Police raid black spots, arrest 28 suspected criminals in Lagos (Punch)
The Lagos State Police Command, on Wednesday, said it arrested 28 suspected criminals after a raid on black spots in the state.
This was disclosed in a statement issued by the command’s spokesman, CSP Adekunle Ajisebutu.
The statement said the raid led by the Operations Department of the command was carried out around 8pm last night at Canal Axis in Ago-Ogota Area of the state.
This was in line with the directive of the state Commissioner of Police, CP Hakeem Odumosu, to dislodge hoodlums hiding in shanties across the state. Read more
2 convicted fraudsters lose 3 duplexes, over N200m to FG (Guardian)
Two convicted internet fraudsters, Tobilola Ibrahim Bakare and Alimi Seun Sikiru have lost cash and properties in the upscale Lekki axis of Lagos to the federal government.
This followed their arrest and successful prosecution by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC)
The forfeited assets include the sums of N196, 741, 216.82 and N7, 054, 852.01 in bank accounts; two vehicles, a Mercedes Benz E500 and a Toyota Hilux 2020.
Others are; a five-bedroom duplex situated at Ibrahim Eleto Street, Osopa London, Lekki, Lagos, a four-bedroom semi-detached duplex situated at Ologolo, Jakande, Lekki, Lagos, and another four bedroom semi-detached duplex in Southern View Estate, Mayor Court, Chevron Alternative Road, Lekki, Lagos. Super TV CEO: Court remands Chidinma in prison for 30 days (Punch)
Magistrate Adeola Adedayo of the Lagos State Magistrate Court in Yaba has ordered the remand of Chidinma Ojukwu, who allegedly stabbed the Chief Executive Officer of Super TV, Usifo Ataga, to death.
Magistrate Adedayo ordered the remand of Chidinma for 30 days following an application of the police counsel, Cyril Ejiofor.
Chidinma and Ataga reportedly lodged in a service apartment in the Lekki area of Lagos State and the corpse of the latter was discovered the next day in the room and the former fled, thus raising suspicion of her complicity in his death.
The police said they went after her and tracked her down at her father’s Alagomeji, Yaba residence. Read more
Police nab father over alleged defilement of four daughters in Lagos (Punch)
A father of six, Sunday Julius, is currently in police custody in Lagos over alleged defilement of four of his daughters aged seven, 10, 11 and 15.
Julius, who lives with his family in a room apartment in the Alimosho area of the state, was reportedly arrested on Monday following a complaint lodged by his wife at the Moshalashi Police Station.
Julius was said to have been apprehended about seven years ago after his eldest daughter opened up that he molested her.
He was however said to have been freed through the intervention of neighbours and relations. Read more
Man arraigned for defrauding 170 people of N10.7b (Punch)
The police have arraigned a 22-year-old man, Joshua Kayode, before a Federal High Court sitting in Ikoyi, Lagos, for allegedly defrauding 170 people to the tune of N10.7bn under a fake investment scheme.
Kayode was arraigned on Thursday before Justice Tijjani Ringim on 170 counts of conspiracy and obtaining money by false pretences alongside his company, Quintessential Investment Company Limited.
Counsel for the prosecution, Williams Tijjani, told the court that the defendant and others now at large, committed the offences between July 2020 and March 2021.
“The defendant defrauded the victims under the pretence of false multiple returns on investment and the offences committed by the defendant are contrary to sections 8 and 1 of the Advance Fee Fraud and other Fraud Related Offences Act, 2006,” Tijjani said. Read more
Woman arraigned for locking up 5-year-old nephew for 6 months (Punch)
The police in Lagos State have arraigned one Sharon Williams before the state Magistrates’ Court in Ogba for allegedly locking up and assaulting her five-year-old nephew (name withheld) for six months.
The 43-year-old Williams allegedly used a cutlass to inflict injuries on the boy’s head.
It was gathered that a neighbour reported the matter to the state Ministry of Women Affairs, which transferred the case to the Ministry of Youths, Sports and Social Development, while the Deputy Coordinator for Child Protection, Lateef Akinborode, said it took about five hours for the suspect to surrender herself for arrest after security agents tried to gain access into her apartment around 8 pm on July 14, 2021. Pregnant woman arrested for assaulting stepchildren in Lagos (Punch)
A pregnant stepmother, Opeyemi Salawudeen, has been arrested by men of the Lagos State Police Command for allegedly brutalising her husband’s children left in her care in the Ikola Odunsi area of Ipaja.
