Val Obienyem, the Media Adviser to Peter Obi has refuted reports that the Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 election was arrested by the Department of State Services (DSS) in Anambra.

Addressing the rumours in a statement issued on Tuesday, Obienyem dismissed the reports as false and baseless.

He disclosed that Obi was not even in Anambra at the time of the alleged arrest. Read more 

Retired judge in dock for ‘assaulting’ neighbour’s wife (DailyTrust)

A retired Upper Sharia Court judge, Mahmud Shehu, on Tuesday, September 10, 2024, was docked in a Magistrates’ Court, in Zaria, Kaduna, for allegedly assaulting a visually impaired housewife.

The prosecutor, Insp. Adamu Abubakar, told the court on Tuesday in Zaria that the defendant was charged with trespass and assault.

Offence, he said, is contrary to sections 327, 237 and 239 of Penal Code Law of Kaduna State 2017. Read more

FG unveils affordable homeownership mortgage fund (Punch)

The Ministry of Finance on Tuesday unveiled plans for a market-driven mortgage fund aimed at expanding access to affordable homeownership in Nigeria.

Spearheaded by the Minister of Finance, Mr. Wale Edun, the initiative is part of the One Million Homes Presidential Initiative.

The fund, known as the Ministry of Finance Incorporated Real Estate Investment Fund, is designed to provide low-cost mortgage options, particularly for pension account holders, enabling a broader segment of the population to own homes. Read more

Pantami: ASUU seeks end to victimisation of members in FUTO, LASU, others (Vanguard)

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has demanded an immediate end to the continued persecution and victimisation of its members at the Federal University of Technology FUTO, Owerri, by the Vice Chancellor, for their opposition to “the controversial promotion” of a former Minister for Communication and Digital Economy, Dr Isa Ibrahim Ali Pantami, to the rank of a Professor.

ASUU also decried similar victimisation being meted out to its members in some other universities for standing against anomalies and gross abuse of due process.

The academic body in a press release signed by Professor Michael Ugwuene, and Comrade Charles Osodeke, ASUU Chairperson, and Secretary, Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike, MOUAU, chapter, frowned at the withholding of the salaries of some of its members in some universities. Patient found dead in hospital’s kitchen oven (Metro)

An investigation has been launched after a patient was found dead in a catering oven at a hospital.

Police were called to Kettering General Hospital after the unnamed man’s body was discovered on Friday.

Former Spice Girl Mel B is among dozens of Black Britons urging Parliament to update the country’s equality laws and prohibit Afro hair discrimination.

In an open letter to lawmakers on Tuesday, campaigners including Mel B, singer Beverley Knight and lawmaker Paulette Hamilton called for the U.K. to introduce a law to recognize Afro hair as a protected characteristic.

“For too long, people with Afro hair have experienced unjust treatment in U.K. society and the current law is not direct enough to govern businesses, schools and the public to prevent serious harm,” read the open letter, released ahead of World Afro Day on Sunday. Read more

James Earl Jones, voice of Darth Vader, dies aged 93 (BBC)

American actor James Earl Jones, best known for being the voice of the Star Wars villain Darth Vader, has died aged 93.

He died early on Monday morning surrounded by his family, agent Barry McPherson said.

Jones starred in dozens of films including Field of Dreams, Coming To America, Conan the Barbarian and The Lion King. He was best known for giving the Star Wars supervillain Darth Vader his distinctive, gravelly voice. Read more

Luton Town have announced the signing of ex-Super Eagles Star, Victor Moses on a free transfer.

The 33-year-old was a Premier League title winner with Chelsea in the 2016/17 season.

Police have released bodycam footage of NFL star Tyreek Hill being detained ahead of their opening match of the NFL season.

The video showed the altercation between the Miami-Dade County officers and Hill, where the latter was dragged out of his car.

Ipswich legend Burley being treated for cancer (BBC)

Ipswich Town legend and former Scotland manager George Burley is undergoing cancer treatment, the Premier League club has announced.

The ex-Scotland international, who managed the national team from January 2008 to November 2009, was diagnosed after feeling unwell earlier this year.

Burley, 68, played for Ipswich from 1973 to 1985 and completed 500 appearances for the club. He was manager at Ipswich from 1994 to 2002. Read more
