Police confirm Taraba attack, mum on gov’s family involvement

The Police on Friday morning confirmed the attack on Wukari -Kente road allegedly involving the family of Governor Agbu Kefas on Thursday.

Social media had on Thursday evening reported that gunmen attacked the mother and sister of Taraba State Governor, Agbu Kefas, along Kente Road in Wukari Local Government Area.

According to the report, the Chairman of Wukari Local Government, Dauda Samaila Agbu, had earlier disclosed that the Governor’s sister, Atsi Kefas, sustained gunshot injuries and was initially treated at the Federal Teaching Hospital in Wukari and before being flown to Abuja via helicopter for advanced medical care.

But in a swift reaction, a top government official in a WhatsApp post dismissed the social media post.

“The report of attack on the Governor’s mother and sister on the Wukari-Kente road is fake news,” the government official said in a WhatsApp group post on Thursday evening.

But, speaking with journalists in Jalingo on Friday morning, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abdullahi Usman, confirmed that a robbery attack occurred on the road but did not verify whether the Governor’s mother, Jumai Kefas, and sister were among the victims.

Usman said investigations into the incident were ongoing, and the perpetrators of the robbery would be brought to justice.

“Yes, we received a report of a robbery attack on Wukari -Kente road in the early hours of yesterday, but I can’t confirm whether the Governor’s mother and sister were among the victims.
“The said incident is being investigated and hopefully the perpetrators of the act will be brought to book. The people of Taraba should remain calm, as the police and other sister agencies are on top of the security situation in the state,” he said. (Punch)