PUNCH Metro gathered that Opeyemi allegedly tortured 14-year-old Fawasi Lukmon to the point that he sustained visible injuries on different parts of his body.
Fawasi’s yet-to-be-identified younger sister was said to have also not been spared of the alleged torture by their stepmother.
It was gathered that Opeyemi allegedly intimidated the minors to prevent them from disclosing the sources of their injuries to inquisitive neighbours. Read more
2 ex-soldiers deny Evans in court (Tribune)
Two former soldiers of the Nigerian Army, Chilaka Ifeanyi and Victor Aduba, on Tuesday, denied being accomplices to the crimes of alleged kidnap kingpin, Chukwudimeme Onwuamadike alias Evans.
They made the denials during the resumption of their trial at an Ikeja High Court over two counts of kidnapping and conspiracy.
The ex-soldiers, who had earlier been dismissed by the Nigerian Army, are facing trial alongside Evans, Uche Amadi, Okwuchukwu Nwachukwu and Ogechi Uchechukwu for the alleged kidnap of Mr Donatius Dunu, the Chief Executive Officer of Maydon Pharmaceuticals. Read more
Court remands man for allegedly defiling 11-year-old girl (Guardian)
An Ikeja Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday remanded a 20-year-old unemployed man, Oriyomi Sanni, who allegedly defiled an 11-year-old girl.
Magistrate Mrs O.A Layinka, who did not take Sanni’s plea, ordered that he should be remanded in Kirikri Correctional Centre.
Layinka, however, directed the police to send the case file to the state Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for advice.
She adjourned the case until Aug. 25 for DPP advice.
Sanni, who resides at Ikorodu, Lagos State, is being tried for defilement. Read more
2 in court for allegedly receiving stolen SIM card (Nation)
Two men, Oriade Adeoye and Toheeb Malik, on Tuesday, appeared before a Yaba Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for allegedly being in possession of a stolen SIM card.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Adeoye, 24 and Malik, 35, are facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and receiving the stolen item, to which they, however, pleaded not guilty.
The Prosecutor, ASP Rita Momah, told the court that the defendants committed the offences on May 21 at Ajangbadi area of Lagos.
Momah said that the defendants were found with a stolen SIM card belonging to the complainant, Victor Oviewo. Read more
Alleged manslaughter: LASTMA, police testify against driver (Guardian)
Hearing continued at an Ikeja High Court on Monday, before Justice Oyindamola Ogala, on the involuntary manslaughter charges against Elijah Shokoya.
Officers of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and the Nigeria Police Force testified for the state at the continued hearing.
Shokoya, is standing trial for allegedly causing the death of a LASTMA officer, Mr Olawale Akinmade, on Jan. 26.
He was accused of mowing down the LASTMA officer, who was directing traffic on the Ikorodu Expressway by Demurin Junction, Ketu, Lagos, with his Opel Car with Lagos registration number AAA 74 GG.

Yoruba Nation rally: Coroner’s inquest into salesgirl’s death begins (Punch)
A coroner’s inquest into the death of Jumoke Oyeleke, the salesgirl, who was allegedly killed by a stray bullet during the Yoruba Nation rally in Lagos on July 3, began on Monday.
The coroner’s inquest, headed by Chief Magistrate M. K. O. Fadeyi, was held at the Lagos State Magistrates’ Court, Ogba.
Speaking at Monday’s sitting, Fadeyi stated the importance of the inquest, saying justice would be served. Read more
Lagos prosecutes man for alleged assault on LABSCA officers (Guardian)
The Lagos State Government has commenced prosecution of one Mr Kelly Omaneka for assaulting officers of the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LABSCA) on official assignment.
General Manager of the agency, Gbolahan Oki, an architect, said the assault happened on Thursday in the Oke Afa area of Lagos State during a routine monitoring exercise by the agency.
Oki explained that the officers, in line with the law, were at the site to demand planning permit or authorisation for the building construction when suddenly, the assailant came down from a black 4matic Mercedes Benz jeep and attacked a member of the team, thereby injuring him with a head butt.
