Police confirm Naira Marley, Sam Larry’s assault on MohBad (Vanguard)

The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed that there are ample evidences that Nigerian singer, Naira Marley and socialite, Balogun Olamilekan Eletu aka Sam Larry assaulted late singer Mohbad, while the deceased was alive.

Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Idowu Owohunwa, made the disclosure on Friday, while giving an update into the ongoing investigation of Mohbad.

He said, ”While Abdulazeez Fashola (Naira Marley) and Samson Balogun Eletu (Sam Larry) denied allegations of criminal liability in the death of Mohbad and pleaded an alibi to justify their not being complicit in the incidents that occurred from 10th to 12th September, 2023, there are ample electronic and credible witnesses’ evidence linking them to cyberbullying, threat to life, assault occasioning harm and conduct likely to cause breach of peace against the deceased in his lifetime following their roles in the incidents that occurred at The Chandelier Club and Elegushi Beach in June, 2023 as well as the alleged assault on Mohbad in October, 2022 around the residence of Naira Marley at Lekki.” Read more 

Customs intercepts 20 containers of expired tomatoes at Tin-Can Ports (Tribune)

The acting Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, on Friday, announced the Service Interception of 20 containers loaded with expired tomato concentrate at Tin-Can Island port, Lagos.

The Customs boss while displaying the seizure, said the concentrate was seized by the Port and Terminal Multiservice Limited (PTML), command of the service on the 8th of August 2023. 

The acting Customs CG revealed that the container numbers used to import the expired concentrate are as follows: ACLU 2790243, GCNU 1275582, GCNU 1303278, GCNU 1336137, GCNU 1361905, GCNU 1316824, GCNU 1323314, GCNU 1324727, GCNU 1326210, SEGU 3388813. Read more 

Tribunal dismisses PDP’s petition, upholds Otti’s election (Channels)

The Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal sitting in Umuahia, Abia State, has dismissed the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)’s petition against the election of Governor Alex Otti for lacking merit.

The court also confirmed Otti as the duly elected governor of Abia State.

The tribunal, which dismissed the petition brought by Ambrose Ahaiwe and the PDP challenging the outcome of the March 18, 2023 poll, on Friday, was led by Justice H.T.D. Gwadah. Read more 

Court sentences Mike Ozekhome’s kidnappers to 20-year imprisonment (Nation)

A Federal High Court (FHC), Abuja, on Friday, convicted and sentenced two of the four defendants alleged to have kidnapped Chief Mike Ozekhome, SAN, to a 20-year-jail term each.

Justice Binta Nyako, in a judgment, held that the prosecution had been able to establish the counts preferred against Kelvin Ezeigbe and Frank Azuekor, who were 1st and 2nd defendants, beyond reasonable doubt.

Justice Nyako held that the sentence would run from the day of their arrest. Read more

Police recover car stolen from Anambra in Lagos (Punch)

Men of the Zone 2 Police Command, Lagos have arrested a suspect, Ugomsinachi Maxwell, who allegedly belongs to a gang that specialises in snatching cars at gunpoint.

He was said to have been arrested in Lagos while trying to sell a car he snatched in Anambra State.

The Zonal Police Public Relations Officer, Hauwa Adamu, disclosed this in a statement made available to journalists on Thursday. Read more

Communal Clash: Osun imposes 24-hour curfew on 2 LGAs (Guardian)

The Osun Government has imposed a 24-hour curfew on Ifon and Ilobu, in Orolu and Irepodun Local Government Areas of the state, respectively, over ongoing communal clashes in the area.

This is contained in a statement in Osogbo on Friday by Mr Kolapo Alimi, the state’s commissioner for information and public enlightenment.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that both communities in the two local government areas have been clashing over a parcel of land. Read more

Groups fault INEC on manual transmission of Bayelsa guber results (Vanguard)

A Coalition of Pro-democracy Organisations in Nigeria, has faulted the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)’s plans to transmit the results of the Nov.11 Bayelsa governorship election manually.

The group said this in a statement jointly signed by Mr Olufemi Lawson, the National Secretary, Campaign for Democracy (CD) and Mr Atani John, the Niger Delta Democratic Vanguard in Lagos on Friday.

The Coalition of Pro-democracy Organisations in Nigeria is an amalgamation of groups committed to ensuring transparency, fairness, and accountability in the electoral process.

