Patient tests positive to Monkeypox at LASUTH (Vanguard)
A 40-year-old patient on admission at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, LASUTH, has tested positive to the Monkeypox virus even as the hospital has shut down its orthopaedics unit.
The unnamed patient was said to be a road traffic accident victim who has been on admission in the Bola Tinubu, BT, Orthopaedics ward of the hospital since 26th of June, 2022.
Vanguard gathered that the patient developed a facial rash that was similar to one of the symptoms of Monkeypox.
As part of maintaining a high index of suspicion, the hospital obtained samples from the patient for investigation for Monkeypox and varicella on the 22nd of July, 2022. Read more
Lagos median rent hits new high of N900k (Punch)
The median cost of renting a 2-bedroom apartment in Lagos has hit a new high of N900,000 per year, findings by The PUNCH have revealed.
A comprehensive evaluation of average rent across 19 different parts of Lagos showed that while a 2-bedroom apartment in the Ayobo area (one of the cheapest) of the state went as low as N400,000, rates went as high as N10m in the Ikoyi area of the state.
Median market rent represents the equidistant rent, by unit type (types of flats) as determined in the annual survey of rents for a given period.
The survey aggregates average rates in different parts of a geographical locale with a view to striking a mid-point between the highest and lowest rental rates. Read more
TOOAN Chairman recants, says ‘I lied against MC Oluomo’ (Vanguard)
The Tricycle Owners and Operators Association of Nigeria (TOOAN) Zone ‘C’ Chairman Alhaji Azeez Abiola (aka Istijabah) has apologised to the Chairman of Lagos State Parks and Garages Management Committee, Alhaji Musiliu Akinsanya (MC Oluomo) over his earlier statement, adding that he lied against him.
Abiola in a video broadcast said his statement during the crisis between him and Akinsanya was not true and spoke out of annoyance.
He had alleged that Akinsanya killed one Hamburger, Baba Esi, Ade Lawyer and a host of others.
Abiola’s retraction followed a peaceful meeting between the duo where the former Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) Hakeem Odumosu (retd) settled their crisis. Read more
Students kick as gunmen abduct LAUTECH final year student (Nation)
Students of Ladoke Akintola University (LAUTECH) have protested against the abduction of a final year student, Rachael Opadele by gunmen.
Opadele of the department of Fine and Applied Arts with matric no 170886 was reportedly abducted in the early hours of Friday in a hotel at Aaba , a community close to the institution.
The Students Union Government (SUG) of the institution charged the Federal and State governments to secure her release without further delay.
They also demanded solution to incessant kidnapping and raping of female students in the institution. Read more

Ortom: Benue pays highest wage bill in north (Nation)
Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom has said the government pays the highest wage bill in Northern Nigeria which has compounded the issue of salary payment.
Ortom, who spoke yesterday on a television programme, also decried the ‘lawlessness’ that has engulfed the nation, saying ‘Nigerians are living in distress’.
He explained that Benue State, which is predominantly an agrarian state, is paying the highest wage bill in the north, ranking after Lagos and Rivers states. He emphasized that his administration has been able to reduce the burden of unpaid salaries.
Governor Ortom also noted that despite the paucity of funds, his administration was working assiduously to clear outstanding salary arrears, stressing that with the domestication of the PENCOM law, the state government has contributed over N5 billion to take care of pensions in the near future. Many shut out as INEC ends voters’ registration (DailyTrust)
Despite spirited efforts, many Nigerians were unable to register for Permanent Voters Cards (PVCs) as the exercise ended yesterday.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had ruled out the possibility of extending the exercise, saying it needs time to scrutinise the voters’ register to clean up possible incidents of double registration, print permanent voters’ cards (PVC), among others.
Some state governments had declared work-free days to enable residents to complete their voter registration exercise before the July 31 deadline.
However, our correspondents, who visited different registration areas yesterday, reported that many centres were crowded with many waiting in queue as of 6:00pm. Read more
Air Force to establish aircraft manufacturing plant in Osun (Channels)
The Nigerian Air Force has said it is concluding arrangement for the establishment of an Aircraft Manufacturing Plant in Osogbo the Osun state capital as part of an effort to develop and expand the nation’s aviation sector.
Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Oladayo Amao made the disclosure during the matriculation ceremony of students of the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) in Kaduna State on Sunday, saying discussions are already ongoing with the relevant foreign partners on the project.
He said that the Air Force relocated its Research and Development Centre from Kaduna to Osogbo in Osun State early this year in order to leverage the vibrant machine tools industry located in the city.
Air Marshal Amao explained that Aviation city in Osogbo will include a maintenance repair organisation and an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle production center among others, all geared to add value to the aviation city project. Read more
2,512 PDP members, LGA exco, others join Kebbi APC (Sun)
No fewer than 2,512 card-carrying members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Shanga Local Government Area of Kebbi State defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state.
The decampees received in Shanga, headquarters of Shanga Local Government, included, Alhaji Yakubu Dala, who was the former PDP Chairman of the Local Government.
Just as the event was about to end , another set of decampees from Democratic People’s Party , (DPP) led by Alhaji Basiru Mai- DPP dumped their party to join APC at the event .
Dala, while speaking during a reception for him and his supporters, explained that he led 2,512 PDP members to join APC with all the Exco members, delegates, women and youth leaders in the area. Read more
Nichelle Nichols, Uhura of ‘Star Trek’ fame, dies at 89 (RTE)
Martin Luther King Jr. himself once praised Ms Nichols, who broke ground with her powerful performance at a time when black actors more often were cast as servants or criminals.
Ms Nichols, who had trained in ballet and musical theater, at one point told “Star Trek” creator Gene Roddenberry that she wanted to quit the show to return to the theater.
But when she mentioned that to Dr King, in a chance meeting recounted by the Hollywood Reporter:

