Paul Scholes charged with misconduct by FA (DailyMail)

Paul Scholes has been charged by the FA with breaching betting rules while he was a co-owner and director at Salford City.

He could face a fine or even a ban after allegedly placing 140 bets between August 2015 and January this year.

The news comes just four weeks after Scholes resigned as manager of Oldham Athletic following a tempestuous 31-day tenure.

Scholes has been charged with breaching FA Rule E8, which relates to the FA’s betting regulations. It is the same rule that former Peterborough director of football, Barry Fry, was suspended for breaching.

Fry was suspended from ‘all football and football-related activity for 4 months, 3 months of which are suspended for 2 years’. The FA state that a bet can’t be placed on an event ‘in which the participant has any influence, either direct or indirect’.

Prior to that, he had avoided controversy. But during the 2014 World Cup he worked as a columnist and tipster for a prominent bookmaker and an FA statement on Tuesday suggests he is an active gambler.

Scholes declined to comment on Tuesday night and there was no word from BT Sport, who employ the 44-year-old as a pundit. Read more