Against all pleas, he threw caution to the wind and charged further at other officers, harassing them with the aid of hired thugs. Read more
NDLEA intercepts 35 wraps of cocaine, drugs en route Italy, Turkey (Guardian)
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), says it has recovered 35 wraps of cocaine from a lady passenger at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA), Ikeja, Lagos.
Mr Femi Babafemi, NDLEA’s Director of Media and Advocacy, disclosed this in a statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Abuja.
Babafemi said that the suspect, Okafor Ebere Edith was arrested on July 31, during the outward clearance of passengers on Air Cotevoire bound to Monrovia, Liberia.
He said the suspect, who tucked pellet of cocaine in her underwear to beat security checks at the airport, was however picked up for search.
This, he said, included questioning during which the wraps of the illicit drug were found on her. Read more
Lagos school secretary arraigned for alleged diversion of N6m school fees (Punch)
The secretary of a private primary school in Ifako, Lagos State, Oluwabusola Oluwatosin, has been brought before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court sitting in Ogba over alleged diversion of N6m belonging to the school.
The money was said to be school fees allegedly received in cash by Oluwatosin – contrary to the standing rule – but not remitted to the school’s bank account.
It was gathered that the secretary was mandated to collect only bank tellers for school fees payment from parents.
The management reportedly discovered the alleged fraud on May 21, 2021 after auditing the school’s financial records. Read more
Man remanded for turning job seeker into sex machine (DailyTrust)
A magistrates’ court in Ebutte-Metta, Lagos, has ordered the remand of one Kingsley Onoha for turning a female job seeker into a sex machine.
While presenting the charges, the prosecutor told the court that the lady had gone to the accused to ask for help to secure a job, but that the accused kept sleeping with her under the guise that the job had not started.
The prosecutor said the lady who became frustrated by the prolonged promises made to her by the accused reported the case to the police who promptly stepped in and arrested the suspect and charged him with rape and forceful abduction. Read more
2 LAWMA officers crushed to death in Abule-Egba (Guardian)
Two female highway sweepers in the employ of the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) were killed in the early hours of Thursday, in Abule-Egba area of the state.
It was learnt the sweepers lost their lives on duty at around 7:00am on the Abule-Egba jubilee bridge when a fast moving vehicle knocked them down at high speed.
Though one of them reportedly died instantly as her head was smashed, the second victim, whose legs were broken, was left to groan without attention, before she was eventually taken to an undisclosed hospital at Ile-Epo, where she later died.
The accident led to traffic gridlock on the axis, as a crowd blocked the bridge and the road inward Oshodi in solidarity with the victims. Read more
Woman nabbed for assaulting 10-year-old houseboy
A woman, identified simply as Onyebuchi, has been arrested by the Lagos State Police Command for allegedly maltreating her 10-year-old houseboy, identified only as Daniel, in the Bode Thomas area of the state.
It was gathered that Onyebuchi sent Daniel to get fuel for her, but while on his way, a yet-to-be-identified good Samaritan approached the boy when he saw him writhing in pain from the injuries he sustained during an alleged maltreatment by the woman.
While being questioned by the good Samaritan, Daniel said in a footage posted by @ubifranklintriplemg on Instagram, “They used sticks to beat me,” but when asked who was responsible for his condition, he said, “One person, who is my aunt.”
He added that he had not eaten that day. Read more
5 arrested for snatching car, corps member’s phone at gunpoint in Lagos (Punch)
Men of the Lagos State Police Command have arrested three suspects for allegedly dispossessing a man of his Lexus car at gunpoint in the Ikorodu area of the state.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Muyiwa Adejobi, said in a statement on Thursday that the suspects were arrested after an encounter with men of the Police Mobile Force Squadron 63 in Ikorodu.
He stated that a locally-made pistol, one expended cartridge, other weapons, a Toyota Camry car and the snatched Lexus car were recovered from the suspects.
Adejobi said, “Men of the Lagos State Police Command’s Special Squad, Ikeja, have arrested three suspected armed robbers, two weeks after they snatched a Lexus car at gunpoint in the Ikorodu area of the state on July 11, 2021. Read more
