Police nab Lagos caregiver’s husband for allegedly molesting 3-year-old (Punch)

A man identified simply as Benjamin has been detained by the police in Lagos over alleged sexual harassment of a three-year-old girl under the care of his wife who runs a daycare centre in the Ikorodu area of the state.

It was learnt that the girl had always complained to her mother that one ‘daddy’ was fond of touching her buttock and chest but could not mention the person’s name.

City Round gathered that the mother became more curious when she noticed that her daughter was comfortable with boys sleeping on her during playtime.

A picture purportedly blew the lid off the matter recently when the girl was said to have recognised Benjamin and her mum and identified the former as the ‘daddy’ who had been molesting her. Read more

Court bars Chevron’s Chief Medical Director from evicting wife (Nation)

A Lagos State High Court has restrained Chevron Nigeria Limited Chief Medical Director (CMD), Dr. Rotimi Babalola, from evicting his wife, Mrs. Adediwura Adebukola Babalola, from their matrimonial home.

Justice Olukayode Ogunjobi specifically barred Babalola, his servants, privies, or workmen from entering, trespassing, or otherwise disturbing the possession of the building at N0. 8, Service Crescent, Cooperative Villa, Badore, Ajah, Lagos pending the hearing and determination of the Motion on Notice filed in the divorce petition filed by his wife.

The judge granted the order after hearing arguments canvassed by the petitioner’s counsel, Adeleke Agbola, who pleaded for accelerated grant of the injunction in view of Babalola’s alleged insistence to evict Adediwura from their matrimonial home.

The motion on notice was adjourned to September 20, when the Lagos State High Court will resume from its annual vacation. Read more

VC selection: LASU cancels PhD criteria for medical applicants (Punch)

The Lagos State University, Ojo, Lagos, has rescinded on its decision to make a PhD degree a criteria for Medical and Dental professionals who wishes to apply for the Vice-Chancellor position in the institution.

Recall that on July, 25, 28 and 30, 2021, LASU published three adverts in three newspapers and stated that possession of a postgraduate Medical Fellowship was an unacceptable qualification for candidates wishing to apply for a vacant position of VC in the school.

It was added in the advert that every candidate must possess a PhD and must have supervised such.

However, LASU again, in an advert titled, ‘Signed by the Registrar, Mr Emmanuel Fanu on August 13, 2021’ read, “Possession of a postgraduate Medical Fellowship is an acceptable qualification for candidates wishing to apply for a vacant position of VC, Lagos State University. Read more

Big Brother has banned Maria, Liquorose and Peace from the Head of House lounge.

This happened after the tasks of Friday.

Biggie had asked the housemates to gather at the arena and then instructed the deputy Head of House, Maria, to read the “Bed rules” from the rule book.

One of the rules says the Head of House lounge was prohibited to the housemates except the Head of house and his deputy except stated otherwise.

Air Force establishes centre for complaints against personnel (Guardian)

To enable those outside the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) have the opportunity to channel their complaints and grievances against the Service or its personnel to appropriate authorities, the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Oladayo Amao, has ordered the establishment of the Office of the Ombudsman.

The Office, which is also tasked with addressing complaints by NAF personnel, will serve as an independent instrument that will provide an objective and compassionate channel for seeking redress.

According to Air force spokesman, Air Commodore Edward Gabkwet, “in approving the establishment of the Office of the Ombudsman, the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Oladayo Amao, took cognisance of the need to provide an avenue for those outside the Service as well as NAF serving personnel to ventilate their grievances against the Service for immediate resolution.” Read more

Toddler dumped in Ondo gutter, hands, legs tied, rescued (Punch)

A Good Samaritan has rescued a three-year-old girl found inside a gutter at the University of Medical Sciences Teaching Hospital, Ondo State.

The little girl, who has been christened Esther, reportedly lost consciousness and almost died as she was tied in both hands and legs, put in a sack and dumped in a filthy gutter in the Ayeyemi area of Ondo town.