The coalition said that it took the decision to challenge INEC plans after a stakeholders meeting in Abuja on Thursday. Read more

The Nigeria Centre for Reading, Research and Development (NCRRD) of Bayero University, Kano, along with other stakeholders in the early-grade education sector, has proffered solutions to address the declining reading culture in the country, especially among early grades.

Speaking during the 4th National Conference on Children’s Books and the Teaching of Early Grade Reading in Nigeria organised by the NCRRD in Kano, on Thursday, the stakeholders regretted the increasing negative impact of poor reading culture and its effect on the academic performance of school children, while seeking urgent attention of concern authorities for holistic change.

The director, NCRRD, Professor Talatu Garba, explained that the theme of the conference “Innovative Methodologies for Research and the Teaching of Early Grade Reading in Nigeria” was conceived to proffer solutions to the declining reading culture, especially in early childhood. Read more

British prime minister says traditional understanding of gender is “common sense” (CNA)

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak asserted on Wednesday that the fact that “a man is a man and a woman is a woman” is “common sense.”

Sunak, who assumed office last October and is leader of the Conservative (Tory) Party, made the comments during a speech at his party’s annual gathering in Manchester, England, October 4.

“[W]e shouldn’t get bullied into believing that people can be any sex they want to be. They can’t. A man is a man and a woman is a woman — that’s just common sense,” Sunak said as reported by the Washington Post.  Read more 

Japanese anime ‘‘The Concierge’’ set for North America theatrical release via Crunchyroll (THR)

Anime specialty company Crunchyroll revealed Thursday that it has acquired all North American rights to the upcoming Japanese animated feature “The Concierge”. The company, a subsidiary of Sony, plans to release the film in North American theaters early next year.

The film is a feature adaptation of Tsuchika Nishimura’s beloved manga series “The Concierge at Hokkyoku Department Store”, which follows Akino, a trainee concierge, who works at a special store where the customers are all animals and the most valued among them are extinct species.

Directed by Yoshimi Itazu from the fabled production company Production I.G (Ghost in the Shell, Psycho-Pass, Haikyuu!), The Concierge made its world premiere to positive reviews this past June at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival and its North American premiere at the Fantasia International Film Festival. It will get its Japan release by Aniplex on Oct. 20. Read more 

Oscars: Ireland submits documentary ‘‘In The Shadow Of Beirut’’ for International Feature race (Deadline)

Stephen Gerard Kelly and Garry Keane’s documentary In The Shadow of Beirut has been submitted as Ireland‘s entry for the 2024 Oscar International Feature Film race.

The film, which is executive produced by Hillary Clinton, Chelsea Clinton and Siobhan Sinnerton of HiddenLight Productions, was selected Thursday by the Irish Film & Television Academy, which last year selected The Quiet Girl for its submission. That film, directed by Colm Bairéad, became the first Irish film to be nominated in the category.

For “The Shadow of Beirut”, first-time filmmaker Kelly spent five years living among the film’s four featured families in the Sabra and Shatila neighborhoods outside Beirut as it became engulfed in economic and political crisis following a 1882 massacre there. The film’s dialogue is primarily in Arabic. Read more

Keith Jefferson, an actor who appeared in a plethora of Quentin Tarantino films, most notably Django Unchained, Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood and The Hateful Eight has died.

The Houston, Texas native, who was battling cancer, was 53.

At least 100 killed as Syrian military college hit in drone attack (AlJazeera)

A drone attack on a military college in Syria’s Homs province during a graduation ceremony has killed at least 100 people and wounded 240 more, a war monitor and the Syrian health minister have said.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said more than 100 people were killed and 125 injured. An official in the alliance backing Syria’s government said the toll was about 100.

Health Minister Hassan Al-Ghabash gave a lower figure, telling state television 80 people had been killed, including six children, but that about 240 people had been injured. There were concerns the death toll could rise further as many of the wounded were in serious condition. Read more

Juventus and France midfielder Paul Pogba’s ‘B’ sample has confirmed the presence of testosterone, a source close to the case told AFP on Friday.

Paris Saint-Germain players Randal Kolo Muani, Ousmane Dembele, Achraf Hakimi and Layvin Kurzawa have been handed one-match suspensions for their role in anti-gay chants, the Ligue de Football Professionnel (IFL) said on Thursday.

During last month’s Ligue 1 match against Marseille at the Parc des Princes, PSG fans were heard celebrating with anti-gay chants directed at Marseille, and reports said PSG players were also involved.
