Police arrest 70-year-old man for defiling teenage daughter (Vanguard)

Lagos State Police Command is currently investigating a 70-year-old farmer, named Bashiru Abiodun, for defiling his daughter.

Abiodun, who lives at No. 26, Papa-Ado Street in the Agbowa community of Lagos State, was arrested on August 29, 2024, by the Agbowa-Ejirin division of the community for defiling his 14-year-old daughter.

According to the victim’s mother, Mrs. Abiodun, “My daughter told me that her father had been sexually abusing her before I caught him defiling our daughter.” Read more

The Islamic State in West Africa Province (ISWAP) has claimed responsibility for the attack that led the killing of 34 villagers in Yobe State.

Daily Trust reported how the terrorists attacked Mafa town around 4pm, on Sunday, killing people and setting houses and shops on fire.

$2.8b spent on debt servicing in 7 months sparks concerns (Sun)

Nigeria’s escalating external debt obligations have ignited widespread concern as the nation spent an astounding $2.78 billion on foreign debt servicing in the first seven months of 2024. 

The substantial figure, accounting for 64% of the total $4.36 billion in international payments made by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) on behalf of the government during this period, has raised alarm over the country’s financial sustainability.

The proportion of funds allocated to debt servicing has surged dramatically, climbing from 46% in the same period last year to 64% this year. Read more

Brian Trueman, the writer behind the cartoon series Danger Mouse, has died at the age of 92, his son has said.

Posting on Facebook, Jonathan Trueman said his Manchester-born father had died in hospital on Sunday evening after a short illness.

Trueman had an illustrious career in television and radio, presenting the BBC children’s quiz show Screen Test as well as working at Granada TV. Read more

At least 129 dead in attempted jailbreak in Congo (AfricaNews)

An attempted jailbreak in Congo’s main prison in the capital left at least 129 people dead, most of them in a stampede, authorities said Tuesday.

A provisional assessment showed that 24 inmates were shot dead by “warning” gunshots as they tried to escape from the overcrowded Makala Central Prison in Kinshasa early Monday, Congolese Interior Minister Jacquemin Shabani said on the social platform X.

“There are also 59 injured people taken into care by the government, as well as some cases of women raped,” he said, adding that order has been restored at the prison, part of which was burned in the attack. Read more

A British national has said he is at a loss as to why the Nigerian police have accused him of planning to overthrow Nigeria’s government and placed a bounty on his head.

It was alleged by Nigeria’s police spokesperson on Monday that Andrew Wynne – and a co-conspirator – had built up a network of sleeper cells to destabilise Nigeria and had fled the country in the wake of last month’s cost-of-living protests.

Speaking from the UK, Mr Wynne told Nigeria’s Channels Television he was not aware of accusations and would be happy to talk to officials. Read more 

Turkey arrests 15 accused of assaulting US servicemen (VOA)

A nationalist Turkish youth group physically assaulted two U.S. soldiers Monday in western Turkey, the U.S. Embassy in Turkey and the local governor’s office said, adding that 15 assailants had been detained over the incident.

In a statement, the Izmir governor’s office said members of the Turkey Youth Union (TGB), a youth branch of the nationalist opposition Vatan Party, “physically attacked” two U.S. soldiers dressed in civilian clothes in the Konak district.

It added that five U.S. soldiers joined in after seeing the incident, and that police intervened. All 15 attackers had been detained and an investigation was launched into the matter, it said. Read more

Chelsea have sold Brazilian winger Angelo Gabriel, who never made a competitive appearance for the club, to Saudi Arabia for a £6 million profit.

The Premier League side paid around £13 million to sign Angelo from Santos in July 2023 and then loaned him to Strasbourg, the French club which was bought by Chelsea’s owners last year.

Angelo went on to make 24 appearances for Strasbourg in all competitions last season but failed to score a single goal for the French side. Read more

Netherlands manager Ronald Koeman has excluded Steven Bergwijn from the Dutch national team following the winger’s move from Ajax to Al-Ittihad.

Olympic marathon runner hospitalised after “boyfriend set her on fire in petrol attack’’ (Express)

Paris Olympics competitor Rebecca Cheptegei is in hospital after being set on fire by her boyfriend, according to police. The Ugandan, who lives in Kenya, sustained burns on 75 per cent of her body following Sunday’s terrifying attack.

Cheptegei was covered in petrol and set ablaze at her house in the western part of Trans Nzoia County, according to a report from the area’s Police Commander, Jeremiah ole Kosiom.

The 33-year-old’s boyfriend is said to have carried out the attack due to a disagreement. The police chief’s report states that they were heard arguing over the land on which Cheptegei’s house sits before he left and returned with a jerrican of petrol. Read more