The Chief Medical Director of the UNIMEDTH, Dr Oluwole Ige, on Friday, said the toddler was brought to the hospital unconscious but was resuscitated by the team of medical workers in the hospital.

He said, “On July 9, 2021, a three-year-old abandoned girl was found, dumped in an erosion pathway at Ayeyemi, Ondo City and was brought to the UNIMED Teaching Hospital accident and emergency crash ward by a good Samaritan. Read more

President Muhammadu Buhari, yesterday, paid tribute to pioneer civil servant, great statesman and patriot, Alhaji Ahmed Joda, who died after a prolonged illness in his hometown, Yola, Adamawa State at the age of 91.

Former president Olusegun Obasanjo and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, also mourned the late elder statesman, describing him as an astute administrator and detribalised Nigerian.

The late Joda was the last surviving member of Governor Hassan Usman’s Northern Nigeria cabinet. Nicki Minaj and husband Kenneth Petty sued by sex assault victim (BBC)

Rapper Nicki Minaj and her husband, Kenneth Petty, are being sued by a woman he was convicted of attempting to rape in 1994.

The woman, now 43, has filed a lawsuit alleging that the couple harassed her to try to make her take back her claims, US media report.

Petty served four-and-a-half years in prison after pleading guilty to attempted rape of the then teenager.

Shia LaBeouf has landed a ‘comeback’ role amid allegations he subjected ex FKA twigs to ‘relentless abuse’ during their relationship.

The 35-year-old was sued last year by FKA twigs, who accused the actor of sexual battery, assault, and infliction of emotional distress.

Among the singer’s allegations were that LaBeouf threatened to crash a car unless she professed her love for him, allegedly threw her against a car at a gas station, and knowingly gave her a sexually transmitted disease.

Erdogan visits Turkish flood victims as death toll hits 38 (Guardian)

The death toll from Turkey’s flash floods soared to at least 38 on Friday as President Recep Tayyip Erdogan visited one of the hardest-hit cities to lead a prayer for the victims and pledge government help.

The devastation across Turkey’s northern Black Sea regions came just as the disaster-hit country was gaining control over hundreds of wildfires that killed eight people and destroyed swathes of forest along its scenic southern coast.

In a provisional toll, the government’s disaster agency AFAD reported that 32 people had died in Kastamonu province, along the Black Sea, and that six others had lost their lives in the neighbouring area of Sinop. Read more

Covid-19: Canada to require vaccination for all federal workers by autumn (BBC)

All civil servants in Canada must be vaccinated by the end of October or risk losing their jobs, the government has announced.

The mandate also applies to workers in federally regulated sectors, like rail.

Commercial air, cruise and interprovincial train passengers must also be vaccinated to travel.

Canada has one of the highest Covid vaccination rates in the world, with 81% of eligible people having received at least one dose. Read more

Focus on Africa as world junior athletes gather in Nairobi (Guardian)

After two weeks of glamour at the Tokyo Olympic Games, focus has shifted to Nairobi, Kenya, venue of the 2021 World Athletics U-20 Championships. It will run from August 17 to 22.

Over 1,300 athletes from 128 countries are expected to compete in the Championships, which had discovered many great stars for various nations.

Host country, Kenya, will field 44 athletes for the competition, just as Team Nigeria has named a 27- man list. India has 28 athletes, and Botswana is sending 18-member squad for the junior championships.

In Team Nigeria’s squad to Nairobi 2021 U20 Championship are three U.S.-based junior athletes. They are Favour Ofili (Louisiana), Best Erhire (Tennessee) and Udodi Onwuzurike (Michigan). Read more

James Rodriguez is one of five Everton players who are isolating because of coronavirus issues and will miss Saturday’s game against Southampton.

Raphael Varane will miss Manchester United’s opening Premier League game against Leeds on Saturday as the deal is not “100% done yet”.

United reached an agreement with Real Madrid for Varane on 27 July.

Terem Moffi scored his first goal of the season for Lorient who defeated Monaco 1-0 at the Stade du Moustoir on Friday.

The win was Lorient’s first of the season after their draw against Saint Etienne on matchday one.
