The Lagos State Police Command has arrested an online blogger, Stanley Okoruwa for allegedly defaming international businessman, Emeka Okonkwo, popularly known as E Money .

The suspect ,who was paraded before newsmen on Monday at State Command headquarters, Ikeja, confessed to the crime and claimed to have used the offending video to boost his followership online Stanley in the said video had accused the businessman of having illicit affairs with the wife of the late Nollywood star ,John Odonwodo, aka Junior Pope’s wife .

He also accused the businessman of being responsible for the death of the late Nollywood star ,who died in a boat accident . Read more

Sanwo-Olu faults AGF for including Lagos in LG autonomy suit (DailyTrust)

The Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, says the state is fully complying with the Local Government autonomy already and as such shouldn’t be dragged to court alongside 35 other states.

The federal government had filed a suit at the Supreme Court against the 36 state governors over the LG autonomy.

In a suit marked SC/CV/343/2024, the federal government, through attorney-general of the federation (AGF) Lateef Fagbemi, urged the apex court to issue an order, prohibiting state governors from arbitrary and unlawful dissolution of democratically elected local government leaders. Read more 

Lagos set to generate power from solid waste, signs deal with Dutch firm (ThisDay)

Lagos State has taken a major step towards turning tonnes of solid waste generated in the metropolis to usable energy.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, yesterday, formalised a partnership with a Dutch firm, Harvest Waste Consortium, for the construction of a high efficiency Waste-to-Energy plant on Epe landfill, which will utilise advanced technology to generate clean energy from municipal solid waste, commercial and industrial waste.

The innovative waste management solution is expected to take some 40,000 homes off the national electricity grid, as the technology would enhance energy security and diversification, generating between 60 and 75 megawatts of baseload electricity annually. Read more 

SDP candidate Ajaka rejects Kogi Gov tribunal ruling (Nation)

The gubernatorial of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Kogi State, Alhaji Murtala Yakubu Ajaka has said his loss at the tribunal to Governor Usman Ododo is a temporary setback, declaring he is prepared to pursue the case to the highest court.

Ajaka, who was reacting to the verdict of the Kogi State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal, which dismissed his petition against Governor Ododo, said in a statement that: “A long walk to freedom has just begun”

Imo: Police demote officer caught extorting motorists in viral video (Tribune)

The Imo State Command of the Nigeria Police has confirmed the rank demotion of one of its officers caught extorting money from motorists along the Owerri-Onitsha express road.

The officer, identified as Inspector Isong Osudueh, was captured in a viral video collecting money from drivers on the busy road and, in some cases, handing them change.

The officer’s extortion video, attached to the Counter Terrorism Unit (CTU), has continued to generate criticism from social media users, with many condemning the act in its entirety. Read more

17-year-old Nigerian offered full scholarships to study software engineering (Punch)

A 17-year-old student, Emmanuela Ilok, has reportedly been awarded full scholarships to study Software Engineering by some of the world’s prestigious universities, including Stanford, MIT, Yale, UPenn, Princeton, and Columbia.

Education activist and CEO of Educare, Alex Onyia, shared Ilok’s accomplishments in a post on his X page on Sunday.

“This is Emmanuela Ilok, the brilliant 17-year-old who received full scholarships to study Software Engineering at Stanford, MIT, Yale, UPenn, Princeton, and Columbia University,” Onyia wrote. Read more

Police arrests 4 soldiers, 1 NSCDC agent over trailer hijacking in Rivers (Vanguard)

In a breakthrough operation, the Rivers State Police Command has arrested four serving personnel of the Nigerian Army and one personnel of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) for their involvement in trailer hijacking and goods diversion.

The suspects, identified as West Isaac, Abdul Musa, Mgbe Geoffrey, Innocent Okwoli (soldiers), and Jabila Kammangar (NSCDC agent), were arrested on May 25, 2024, following a tip-off from a reliable source.

According to the police investigation, the suspects were part of a larger criminal syndicate specializing in armed robbery, hijacking, and goods diversion. They had been terrorizing the Rivers State axis, hijacking trailers and diverting goods worth millions of naira. Read more

Ekiti to launch education for out-of-school girls (Nation)

Ekiti State government will launch the second chance education programme to assimilate out-of-school girls and adolescents between the ages of 10 and 20 into the formal school system.

Commissioner for Information Taiwo Olatunbosun said this in Ado-Ekiti after an assessment tour of the World Bank-assisted Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning Projects across the state.

Olatunbosun said the programme, tagged ‘Ekiti State Girls’ Finishing School’, would begin in September to give girls who dropped out due to financial difficulties, unplanned pregnancies, GBV, among others, another opportunity to complete school. Read more

Rancher and 34 cows he was feeding struck dead by lightning (Metro)

A Colorado rancher feeding his cattle was struck to death by lightning along with 34 of his cows.

Mike Morgan, 51, was giving his animals food from a trailer when the bolt hit him around 2pm on Saturday, said the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office.

Bystanders and first responders performed life-saving measures on Morgan but he was pronounced dead at the scene. Read more

The southern Gazan city of Rafah has become “hell on Earth”, the head of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees has said.

According to the Hamas-controlled health ministry, at least 45 people were killed in a tent camp after an Israeli airstrike on Sunday, described by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as a “tragic mistake”.

Shooting between Egyptian, Israeli personnel near Rafah kills 1 Egyptian (AlJazeera)

The “competent authorities” are investigating the death of a member of an Egyptian security team in a shooting near the Rafah border zone, Egypt’s military spokesperson says.

Earlier on Monday, Israel’s military said it was also investigating reports of an exchange of fire between Israeli and Egyptian soldiers near the crossing between Egypt and the besieged Gaza Strip.

Mike Tyson is ‘doing great’ after health scare on flight (NBC)

Former heavyweight champ Mike Tyson suffered a medical scare while on a flight from Miami to Los Angeles on Sunday and had to be tended to by paramedics, his representatives said.

They said in a statement that the 57-year-old boxer is now doing well.
