Police arraign man for posing as doctor (Punch)

The Lagos State Police Command has brought before the Ikeja Magistrates’ Court one Ebuka Duru for allegedly parading himself as a medical doctor.

Duru was arraigned on Tuesday on four counts of conspiracy, stealing, impersonation and unlawful possession of medical instruments.

He pleaded not guilty to the charges.

It was gathered that Duru paraded himself as a medical doctor and commenced treatment of unsuspecting members of the public of various ailments. Read more

Sanwo-Olu: Poor health insurance bane of low life expectancy (ThisDay)

The Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu has attributed Nigeria’s low life expectancy to poor health insurance scheme.

Sanwo-Olu, also expressed his administration’s readiness to partner with the insurance industry to enhance the well-being of people through protection of their lives and material assets against unforeseen loses.

The governor stated these at the unveiling of Plum Insurance Brokers’ House in Lagos.

According to him, “as a people, we know that our life expectancy is 52 years. Libya, after series of war, still has life expectancy of 78 years, so what is wrong? To me, it is lack of insurance; we do not have health insurance. And that goes for everything,” he asserted. Read more

Nigeria railway modernisation project: LASG shuts Yaba/Jibowu road to motorists (Vanguard)

The Lagos State Government has announced plans to close down Yaba and Jibowu/Ogunmorin axis on the 16th and 23rd of November, 2019, respectively.

The closure is to pave way for the ongoing work on the Nigerian Railway Modernization Project: Lagos-Ibadan section with extension to Lagos Port at Apapa.

According to state Commissioner for Transportation, Dr Federic Oladeinde, who stated this Wednesday, the axis would be closed from 8:pm to 6:am till the next day for the level cross construction of the rail tracks. Read more

The Department of State Services (DSS) on Wednesday said #RevolutionNow crusader Omoyele Sowore was still in their custody because the appropriate to take him were yet to turn up.

This was contained in a statement released by spokesman Peter Afunanya where the agency insisted it was only appropriate that those who stood as sureties for Sowore have not come for him.

A Nigerian boy, Chika Ofili, has been recognised by the Westminster Under School, London, UK for propounding a new mathematical formula in solving number divisibility especially of 7. In a test assessed by Miss Mary Ellis, his Mathematics teacher, who is also the author of ‘The Aliens Have Landed and 174 Other Problems’ book, Chika was able to solve a divisibility problem associated with number 7 in mathematics.

According to her, “Something very exciting happened last Friday when one of my pupils, Chika Ofili, popped into the classroom and asked if he could tell me something he had thought of over the summer holidays. The Christian body said it is not partisan and does not support any candidate or party for the Kogi and Bayelsa governorship polls this weekend.

Governor Adegboyega Oyetola of Osun State, has released the sum of N472, 000, 000.00 to the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomosho, Oyo State, and the institution’s Teaching Hospital, Osogbo, Osun State.

The breakdown of the amount, Daily Sun gathered, indicates that, while N250,000,000.00 would go to the university, N222, 000,000.00 would go to the Teaching Hospital, Osogbo, for payment of salaries.

Venice floods: Climate change behind highest tide in 50 years, says mayor (BBC)

Severe flooding in Venice that has left much of the Italian city under water is a direct result of climate change, the mayor says.

The highest water levels in the region in more than 50 years will leave “a permanent mark”, Venice Mayor Luigi Brugnaro tweeted.

Two paintings up for auction in New York highlight a growing interest in artificial intelligence-created works — a technique that could transform how art is made and viewed but is also stirring up passionate debate. The art world was stunned last year when an AI painting sold for $432,500 (roughly Rs. 3 crores), and auctioneers are keen to further test demand for computer-generated works.

“Art is a true reflection of what our society, what our environment responds to,” said Max Moore of Sotheby’s.

“And so it’s just a natural continuation of the progression of art,” he added.

Sotheby’s will put two paintings by the French art collective Obvious up for sale on Thursday, including “Le Baron De Belamy.” Read more

Ex-Nigeria player Dickson Etuhu guilty of match-fixing in Sweden (BBC)

A Swedish appeals court has found former Nigeria international Dickson Etuhu guilty for attempted match-fixing.

The Court of Appeals in Stockholm said in a release on Wednesday said that it was clear that Etuhu and an unnamed former player tried to influence AIK keeper Kyriakos “Kenny” Stamatopoulos to fix a match in Sweden’s top division in 2017.

Etuhu, who played for several English clubs including Manchester City, Sunderland and Fulham, escaped a jail sentence but was instead fined and sentenced to serve probation, without further details being made public. Read more

Kosgei, Fraser-Pryce Listed for Woman Athlete of the Year Award (ThisDay)

Marathon world record holder Brigid Kosgei is one of five finalists for the Female World Athlete 2019 award.
