Police dismiss officer for illegal phone search, assault (Channels)

The police have dismissed an officer for disobeying an order related to the illegal search of phones and assaulting a civilian.

Corporal Opeyemi Kadiri, before his dismissal, was attached to Dolphin Divisional Headquarters, Lagos Police Command.

According to a statement signed by police spokesperson Olumuyiwa Adejobi, Kadiri’s “gross misconduct, disobedience to lawful order, and assault on a member of the public” was “captured in a viral video on August 3, 2022.

“The dismissed officer who, enlisted into the Force on 6th December, 2016, was caught searching a commuter’s phone by the road side contrary to the directives of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Usman Alkali Baba, psc(+), NPM, fdc, to that effect. Read more

4 students celebrating WASSCE at Lagos beach drown, 1 body recovered (Channels)

Four teenagers have drowned while swimming at Elegushi Beach, in the Lekki area of Lagos State.

Channels Television gathered that the unidentified victims were swimming in the water before tragedy struck on Tuesday.

The 10 children, aged between 14 and 15, were at the beach to celebrate the completion of their West African Senior School Examination. They were said to be pupils of the Kuramo Senior College, Lekki.

Social media influencer remanded over alleged N110m fraud (Punch)

The Lagos Special Offences Court, Ikeja, has remanded a social media influencer, Portia Emilia, in prison, over an alleged fraud of N110m.

Emilia was arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission alongside her company, Savanah Crest Investment Limited.

The defendants, who were arraigned before Justice Abike Fadipe, are facing six counts bordering on conspiracy, obtaining by false pretences and stealing.

The EFCC alleged that the offences were committed in 2018 in Lagos. Read more

Lagos housewife faults husband’s arrest on terrorism suspicion (Punch)

A housewife, Anuoluwapo Sanni, 26, has been traumatised after men of the Ijora Baida Police Station, Lagos State, arrested her husband, Gafar, on suspicion of terrorism.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, had in a tweet on Monday said Gafar was rescued from being lynched by an angry mob, which descended on him for dressing in a suspicious manner.

Hundeyin explained that Gafar, who claimed to be an electrician, was found with a bag containing three hammers, six screwdrivers, one pair of pliers, one chisel, five spanners, three rolls of black cellophane, cable wires, 20mm bending spring, a pair of black trousers, and a plastic box of clips.

However, the suspect’s wife, Anuoluwapo, who spoke to our correspondent on Tuesday, denied that her husband was a terrorist. Read more

Lagos mob attacks suspected terrorist, police urge caution (Punch)

The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a suspected terrorist, Sanni Gafar, in the Ijora Badia area of the state.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, in a post on Twitter on Monday, said Gafar, who was alleged to have dressed as a woman, was arrested after an angry mob attacked him on the suspicion that he was a terrorist.

He said policemen rescued him from being lynched, adding that the command had commenced investigation into the case.

Hundeyin wrote, “Around 11am, a mob descended on an alleged terrorist at Ijora Badia. The police arrived on time to save him from lynching. Preliminary investigation shows that the male suspect, who many alleged disguised as a woman, is Sanni Gafar, 29. Read more

Man dies in motel after meeting online lover (Punch)

A 55-year-old man, Abdulwaheed Lamidi, has lost his life while lodging with his girlfriend at the City International Motel, Council Bus-Stop, in the Ikotun area of Lagos State.

PUNCH Metro gathered that Lamidi and his 32-year-old lover met online and after a series of conversations, they agreed to engage in a romantic relationship.

The relationship was said to have blossomed as the lovers decided to meet physically.

Our correspondent learnt that the lady, on Saturday, travelled from her house in another state to meet Lamidi at the motel. Read more

Tenant sues landlord over poor facility, demands refund (Punch)

A tenant, Raheem Olabanji, has filed a letter of demand against his landlord, Johnny Rowuru, before the Yaba Magistrate’s Court over his refusal to refund his rent and commission fees paid for an office space in the Lekki area of Lagos State.

Olabanji’s counsel, Olusola Okuwobi, said his client paid N600,000 to the landlord and N140,000 to the agent as directed by the landlord.

