Police arrest domestic staff for murder (Nation)

A former domestic staff, Monday Odey, who fled after hitting his colleague to death in Magodo, Lagos Mainland, has been arrested, the police said yesterday. Odey was arrested one month after killing Abdullahi Yinusa with a shovel for reporting his stealing habit to their employer. The Nation had reported the incident which occurred on April 5, at 16, Tunde Obitayo Street, Magodo Phase Two, after the police declared Odey wanted. It was gathered that Odey’s stealing habit led to his being sacked and he blamed Yinusa for his disengagement.

Confirming his arrest in a statement on Saturday, Police spokesman,  Bala Elkana, a Deputy Superintendent (DSP) said the murder was reported at the police by one Bola Ikupoluyi on the day it occurred. Read more

Prices of tomato, pepper increase by 60% in Lagos ahead of Ramadan (Vanguard)

Ahead of Ramadan, prices of tomato and pepper have soared by 60 per cent in some markets in Lagos, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.

A NAN survey conducted at Mile 12, Oke Odo, Oyingbo and Iddo markets, Lagos, reveals that a 40 kilogramme (kg) basket of tomato, which cost N5,000 two weeks ago has risen to N12,000. Read more

The Catholic Archbishop of Abuja, His Eminence John Cardinal Onaiyekan yesterday expressed fear over the rate at which people are kidnapped and killed along Abuja/Kaduna expressed way.

With the development, Onaiyekan said something is defiantly wrong with the country’s security architecture.

Gunmen kill Bafarawa’s guard, kidnap nephew (Nation)

Gunmen on Friday night stormed the country home of former Governor of Sokoto State, Alhaji Attahiru Bafarawa at Bafarawa in Isa local Government Area of the state, killing   his security guard.

The victim’s name was given as Abdullahi Jijji.

Bafarawa’s nephew, Abdulrasheed Sa’idu,16, who was at the house during the attack was also abducted by the bandits. Read more

Kano records 1,125 rape, sexual assault cases in three months (Guardian)

The upsurge of sexual assault has reached an alarming rate in Kano, as WARAKA-SARC recorded 1,125 cases in three months.

A data released by the referral centre for technical assistance to victims of sexual assault in the state read: “There were 90 reported cases in February, 58 cases in March and 77 recorded in April, 2019…” Read more

The Nigerian Army headquarters in Abuja has raised the alarm over plans by some foreign interests and groups within the country to scuttle the May 29 handing over date and hinder the nation’s democratic process.

Acting Director Army Public Relations, Colonel Saghir Musa, who raised the alarm said the “mischievous elements” had thought that the just-concluded 2019 general elections would not have been successful, but they were proved wrong by the Nigerian people who turned out in their large numbers to elect their leaders. Another Nigerian stabbed to death in South Africa (Tribune)

President Nigerian Citizens Association South Africa (NICASA), Ben Okoli, says a Nigerian, Mr Okechukwu Henry, from Imo State, was stabbed to death by unknown South African robbers.

The NICASA president said this in a letter to the Consul-General, Nigerian Consulate Johannesburg, South Africa.

A copy of the letter was obtained by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday in Abuja.

Okoli said that the association was tired of sending Nigerians back home in body bags due to the premeditated and organised crime against them in South Africa. Read more
