Pastor pleads guilty to defilement of two sisters (Guardian)

A 48-year-old pastor, Nduka Anyanwu, on Wednesday, pleaded guilty to defiling and impregnating two teenage sisters, before a Yaba Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

Anyanwu is facing a two-count charge of defilement.

Following his guilty plea to both charges, the Chief Magistrate Mrs A. Adedayo, remanded the defendant in a custodial center and adjourned the case to Sept. 15, for facts and sentencing.

Earlier, the Police Prosecutor, ASP Roman Unuigbe, told the court that the defendant committed the offences sometime in June, at Oshodi area of Lagos.

He said that the defendant, who is a Pastor, had slept with the two sisters, aged 17 and 13, respectively, (names withheld), on several occasions and impregnated them. Read more

Violence as Taskforce ‘kills’ two motorists in Lagos (Vanguard)

Two commercial motorists were Wednesday morning allegedly killed by officials of the Lagos State Taskforce at Abule Egba following a disagreement.

The victims said to be a driver and conductor, were allegedly shot by the officials for yet to be ascertained reasons.

Another account indicated that the Taskforce officials crushed the driver with their patrol vehicle, a development that provoked the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in the axis.

At the time of this report, the crisis was said to have escalated to Alakuko with sporadic gunshots heard and bottles flung across the road.

Motorists caught up in the chaos alleged that some road users were hit by stray bullets while multiple accidents were recorded as people struggled to leave the scene of violence.

Commuters also lamented the absence of commercial vehicles which forced most of them to trek for long distances. Read more

Killer naval ratings: Police refused to take my report, says trader (Punch)

A spare parts trader, Cletus Ben-Onyejimbe, has revealed how efforts to report an affray that led to the murder of a peacemaker, Collins Osagie, were allegedly frustrated by the police at the Okokomaiko division.

Osagie was tortured to death last Monday by a group of naval ratings led by Petty Officer Awosanya Olufemi of the CND Apapa Naval Base.

Olufemi had bought an item worth N250 from Ben-Onyejimbe at his shop in Iyana Isasi, in the Okokomaiko area of Lagos State.

He wanted to return the item, but the refusal of the trader to refund his money led to a fight between them.

Osagie offered to settle the dispute, including refunding the N250.

His gesture was, however, interpreted as an insult and he was beaten to death by the colleagues of the rating, who were called to the scene.

The spare parts trader, who fled after the incident escalated, told PUNCH Metro that he was the prime target of the attack. Read more 

Dubai resident allegedly defrauds Lagos businessman of N1.1m (Punch)

A businessman, Chukwu Mbaonyeka-John, has accused a software engineer, Henry Izuchukwu, of defrauding him of N1,150,000 over a failed business deal.

PUNCH Metro gathered that Mbaonyeka-John, who operates in the Ikeja area of Lagos, paid Izuchukwu, who resides in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, the money to purchase cartons and other accessories for his phone business.

However, after receiving the money, it was alleged that Izuchukwu reneged on the agreement to supply the products and also refused to refund Mbaonyeka-John.

Speaking to PUNCH Metro, Mbaonyeka-John said Izuchukwu took advantage of living in another country to defraud him.

While urging relevant authorities to intervene in the matter, Mbaonyeka-John said a complaint had been filed at the Lagos State Police Command.

The Enugu State indigene said, “Henry Izuchukwu is a software engineer until he travelled to Dubai early this year. Before he travelled, he did some jobs for me and I paid him. I never owed him a dime. Read more

Lagos arraigns boat driver for death of 12 passengers (Guardian)

A commercial boat driver, Happiness Elebiju, suspected to have caused the incident that killed 12 persons at Ilashe Waterfront on July 29, was yesterday arraigned before a Lagos High Court in Ikeja.

Elebiju was arraigned before Justice Josephine Oyefeso on a 10-count charge brought against him by the Lagos State government. He pleaded not guilty to the offence bordering on involuntary manslaughter. The suspect was alleged to have operated the boat that killed 12 passengers due to overcrowding and illegal activities.

