Patrick Doyle berates young, wave-making musicians

Veteran Nollywood actor, Patrick Doyle, recently took a swipe at the young music acts making waves saying they have no respect for their senior colleagues in the industry.

The ace broadcaster made this known during a tribute night and street concert held in honour of late Sir Victor Uwaifo by the Copyright Society of Nigeria (COSON).

In his remark at the ceremony, Doyle admonished younger music acts for their absence at the ceremony, which was held in Lagos.

“How come on this day that Victor Uwaifo is being honored in Lagos, I am sure that as we are speaking right now there will be at least 30 top-rated Nigerian musicians in Lagos today and none of them is here. They have no respect,” he said.

Doyle also said the late Uwaifo sacrificed a lot to ensure there are structures for the Nigerian music industry. “Sir Victor Uwaifo is arguably the greatest musical icon this country produced. It is on record that his record ‘Joromi’ broke records universally, so today, I am the happiest man in the world when I see young musicians rocking stages in New York, Sans Francisco, and all over the world but there is a disconnect,” he said. “They have absolutely no respect for the people who came before them, they all think that they started what is going on, Sir Victor Uwaifo, Sir Shina Peters, Tony Okoroji these people sacrificed a large chunk of their careers to set up the things that they are now enjoying, on several occasions some of this young people have been brought into the board of COSON, they say come and understand this thing, they never attend board meetings.”

Continuing, Doyle said, “Sir Shina Peters, who is a busy man has never missed board meetings but all the young people they brought to the board never attended meetings. Victor Uwaifo even when he stopped being a member of the board did not miss any COSON event, not one COSON event took place that he was not physically present, when some of these same young people who have no respect planned a coup to over throne the man who built this building, they waited for this building to be built, they waited for the money to be in COSON’s account then they staged a coup inside this place, Sir Victor Uwaifo was the man who crushed the coup inside this hall but I appeal to this young people to take their eyes away from greed and let us build because what they are enjoying now someone built it, they have to also build what they are working with now so that even their children will participate.”

In attendance at the ceremony include Ebenezer Obey, Sir Shina Peters, Righteous man, Steve Black, Felix Duke, Koffi da Guru, Emeka Ossai, Richard Ayodele Cole, and many others. (Nation)