Breaking Bad statues shine light on actors in Albuquerque (RTE)
Bronze statues of mythical methamphetamine cookers Walter White and Jesse Pinkman were installed at a convention centre in Albuquerque on Friday to celebrate the Breaking Bad TV series and its entertainment legacy.
Local politicians including Albuquerque mayor Tim Keller joined Breaking Bad stars Bryan Cranston, Aaron Paul and director Vince Gilligan to help unveil the artwork, donated by Gilligan and Sony Pictures.
The 2008-2013 show and its ongoing prequel Better Call Saul helped fuel a renaissance in filmmaking across New Mexico, while also cutting close to Albuquerque’s real-life struggles with drug addiction and crime.
Gilligan said he recognised that the statues of “two fictional, infamous meth dealers” will not be universally cherished in New Mexico. Read more

Since the movie landed in theaters in March, the multiverse adventure turned into the rare indie sleeper hit at the box office on its journey to becoming A24’s highest-grossing film of all time. Born Finneas O’Connell, the musician turned 25 on Saturday 30 July. He has written and produced for a number of prolific artists but most notably his sister, Eilish, with whom he co-wrote both her No 1 albums.
Together the duo have won multiple Grammys, including Record of the Year and Album of the Year, along with an Oscar for their James Bond theme “No Time to Die”, which featured in Daniel Craig’s last outing as 007.

Oleksiy Vadatursky: Ukraine grain tycoon killed in Russian shelling of Mykolaiv (BBC)
One of Ukraine’s richest businessmen has been killed with his wife in “massive” Russian shelling of the southern city of Mykolaiv.
Oleksiy Vadatursky, 74, and his wife Raisa died when a missile hit their home overnight, local officials said.
Mr Vadatursky owned Nibulon, a company involved in grain exports. He had also received the “Hero of Ukraine” award.
Mykolaiv mayor Oleksandr Senkevych said it was probably the heaviest Russian bombardment of the city so far. Read more
Lawal wins Nigeria second gold in weightlifting (Punch)
Weightlifter Rafiatu Lawal won Team Nigeria’s second gold medal in the women’s 59kg category of the ongoing Commonwealth Games in Birmingham on Sunday.
Lawal clinched gold by lifting a combined total lift of 206kg – 110kg in snatch and 116kg in Clean and Jerk- to win the women’s 59kg weightlifting event and also set a new Commonwealth Games record.
The Nigerian successfully lifted 90 kg in her first attempt, set a Commonwealth Games record, and went right on top of the standings in Snatch.
Though, she failed to lift 94kg in her second attempt and went for 95kg in her third attempt. Read more

Nigeria lifter, Umoafia Edidiong, Sunday, won a bronze medal in the Men’s 67KG category.
Umoafia lifted 130kg in the snatch, and 160kg in the Clean and Jerk with a total of 290kg to win the second medal for Nigeria.
Edidiong finished third behind young weightlifter, Jeremy Lalrinnunga who smashed two Games records on his way to a sensational gold medal win as he added a second yellow metal to India’s tally.
