC)

A French woman who was raped by unknown men over 10 years after being drugged to sleep by her husband told a court on Thursday of her horror at learning how she had been abused.

Gisèle Pélicot, who is 72, was giving evidence on day three of the trial in Avignon, south-east France, of 51 men – including her husband of 50 years, Dominique. All are accused of rape.

Documents before court indicate that Dominique Pélicot, 71, admitted to police that he got satisfaction from watching other men have sex with his unconscious wife. Read more 

Teen charged with killing 4 at Georgia high school had been focus of earlier tips about threats (VOA)

More than a year ago, tips about online posts threatening a school shooting led Georgia police to interview a 13-year-old boy, but investigators didn’t have enough evidence for an arrest. On Wednesday, that boy opened fire at his high school outside Atlanta and killed four people and wounded nine, officials said.

The teen has been charged as an adult in the deaths of Apalachee High School students Mason Schermerhorn and Christian Angulo, both 14, and instructors Richard Aspinwall, 39, and Christina Irimie, 53, Georgia Bureau of Investigation Director Chris Hosey said at a news conference.

At least nine other people — eight students and one teacher at the school in Winder, about an hour’s drive northeast of Atlanta — were taken to hospitals with injuries. All were expected to survive, Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith said. Read more

Harvey Weinstein indecent assault case ended by U.K. prosecutors (NBC)

British prosecutors said on Thursday they had discontinued indecent assault charges against former Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein after concluding there was no realistic chance of securing a conviction.

When it authorized charges against Weinstein two years ago, Britain’s Crown Prosecution Service said the alleged assault had taken place in August 1996 in London, with police adding the accusation had involved a woman now aged in her 50s.

“Following a review of the evidence in this case, the CPS has decided to discontinue criminal proceedings against Harvey Weinstein,” said Frank Ferguson, head of the CPS’ Special Crime and Counter Terrorism Division. Read more

Drug testers ask for Haaland and 2 dead Norway players (ABC)

Norway’s men’s team received a visit from the country’s anti-doping agency this week, but while this is a usual occurrence in football, what made this instance remarkable was the players they asked to test.
