Police arrest man for allegedly killing poly student for ritual (Punch)

It’s sunset at dawn for 20-year-old Toluwalase Kembi, a polytechnic student awaiting industrial training.

A visit to her friend in the Ikorodu area sadly led to her death allegedly by boyfriend who claimed he was paid N2m to carry out the act.

The 33-year-old suspect, Owolabi Yusuf also known as alfa, is now cooling his heels in the custody of the Elere Police Division in the Agege area, where the matter was reported to.

Our correspondent gathered that the victim, who lived with her parents on Orile Road, TabonTabon, Agege, had gone to sleep over in Yusuf’s place in the Ladeja area of Ikorodu, on July 28, when she was allegedly clubbed to death and her body reportedly cut into pieces for ritual purposes. Read more

Provide morgage for Lagos residents, Sanwo-Olu tells LBIC (Guardian)

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu has tasked the Lagos State Building Investment Company (LBIC), to unlock its assets and avail Lagosians mortgages at competitive rates.

Sanwo-Olu said this when Chairman of LBIC, Mr. Hakeem Ogunniran, board members and management of the company paid a courtesy visit to the governor.

He, therefore, called for stronger collaboration between the Lagos State Government and LBIC to open more opportunities for residents to acquire homes through mortgage schemes.

In a statement, Ogunniran said the board and management of the leading mortgage company are determined to collaborate with the current administration to reduce housing deficits in the state. Read more

Environmental advocates call for total ban of plastics (Vanguard)

Some environmental advocates have called on the Federal and State Governments to find alternative and innovative ways of ridding the environment of plastic wastes.

The advocates made the call during a clean up exercise at the Bonny Cantonment, Victoria Island on Saturday in Lagos.

The exercise was carried out to commemorate the International Coastal Clean up Day marked annually on every third Saturday in the month of September.

One of the advocates, Dr Leslie Adogame, Executive Director, Sustainable Research and Action for Environmental Development, a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), called for the ban of single-use plastics in the country. Read more

Violence: Edo poll proves pundits wrong (Punch)

Against nationwide apprehension that Saturday’s governorship election in Edo State would be marred by large scale violence, the election held peacefully in most parts of the state, save for disruptions recorded in few Local Government Areas.

Our correspondents who monitored the poll in different parts of the state observed that voting was conducted in a peaceful manner as security agents kept guard at the different polling units.

The fear of violence during and after the election had prompted the Oba of Benin, Ewuare II, to summon the candidates of the All Progressives Congress, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu and the Peoples Democratic Party, Godwin Obaseki to his palace, over their hot verbal exchanges, clashes among their supporters and pockets of violence that had characterised their campaigns. Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has restated the Federal Government’s determination to boost the nation’s technology sector and digital economy.

Prof. Osinbajo stated this on Friday during a fireside chat with Facebook’s Vice President on Global Affairs and Communications, former UK Deputy Prime Minister, Sir Nick Clegg. The chat focused on the digital economic pillar of the Nigerian Economic Sustainability Plan, NESP.

Police in Anambra arrest 3 suspects for alleged abduction, rape of job seeker (Vanguard)

The Police Command in Anambra has arrested three suspects, who allegedly abducted and raped a  24-year-old woman under the pretext of securing a job for her.

The command’s Spokesman, SP Haruna Mohammed, disclosed this in a statement in Awka on Saturday.

Mohammed said the suspects allegedly raped the victim repeatedly while in their custody, in spite of collecting N400,000 ransom from her relatives.

He identified the suspects as Ekwugha Chinazo, 25; Chidiebere Ogoegbunam, 24; and David Nnaemeka,19. Read more

Petrol supply fell by 23.88% in July, says NNPC (Punch)

The volume of petrol supplied in the country declined by 23.88 per cent in July to 1.02 billion litres, according to the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation.

The NNPC said the 1.02 billion litres translated to 32.95 million litres per day, down from 44.62 million litres per day in June, when 1.34 billion litres were supplied.

Data obtained from the corporation showed that 0.95 billion litres (30.67 million litres/day) were supplied in May and 0.94 billion litres (31.37 million litres/day) in April. Read more

Edo election: Why collation is delayed – INEC (Guardian)

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says that delay in the receipt of collated results of the governorship election from local government areas in Edo has delayed the collation at the state level.

INEC National Commissioner May Agbamuche-Mbu announced this on Sunday in Benin.

Agbamuche-Mbu, INEC commissioner incharge of Edo, Bayelsa and Rivers, is the commissioner overseeing the Edo election.

Addressing newsmen and party agents at the state collation centre, INEC headquarters, Benin, she said that results were still being expected from the 18 local government areas of the state. Read more

Enugu State government, represented by the Deputy Governor, Madam Cecelia Ezelio has expressed appreciation to the management of Ibom Air for adding Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu to their routes.

This is just as the Chief Operating Officer of Ibom Air, Mr George Uriesi said the airline operates the right aircraft type that will make the newly introduced Enugu route profitable to operate.

Belarus police detain hundreds at women’s protest (Aljazeera)

Riot police detained hundreds of women as opposition protesters marched through the Belarusian capital Minsk demanding an end to President Alexander Lukashenko’s rule.

Approximately 2,000 women took part in the “Sparkly March” on Saturday, wearing shiny accessories and carrying red-and-white flags of the protest movement.

Police blocked the women and began dragging them into police vans as they stood with linked hands, swiftly detaining several hundred, an AFP journalist saw. Read more

John Turner: Former Canadian prime minister dies at 91 (BBC)

Former Canadian Prime Minister John Turner, who was in office for just 79 days and led his Liberal Party to a huge defeat in 1984, has died aged 91.

A lawyer by training, he served as justice and then finance minister from 1968-1975. He resigned after arguments with party leader Pierre Trudeau.

Turner resumed his legal work and nine years later won the party leadership. Read more

Ricin: Letter containing poison addressed to Trump at White House (BBC)

A package containing ricin poison that was addressed to US President Donald Trump has been intercepted before it reached the White House, officials told US media.

The letter was discovered at a screening facility for White House mail earlier this week, the officials said.

They said a substance found inside the envelope was identified as ricin, a poison found naturally in castor beans. Read more
