In a strongly worded statement, Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, has demanded immediate action against those propagating anti-Igbo sentiment in Lagos. Responding to recent genocidal threats on social media, Obi reiterated the need for national unity and adherence to constitutional rights.
“I am deeply disturbed, reading some genocidal threats on X against the Igbo tribe, calling for their relocation,” Obi stated on his verified X handle. He went on to warn, “Let me respectfully warn that such rhetoric threatens our unity and is fundamentally opposed to our Constitution, which guarantees every Nigerian the right to live and work freely anywhere in the country.”
The former Anambra State governor called for swift and decisive action from authorities. “Those in authority must show leadership and urgently speak out against such divisive rhetoric,” he insisted. “Immediate action should be taken to investigate, arrest, and prosecute those behind this heinous agenda, serving as a deterrent to others who might consider pursuing similar paths that threaten our national security and unity.”
Obi’s statement comes at a time of heightened tensions in Lagos, with some individuals calling for the relocation of Igbo residents. Obi stressed the importance of national cohesion, stating, “We can only overcome our national challenges if we act together as one people United under God.”
Addressing both the government and fellow citizens, Obi urged for a united front against divisive elements. “I urge all Nigerians to stand united against this divisive rhetoric and to champion unity, tolerance, and understanding,” he said. “Our future depends on our ability to live and work together harmoniously.”
He also emphasised the role of security agencies in maintaining peace and protecting citizens’ rights. “The government and security agencies must act swiftly to protect this fundamental principle and ensure that every Nigerian can live free from fear of discrimination or persecution,” Obi asserted.
