Ahmed Aminu, was 23 years old when his father and stepmother decided to cage him in an unused garage like an animal. For seven years, lived in the small space and in solitary confinement.

Gone was his freedom. Freedom to eat, play and work as he might desire.

He had no idea of what went around him even though what served as his shelter was located right there in his father’s  home, located at Farawa Baban Layi Mariri quarters, Kumbotso local government area – a suburb of Kano metropolis.

Lagos compensates victims of Badagry rainstorm with cash (Guardian)

Lagos State government has put smile on the faces of victims of the rainstorm that occurred in Badagry, when it gave cash support to those who suffered losses.

Those compensated were grouped into three, with those whose buildings were severely damaged getting N500,000, while those who suffered moderate and mild damages got N400,000 and N200,000 respectively. The four communities affected by the rainstorm are Iragon-thogli, Iragbo, Iragan-Igboiji and Kemu.

The Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, represented by the Special Adviser, Culture, Mr. Solomon Bona, presented cash support to those whose buildings were damaged by the rainstorm. Read more

Lagos-Ibadan Rail to begin operations with 16 trips daily – NRC (Vanguard)

The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) says it will commence skeletal operations on the Lagos-Ibadan Standard Guage Rail line from the middle of September with 16 trips daily. The Managing Director of NRC, Mr Fidet Okhiria disclosed this on Saturday in Ibadan during an inspection tour of the project by the Ministers of Transportation, Mr Rotimi Amaechi, and Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai  Mohammed.

Okhiria said that since the track laying had been completed between Ebute-Metta Junction (EBJ) in Lagos and Ibadan with stations under construction, the operation would start between Yaba in Lagos and Ibadan. Read more

UNILAG crisis: Tension as Babalakin, ASUU draw battle line (Nation)

Tension remained high in the air at the University of Lagos yesterday after the institution’s chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) vowed that there was no going back in its rejection of the removal of the university’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Oluwatoyin Ogundipe.

The chairman of the UNILAG Governing Council, Dr.Wale Babalakin, also stuck to his gun that Ogundipe was gone for good and that due process was followed in his removal.

The Academic Staff Union has strong backers in the Committee of Vice Chancellors of Universities (CVC) and the institution’s senate representatives on the Governing Council, Prof. Afolabi Lesi, both of whom faulted the process that led to Ogundipe’s sack. Read more

Pastor, five others nabbed for alleged child trafficking in Akwa Ibom (Punch)

The police in Akwa Ibom State have arrested a 39-year-old female pastor, Mrs Mnayen Odiuotip, and five others for alleged child theft and trafficking in the state.

Odiuotip, a pastor of a church on Marina Road, Oron Local Government Area of the state, was apprehended along with her accomplices while the baby was rescued from them.

A statement on Saturday, by the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Nnudam Fredrick, said the suspects were arrested based on intelligence reports. Read more

The Department of State Services, DSS, on Saturday, invited former Speaker, House of Representatives, Ghali Umar Na’abba, for a Monday appointment.

The DSS invitation was the subject of a statement by National Consultative Front, NCFront, Na’abba’s new political group; signed by its Head, Public Affairs Bureau, Dr. Tanko Yunusa.

Enugu lady raped to death buried 18 months after (Punch)

A 20-year-old lady, Ngozi Eze, who was allegedly raped to death by unidentified persons at Imufu community, Enugu Ezike in Enugu State, has been buried 18 months after her death.

She was buried on Friday in her father’s compound at Orukpa Imufu after a Requiem Mass was offered for the repose of her soul at the St. Joseph Catholic Church.

The body of the late Ngozi, which was brought in a motorcade to the church, was accompanied by hundreds of youths in the community clad in black attire and singing sorrowful songs to mourn her demise. Read more

Nollywood actress, Omotola Jalade Ekeinde has tested positive for the novel coronavirus.

The superstar actress also known as Omosexy, disclosed this on Saturday via her verified Instagram page where she told her fans that though she is getting better, she is still in isolation.