At the resumed proceedings, the Director of Public Prosecution, Mrs Olayinka Adeyemi, said the defendant was being charged with involuntary manslaughter.

Following his plea, DPP prayed the court to remand the defendant in a correctional centre, adding that the state was ready to commence trial.

She noted that there were two witnesses in court who were ready to testify against the defendant. But the defence counsel, Emmanuel Okedi, urged the court to grant him time to prepare for trial. He submitted that he was just served the notice in the court.

The judge, therefore, adjourned trial till August 26, and ordered the defendant to be remanded in prison custody. Read more

Eight Lagos naval ratings torture peacemaker to death over N250 (Punch)

Attempts by a peacemaker, Collins Osagie, to settle a disagreement between a spare parts trader and a naval rating in the Okokomaiko area of Lagos State, has cost him his life.

Osagie, a bus driver, was tortured to death for offering to pay the rating N250, the main cause of his disagreement with the trader.

A video of the torture, captured by a resident and posted on Instagram, revealed the moments two of the uniformed men punched and kicked the victim into a gutter.

The 34-year-old was later rushed to a private medical facility where he died.

Photos of the deceased’s corpse, obtained by PUNCH Metro, revealed visible torture marks on different parts of the body. His head also appeared to have been fractured. Read more

Hoodlums stab Lagos motorist to death defending a jaywalker (Punch)

When 29-year-old Sadiq Ayanshola left his house for work on Saturday, August 1, he sadly did not know it would be his last day on earth.

Ayanshola lived on Prince Ademola Street, Ogunojule Egan, in the Igando area of Lagos State, and worked as a motor mechanic. The curtains drew on the man’s life on the evening of that Saturday after hoodlums stabbed him in the chest during an argument in the Igando area and he died.

It is not an uncommon occurrence in a densely populated state like Lagos to come across two or more motorists arguing fiercely (in road rage) or even attempting to beat up one another over car dent and road related issues.

For many residents of the state, it is common knowledge that no motorist wants to accept that they are wrong in case of a road infraction and would rather resort to arguments to justify their claims. Read more

Father defiles 15-year-old daughter to test her virginity (Punch)

 A 40-year-old man, Gbenga Taiwo, has been arrested by the police for allegedly defiling his daughter, Folake (not real name).

Taiwo, a widower, and his 15-year-old daughter live together in a rented apartment at Baruwa, Ipaja area of Lagos State.

City Round learnt that the father had been constantly molesting the girl since she was 13 by dipping his fingers into her private parts.

Folake, having got tired of the molestation, was said to have reported his father to their landlord who warned Taiwo to desist from the act. Read more

NDLEA uncovers 40ft container of tramadol, others in Lagos (Guardian)

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has uncovered another 40ft container loaded with tramadol and other banned drugs at the Brawal terminal in Lagos.

A statement by the NDLEA Head of Public Affairs, Mr Jonah Achema, said the Chairman, Col. Muhammad Abdallah retired, disclosed this on Wednesday in Abuja.

Abdallah said that the seizure followed a recent one made by the police of a 40ft container loaded with cartons of brushes, cartons of tramadol and other banned drugs.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Police detectives in Apapa Area Command of Lagos State had intercepted a 40-foot container laden with drugs suspected to be tramadol and codeine on Aug. 6.

The container was intercepted offshore and taken to a bonded terminal in Apapa. Read more

Lagos artiste accuses police of assault, extortion (Punch)

A Lagos-based artiste, Prince Johnson, has accused some policemen attached to the Igando Police Station of allegedly assaulting and extorting him.

PUNCH Metro learnt that Johnson was on his way to a movie set on Saturday, August 16, 2020, when he was accosted by four policemen and ordered to park his vehicle.

Johnson alleged that the policemen labelled him an Internet fraudster after searching his phone and car without finding anything incriminating.

The victim told our correspondent that the cops later took him to the station, where he was asked to pay N50,000 to secure his freedom. Read more
