Police nab ‘most wanted’ serial rapist in Lagos (Guardian)

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a suspected ‘most wanted’ serial rapist at the Egbeda area of the metropolis.The suspect, Chuks Emmanuel, is currently being interrogated at the Area ‘F’ Police Command Headquarters, Ikeja for alleged rape and fraud. Emmanuel, according to a police source has been on the police wanted list for a long time until last week when a special squad deployed by the Area ‘F’ Commander, ACP Olasoji Akinbayo, traced him to a hotel.

According to the police, female victims had complained bitterly on how Emmanuel lured them to hotel rooms where he subjected them to all sorts of blackmails after sleeping with them. Emmanuel was alleged to have forced his victims to pay him some amount of money or risked their nude photographs exposed on the internet. Luck however, ran out on Emmanuel as the police used a female to set him up and he fell to the bait. Read more

Danger looms in water transportation in Apapa (Vanguard)

FLOWING from the backdrop of the stifled road transportation in Apapa area of Lagos, the waterway alternative is now under threat over unsafe and inadequate regulatory oversight.

The area had witnessed the introduction of barges and tug boats to move containers from the ports to different parts of Lagos through the waterways. They also move human passengers inwards and outwards of the Apapa area.

However, some barge operators are now exploiting the situation to overload barges, thereby jeopardising the safety of humans and goods on board. Already, the effect of these overloaded barges has begun to take its toll on crew members as there have been two incidents where some crew members reportedly lost their lives after their ships sank. Sanwo-Olu tasks religious bodies on tolerance (Guardian)

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has urged the religious bodies to continue to live in harmony and tolerate each other in the state as well in the country.

The governor stated this yesterday in his address at the celebration of 2019 International Day of Tolerance, which was organised by the Ministry of Home Affairs with the theme: “Enhancing Harmonious Relationship and Peace among Religious Bodies for better Socio-Economic Development in the state” held at Alausa, Lagos.

Sanwo-Olu, represented by wife of the Deputy Governor, Mrs. Oluremi Hamzat, said that the “programme was organised at a better time in a country where some people are still beating the drum of war over religions and tribes.” Read more

Ibrede celebrates cultural heritage in Lagos (Vanguard)

Ibrede community in Ndokwa East Local Government of Delta State, would hold its annual Ibrede Day next Saturday.

A statement by Messrs. Howard Daferede and Charles Ighogbefa said the event would take place the Basket Ball Court, Navy Barracks, behind Federal Government Press, Ajegunle, Apapa, Lagos. Activities lined up would commence at 12 noon.

The statement reads:”All sons and daughters of Ibrede community in Lagos and its environs shall converge as a one indivisible people with one language and tradition to celebrate her cultural heritage.

The police, on Wednesday, arraigned one Mr. Livingstone Okpezi in a Karshi Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja, over alleged cruelty to his child The defendant, who resides at Angwan Sarki Orozo, Abuja, pleaded not guilty to the one count charge.  Earlier, the prosecutor, Mohammed Lawal, told the court that the complainant, Nwabeke Ginika, who lives in Orozo, Abuja, reported the matter at the Karshi Police Station on Oct. 21. Printer in court for allegedly stealing laptops worth N1.5m (DailyTrust)

A printer, Hakeem Okeowo, on Wednesday appeared in a Grade I Area Court in Mpape, Abuja, for allegedly stealing nine laptops, worth N1. 5 million. The police are charging Okeowo, 41, who lives in Piwoyi Area of Abuja with criminal trespass and theft.

The prosecutor, Mr Stanley Nwaforaku, told the court that the defendant trespassed into Royal Family Academy, located in the premises of Family Worship Centre, Wuye District, Abuja, on different occasions and stole nine laptops valued at N1.5 million. He alleged that the defendant was caught in the act in a CCTV footage. Read more

FEC approves N200bn loan for Bank of Industry (DailyTrust)

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved the issuance of a Sovereign Guarantee of 500 million Euros (N200bn) from the Credit Suisse AG London Branch and a syndicate of international lenders as collateral for 500m Euro facility to the Bank of Industry (BoI). The Minister of State,  Budget and National Planning, Clement Agba, who spoke with State House Correspondents yesterday after the FEC meeting presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, said the loan was basically to finance major industrialization projects and micro-small and medium enterprises values chains in Nigeria for up to five years tenure at affordable rates. Impeachment inquiry: Trump directed Ukraine pressure – Sondland (BBC)

A top US diplomat has told an impeachment inquiry that he followed President Donald Trump’s orders to put pressure on Ukraine to investigate his Democratic rival Joe Biden.

Ambassador Gordon Sondland said the instruction came from Mr Trump’s personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani.

The inquiry is assessing if Mr Trump withheld military aid to Ukraine as a precondition. He denies any wrongdoing.

It is illegal in the US to seek foreign help to gain electoral advantage. Read more

Boyfriend chokes girlfriend to death in unique sex style (Vanguard)

The defence in the trial of a man accused of murdering British backpacker Grace Millane has begun its case in New Zealand.

According to The Telegraph, the defendant, a 27-year-old New Zealander who cannot be named for legal reasons, claims Grace died accidentally during sex at the end of a Tinder date in December last year.

Today the court was told that British backpacker Grace belonged to BDSM dating sites and allowed a former partner to choke her during sex. Read more

Google to restrict political adverts worldwide (BBC)

Google will no longer allow political campaigns to target advertising at people based on their supposed political leanings.

Campaigns will also be unable to match their own database of prospective voters against Google’s user base, to target individuals across platforms such as YouTube and Google search.

The policy will begin in the UK “within a week”, with other regions later.

Campaigns will still be able to target based on age, gender and location. Read more