However, Okuwobi said the landlord did not fix basic amenities in the office space, which made Olabanji decide to leave four months later.

The claimant therefore sought the refund of the N740,000. Read more

Money-seeking council officials block Lagos road, beat drivers (Punch)

A truck driver, Muhammad Adejumo, was on Saturday assaulted by some council officials who mounted a roadblock at the Isheri Roundabout in the Alimosho Local Government Area of Lagos State.

Adejumo said the men, who claimed to be collecting levies on behalf of the Egbe/Idimu council, hit him with a rod while trying to stop him from driving past them.

Our correspondent, who witnessed the incident around 11pm, observed as the men, numbering about 10, wielded sticks and demanded money from truck drivers plying both sides of the road.

While some of the truck drivers handed out cash to them, others sped past them. Read more

NDLEA uncovers 442 crystal meths at Lagos airport (Punch)

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has uncovered 442 parcels of Crystal Methamphetamine concealed in heads of smoked fishes packed in cartons for export to Dubai, United Arab Emirates through the SAHCO shed of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja Lagos.

The 11.90kg consignment was brought to the SAHCO export shed of the airport on Friday, 5th August by a freight agent, Adekunle Paul, 32, from Yagba West LGA, Kogi State.

In a statement by the anti-narcotics agency’s spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, the agency noted that Paul was promptly arrested upon the discovery that the seven cartons he presented for export contained parcels of the dangerous drug wrapped with foil paper and concealed in the heads of hundreds of smoked catfish.

The statement reads in part, “The next day, Saturday 6th August, another consignment containing 1.45kg cannabis concealed inside granulated melon and crayfish and packed among other food condiments going to Dubai, UAE was also intercepted by NDLEA operatives who arrested the freight agent, Ajisefini Lateef, that presented the cargo for export at the SAHCO shed. The 39-year-old agent is from Abeokuta West LGA, Ogun State.” Read more

Motorcyclist in court for allegedly beating up 2 police men (Guardian)

A 25- year-old man, Olumide Thompson, on Monday appeared before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court for allegedly assaulting two policemen while on duty.

The defendant, a motorcyclist, who resides in Kande Ayobo area, Lagos, is being tried for conspiracy, assault, and causing the breach of peace.

The Police Prosecutor, Insp Segun Oke, told the court that the offences were committed on June 1 at Badek, Ayobo Roundabout, Lagos.

Oke said that the defendant was riding his motorcycle along a one-way lane when he was intercepted by the police on patrol. Read more

Lagos police parade suspected car snatchers terrorising Iba-Igando-Egbeda area (Guardian)

Detectives of the Lagos State Police Command have paraded 26-year-old Victor Chibuike, aka Azaman, 33-year-old Kingsley Ndubuisi, aka Kango; 29-year-old Augustine James, aka Edo Boy and 33-year-old Lateef Babatunde, who were arrested in Igando area of the state.

Spokesperson for the Command, Benjamin Hundeyin, in a statement, yesterday, said the arrest followed the launch of an investigation into a report received on August 7 that a 2010 Lexus RX 350 Sports Utility Van (SUV), 2006 Toyota Camry saloon car, an iphone and other valuables were robbed at gunpoint.

Hundeyin said three locally made pistols, one locally made semi-automatic pistol and 12 live cartridges were recovered from the gang.

According to him, investigations revealed that the suspects were notorious for robbing their victims of their valuables and vehicles along the Iba-Igando-Egbeda area of Lagos State. Read more

Lagos police arrest 2 suspected cultists with firearms (Guardian)

Officers of Ajah division of the Lagos State Police Command have arrested two suspected cultists along Budo Specialist Hospital road, Ajah, Lagos. 

The suspects: Bada Bayo, 45 and Segun Ogundele, 45 were arrested after policemen on routine patrol flagged down their vehicle, an unregistered Mercedes saloon car for a search. 

The Command’s spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, said an English Beretta pistol with seven rounds of live ammunition was found in their possession after a search of their vehicle.

Hundeyin said the investigation revealed that the suspects are cultists. Read more
