Police arrest 2 for robbing sex workers in Lagos (Punch)

The Lagos State Police Command has apprehended a gang of robbers for allegedly targeting and robbing three commercial sex workers on Adeniran Ogunsanya Street, Bode Thomas, Surulere Local Government Area of the state.

The state command’s spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed on Friday that the two suspects, whose identities were not disclosed, were taken into custody on August 28, 2024, for their involvement in the crime.

PUNCH Online gathered that on August 23, 2024, around 4.30 pm, the suspects allegedly picked up the three sex workers from Adeniran Ogunsanya Street in Bode Thomas, seeking their services. Read more 

Onyeka Onwenu buried in Lagos (Channels)

Nigerian music legend, Onyeka Onwenu, has been laid to rest in Lagos State.

The funeral service of the late musician, who was also known as the “Elegant Stallion”, was held at the Fountain of Life Church in Ilupeju area of Lagos on Friday.

The funeral service was followed by a private burial at a vault in Ikoyi. Read more

Nigerian-born Kelechi Ndukwe has made history by getting promoted to the rank of Commander in the US Navy.

Victor Agunbiade, a US Army Officer, shared the news on X, congratulating Ndukwe on his achievement.

“Ladies and Gentlemen, meet the newest US Navy Captain Kelechi Ndukwe. The first Nigerian to have a command of a US Navy War Ship! Congratulations on your promotion Captain! Well deserved!!!,” he wrote. Read more 

Sanwo-Olu pays compensation to Docemo fire victims (Tribune)

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Friday, in fulfilment of his promise, paid compensation to victims of the Docemo fire incident at Idumagbo Avenue by Tom Jones in the Lagos Island area of the state.

Speaking at the official symbolic presentation of bank drafts to victims of the Docemo fire incident, Governor Sanwo-Olu announced N2,500,000, N1,500,000, and N750,000 in compensation to different traders based on the enumeration process.

The governor said the payment of the compensation was a testament to his administration’s commitment to supporting those affected by the fire disaster. Read more

Ogun doctors suspend 25-day strike (Channels)

Members of the Ogun State chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association have suspended their ongoing strike action for four weeks to give room for a peaceful dialogue with the state government.

This decision was reached at the end of the emergency general meeting of the association which considered the hardship faced by the public while the warning strike was in force across state government facilities.

With this development, members of the association have been asked to resume duties at 8:00am on Monday, September 2, 2024. Read more

The Lagos State Task Force on Environment and Special Offences Enforcement Unit, has confirmed the arrest of 25 suspected hoodlums allegedly attacking motorists on Lekki-Epe Expressway.

The agency’s spokesperson, Mr Gbadeyan Abdulraheem, confirmed this in a statement issued on Friday in Lagos.

Abdulraheem said that the suspects were arrested during an operation that took place across key locations, including Chisco Roundabout, Elegushi, Ikate Roundabout, and Marwa Bus Stop. Read more

The Islamic Movement in Nigeria, also known as Shiites, has condemned the alleged forceful removal of Hijab by police officers in Abuja, describing it as a grave religious abuse and blasphemy.

According to a statement by Maryam Sani, on behalf of the Sisters Forum of the Islamic movement, the incident involved Muslim women in detention who were allegedly forced to remove their Hijab, a religious headscarf.

Police arrest ATM card swap syndicate, recover 54 cards, POS machine in Kaduna (Nation)

The Kaduna State Police Command has apprehended a syndicate allegedly involved in ATM card swap fraud, recovering 54 ATM cards and a POS machine in the process.

The command’s PPRO, ASP Mansir Hassan, in a statement said the suspects, Umar Yau of Zoo Road, Kano; Abdullahi Bukar of Tudun Wada, Kaduna; and Hussaini Sulaiman of Zoo Road, Kano, were arrested on August 27, 2024, around 11:00 pm, following a coordinated operation based on credible intelligence.

He stated “the trio were notorious for loitering around ATM machines, pretending to assist individuals unfamiliar with operating the machines. They would then deceitfully swap the victims’ ATM cards, allowing them to carry out unauthorized withdrawals from their accounts.” Read more

A One Tree Hill sequel series is reportedly in development at Netflix with several of its original cast members set to return.

Barry Manilow is suing Hipgnosis Songs Fund (HSF) in federal court in California seeking $1.5 million in unpaid bonuses related to the music rights company’s acquisition of his catalog four years ago.

The suit by the “Mandy” singer, along with his management company Hastings, Clayton & Tucker Inc, or Stiletto Entertainment, follows a similar lawsuit HSF filed earlier this month in London alleging breach of contract relating to the bonus payments. Russian attack on Ukraine’s Kharkiv kills at least 6, injures dozens (AlJazeera)

A Russian attack on the eastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv has killed at least six people, including a 14-year-old girl, and wounded dozens of others, Ukrainian officials have said.

“Occupiers killed a child right on the playground,” Kharkiv mayor Ihor Terekhov said in a statement on the Telegram messaging app on Friday.

Three other people were killed in a 12-storey apartment block that caught fire as a result of the attack, he said. Read more

Musk’s X banned in Brazil after disinformation row (BBC)

X, formerly Twitter, has been banned in Brazil after failing to meet a deadline set by a Supreme Court judge to name a new legal representative in the country.

Alexandre de Moraes ordered the “immediate and complete suspension” of the social media platform until it complies with all court orders and pays existing fines.

The row began in April, with the judge ordering the suspension of dozens of X accounts for allegedly spreading disinformation. Read more
