The police, on Wednesday, arraigned eight men in Lagos for allegedly impersonating military officers.

The defendants include Akpan Joel, 31; John Johnson, 31; Busayo Akinola, 33; and Simeon Anthony, 43.

Others are Adamu Sani, 30; Cyril Ogbe, 27; Godfrey Agba, 36; and Benjamin Achi, 29.

The defendants, whose addresses were not provided, appeared before a Yaba Chief Magistrates’ Court. Read more

Traders defy court order, LASG, return to distressed 5-floor building (Independent)

Some occupants of a distressed five-floor building located at 13/17 Breadfruit Street, Lagos Island, has defied Court Order by using force to return to the building barely one week after the Lagos State Building Con­trol Agency (LASBCA) evacu­ated them from the building.

LASBCA had on Monday, May 16, 2022, evacuated occu­pants of the distressed building in compliance with an order of court for it to be re-stabilised or face demolition as directed by the stability report of the Lagos State Materials Testing Labo­ratory submitted to the court.

In a ruling delivered on May 13, 2022 in the suit filed by Attorney General of Lagos State against African Alliance Insurance and 13 others, a Spe­cial Offences Court in Ikeja had directed LASBCA to evacuate the occupants to implement a non-destructive test, NDT re­port submitted to the court by LASBCA.

The court was presided over by Magistrate A.I. Abina also directed that the NDT report implementation including to­tal renovation of the building be carried out while consider­ing the interest of other defen­dants/ occupants. Read more

Lagos explosion: Gas plant owner dies, lawyer insists on N800m compensation (Punch)

Justice Oyindamola Ogala of the Lagos State High Court, on Monday, struck out the criminal charges against the owner of Fash Oil Limited, Alhaji Waidi Fashola, popularly known as Larafash, following his death.

The cause of the sudden death of the defendant is unknown.

The Lagos State Government had dragged Fashola to court following an explosion at his gas plant, Bestroof, on Cardoso Road, Baruwa Estate, Ipaja.

No fewer than seven people died in the explosion, which happened on October 8, 2020, on Baruwa Estate, in the Ipaja area of the state. Read more

Court to MC Oluomo, NURTW, others: don’t collect levies from non-members (Nation)

The Federal High Court, Lagos Division, Tuesday granted an application restraining a former chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) Lagos branch, Alhaji Musiliu Akinsanya, a.k.a. MC Oluomo, and eight others from collecting union dues and levies from commercial drivers that are non-union members at all motor parks in Lagos State.

The ex parte application also restrained the state Government from further enforcing an N800 transport union levy on transporters and commercial vehicles in the state, pending the hearing and determination of the plaintiffs’ substantive originating motion.

The eight other respondents affected by the ex parte order are the Registered Trustees of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW); Registered Trustees of Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN); Registered Trustees of Nigerian Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO); Alhaji Lawal Yusuf Othman; Lagos State Government; Attorney-General of Lagos State; Inspector-General of Police (IGP) and Director of State Security Service (SSS).

Justice Peter Lifu granted the application following an ex parte motion filed by a lawyer, Mr. Olukoya Ogungbeje, for himself and on behalf of a new association, the Transport Union Society of Nigeria (TUSON). Read more

Police arraign Lebanese for crushing 3 Lagos residents (Punch)

A Lebanese, John Gerges, has been arraigned before the Ebute Meta Magistrate’s Court for allegedly crushing three people while driving on Fafunwa Street, in the Victoria Island area of Lagos State.

Gerges was arraigned on Monday on seven counts of causing grievous bodily harm.

He was also alleged to have driven without a driving licence and valid vehicle papers.

The charges read in part, “That you, John Marck Gerges, on May 4, 2022, around 7am along Fafunwa Street, Victoria Island, Lagos, in the Lagos Magisterial District, drove a dark coloured Toyota Forerunner with number plate, AGL547FY, in a dangerous and reckless manner, causing the fatal and grievous injury on one Omotola Akinsanya, thereby committing an offence contrary to Section 245 of the Criminal Law of Lagos state, 2015. Dismissed policeman bags life imprisonment for defiling nine-year-old pupil (Punch)

An Ikeja Domestic Violence and Sexual Offences Court on Monday sentenced a dismissed policeman, Mohammed Alidu, to life imprisonment for defiling a nine-year-old school girl in a police barracks.

Justice Abiola Soladoye, in her judgment, held that Alidu was a disgrace to the police because he failed to uphold law and order and went about frolicking with an underage girl.

The News Agency of Nigeria reported that Soladoye held that the prosecution had convincingly proved the charge of defilement against the convict beyond any reasonable doubt.

She said the survivors’ evidence was fully corroborated by the medical evidence. Read more

Court jails man who poses as cart pusher to steal (Tribune)

A Lagos mobile court at Bolade Oshodi, headed by magistrate T. O. Fashina, has jailed for three months (3-months), a 32-year-old environmental offender, Abubakar Sanni, who posed under the guise of cart pushing, to vandalise and steal iron rods at Karimu Kotun area of Victoria Island, Lagos.

The Managing Director/CEO of LAWMA, Mr. Ibrahim Odumboni, made this known on Saturday, following the apprehension and prosecution of the cart pusher.

He said, “The Authority wants to make it clear that cart pushing remains outlawed in the state. The menace of cart pushers has led to the rise of indiscriminate waste disposal, coupled with the fact that criminal elements now hide under it to perpetuate their crimes.”

Odumboni noted that the Authority, since the inception of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration, had introduced various programmes and initiatives aimed at making Lagos cleaner and livable for all, as well as empowering PSP operators, to effectively discharge their statutory duties. Okada ban: Lagos to intensify crushing of seized motorcycles (Guardian)

Amid security reports that some of those parading as commercial motorcyclists are indeed hoodlums and bandits,  who have invaded Lagos, the  State Environmental and Special Offences Enforcement Unit, the  Task Force, said it will intensify the crushing of seized motorcycles.

According to the Task Force, this will send a signal that the agency is poised to enforce the ban on activities of commercial motorcyclists in six Local Councils of the state as announced by Governor Babajide Sanwo Olu.

Chairman of the Task Force, Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) Shola Jejeloye, who revealed this, told The Guardian that despite arrests, the number of Okada riders have increased in the state.

“For instance, if we arrest 50 today, you will see more than 150 motorcycles on the same spot when we return after two weeks. The agency is working, but these guys seem to have more money to buy new ones. Read more

Motorcycle ban: Police to arrest riders, passengers in Lagos (Guardian)

The Police Command in Lagos State says it will arrest both motorcyclists and passengers as part of measures to enforce the ban on commercial motorcycle operations in the state.

Its spokesman, Mr Benjamin Hundeyin, announced this on Saturday on his Twitter handle, monitored by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

“Under the new total ban of motorcycles in the six local government areas of Lagos State, passengers and riders alike will be arrested and prosecuted.

“The passenger is an accomplice. Ignorance will not be an excuse,” he declared. Read more