She wrote:  “Hello all, I know most of you have been wondering where I’ve been.

“Well, I contracted COVID. I have been ill, in Isolation and now getting better.”

Ship leaking tonnes of oil off Mauritius splits apart (Aljazeera)

A grounded Japanese-owned ship that leaked tonnes of oil near protected areas off the Indian Ocean island nation of Mauritius has split apart, with remaining fuel spreading into the turquoise waters.

The bulk carrier struck a coral reef off Mauritius on July 25 and its hull began to crack after days of pounding waves. Some 1,000 tonnes of fuel began to leak on August 6, threatening a protected marine park boasting mangrove forests and endangered species.

On Sunday, photos posted on social media by the official clean-up showed the MV Wakashio in two pieces. Oil barriers were in place and a skimmer ship was nearby. Read more

Robert Trump: President’s younger brother dies in hospital (BBC)

Robert Trump, the younger brother of the US president, has died aged 72, the White House has confirmed.

“He was not just my brother, he was my best friend,” Donald Trump said in a statement on Saturday.

The president had visited his brother in hospital in New York on Friday afternoon, telling reporters: “He’s having a hard time.”

US media reports had said Robert Trump was seriously ill, but it is unclear what illness he was suffering from. Read more

Jurassic World: Dominion bosses spend $9million on coronavirus precautions for filming (Metro)

Jurassic Park: Dominion was among the many films which had to stop production amid the coronavirus pandemic, but bosses are taking meticulous precautions to get it up and running again. 

The New York Times reports that bosses have spent $9million (£6.9million) on precautions including a 107-page safety manual, 18,000 coronavirus tests for the cast and crew and 150 hand sanitiser stations.  Part of the cost includes hiring out an entire hotel for 20 weeks for the cast and crew, which the director Colin Trevorrow thought was a ‘bananas idea’, but told the paper: ‘For Laura Dern, Sam Neill, Jeff Goldblum and all our actors, they were very cautious. Newsweek apologises for op-ed on Kamala Harris’ citizenship (Aljazeera)

The United States-based news magazine, Newsweek, has apologised for an op-ed that questioned Senator Kamala Harris’ citizenship and her eligibility to be Joe Biden’s running mate, a false and racist conspiracy theory which President Donald Trump has not dismissed.

“This op-ed is being used by some as a tool to perpetuate racism and xenophobia. We apologize,” read Newsweek editor’s note on Friday, which replaced the magazine’s earlier detailed defence of the op-ed.

“We entirely failed to anticipate the ways in which the essay would be interpreted, distorted and weaponized,” read the apology, signed by Josh Hammer, opinion editor, and Nancy Cooper, global editor in chief.

But they ended the note by saying that the op-ed would remain on the site, with their note attached. Read more

Angola orders Brazil evangelical churches to close (BBC)

Prosecutors in Angola have ordered the closure of places of worship belonging to one of Brazil’s biggest churches, accusing it of corruption.

At least seven buildings belonging to the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God (UCKG) have been seized in the capital, Luanda.

Prosecutors said the evangelical church had been involved in tax fraud and other fiscal crimes.

UCKG officials have previously strongly denied any wrongdoing. Read more

Canadian-born actor and comedian Seth Rogen tweeted Saturday that the people of British Columbia should “hang out alone and smoke weed and watch movies and TV shows,” rather than going out to parties and barbecues, in an effort to stop the spread of COVID-19.

Last week, Premier John Horgan put out the call to Rogen and actor Ryan Reynolds, and on Friday, Reynolds answered, pleading with young people in B.C. to stop partying and protect “some of the coolest older people on Earth” — including his mom and David Suzuki — from COVID-19.

World No. 8 Belinda Bencic withdrew from the U.S. Open on Saturday, becoming the fifth of the top eight WTA players to pull out of the Grand Slam event in New York amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Bencic, 23, was a Grand Slam semifinalist for the first time in her career in last year’s event. She lost to eventual champion Bianca Andreescu of Canada.
