Police sergeant dismissed over N98k extortion (Punch)

Lagos State Police Command has announced the dismissal of Sergeant Ekpo Shimuyere from the Sogunle Division for extorting N98,000 from a young man.

The Lagos State Police Command’s spokesperson, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, disclosed on Wednesday that Shimuyere was dismissed and disrobed by the Provost Department of the command for extorting N98,000 from a young man.

Shimuyere, it was reported, collected the young man’s phone and used a POS operator to transfer N98,000 out of the N100,000 in the young man’s bank account. Hundeyin stated that the policeman’s actions were against the ethics of the profession. Read more

Court remands man for defiling 13-year-old girl (Punch)

An Ikeja Magistrates’ Court sitting at Ogba, on Tuesday, remanded a man, Darlington Ezenwa, who allegedly defiled a 13-year-old girl pending legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecution.

Ezenwa was arraigned by the police on two counts of conspiracy and defilement.

The Magistrate, Mrs E. Kubeinje, did not take the defendant’s plea owing to the nature of the offence.

She ordered the police to duplicate the case file and send the same to the office of the Director of Public Prosecution for legal advice. Read more

Family, group demand justice for 24-year-old killed by police (Punch)

The family of 24-year-old man, Idris Bakare, who was allegedly killed by a police bullet on Sunday night are demanding justice.

PUNCH Metro gathered that some people were reportedly fighting on Oregun Road, Lagos, late hours on Sunday when a police patrol van arrived at the scene.

Idris, while returning to his house at No 4, Baale Street, Oregun, Ikeja area of Lagos, was hit by a policeman’s bullet on the thigh. Read more

Suspect arrested for raping, robbing Lagos lady (Punch)

The Lagos State Police Command on Tuesday arrested one Olumide Oyewole for allegedly robbing and raping his victim.

Oyewole was accused of breaking into the house of a lady simply identified as Cynthia in the Ilasan area of Lekki, Lagos, raped and robbed her while armed with a knife.

Our correspondent gathered that the suspect committed the crime around 8 pm on Monday.

He was said to have tied the hands of his victim and had carnal knowledge of her and thereafter stole an iPhone 12 Promax, one Samsung S9, one small Nokia phone; two bottles of perfume, two wristwatches, one necklace, an iPhone charger and $10,000. Read more

Ex-soldier arraigned for impersonation (Punch)

A dismissed soldier, Mohammed Dagana, was on Tuesday arraigned before a Badagry Magistrate Court in Lagos State for allegedly impersonating a military officer.

Dangana, 31, whose address was not provided, pleaded not guilty to the charge of impersonation.

The prosecutor, Inspector Ayodele Adeosun, told the court that the defendant was arrested at noon on May 11, at the 243 Recce Battalion Barracks of the Nigerian Army, Ibereko, Badagry, Lagos State. Read more

Father bags life jail for defiling 8-year-old daughter (Punch)

A Lagos State Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court sitting in Ikeja, Lagos, on Tuesday, sentenced a 42-year-old man, Suleiman Usman, to life imprisonment for defiling his eight-year-old daughter.

Justice Rahman Oshodi convicted and sentenced him after finding him guilty of the offence.

The state government had arraigned Usman on two counts of defilement.

The offence he committed contravened Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015. Read more

Teenager stabbed to death over slippers ownership (Punch)

Men of the Lagos State Police Command have arrested two men for allegedly stabbing a 13-year-old boy to death over rubber slippers ownership.

The command’s spokesperson, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the arrest to the News Agency of Nigeria on Monday.

Hundeyin said the incident happened on Sunday around 6pm at Iganmu under the Bridge.

He said the Ijora Badia Police Division got the information from a concerned member of the public that some youths were mobilising to cause mayhem in the Iganmu area. Read more

Probe begins as rampaging youths set police station ablaze (Punch)

The Lagos State Police Command has commenced an investigation to track down the suspects behind the burning of the Oregun Police Post in the Ikeja area of the state.

PUNCH Metro gathered that angry youths in the early hours of Monday invaded the police post located on Olayiwola Close, set it ablaze and injured a policeman on duty.

The motivation behind the attack could not be ascertained as of the time this report was filed but our correspondent gathered that the policeman, who sustained an injury in the head, was rushed to the emergency centre at the toll gate along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway for prompt treatment. Mother, 2 daughters found dead in Lagos shop (Punch)

Men of the Lagos State Police Command are currently working to unravel the circumstances surrounding the death of a woman and her two daughters in a shop around PPL, Ijagun Okokomaiko area of the state.

The deceased, whose identities could not be immediately ascertained, were said to have locked themselves inside the shop for two days before their corpses were recovered.

While some residents suspected generator fumes as the cause of death of the three persons, some suspected food poisoning. Read more

Mother protests as Lagos principal brutalises 14-year-old pupil (Punch)

The mother of a Senior Secondary School student, Mrs Becky Folorunso, has cried out for justice after the Principal of Pholex Private School, Ebute-Metta in Lagos, allegedly brutalised her son for not writing class notes.

In an interview with PUNCH Metro on Friday, Folorunso said that was not the first time her son, Adam, would be flogged in such a manner by the principal, Adewale Adetona.

Pastor laments as mob beat mentally ill son to death (Punch)

A clergyman, Femi Kolade, is currently lamenting the death of his 27-year-old son, Sunday, in the hands of an irate mob in Lagos.

Sunday, who was said to have a history of mental illness, was said to have been taken for a thief and was beaten to death last week Wednesday on Ajibola Street, Alakara, in the Ayobo area of the Alimosho Local Government Area of Lagos. 

Kolade, in an interview with PUNCH Metro on Tuesday, said his son visited a friend in the area but because of his mental illness, residents of the street who thought he was a thief descended on him. Read more

EFCC secures conviction of 3 for N1.5b fraud in Lagos (Channels)

The Lagos Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), on Thursday, May 18, 2023, secured the conviction and sentencing of the trio of Semiu Oladiti, Owolabi Azeez and Nnagbogu Chikelu Nicodemus, who were prosecuted for a N1.5 billion fraud, before Justice O.O. Abike-Fadipe of the Special Offences Court sitting in Ikeja, Lagos.

Nnagbogu was arraigned on an amended one-count bordering on stealing to the tune of N15 million.

However, Azeez and Oladiti were arraigned separately alongside Dauda Adeboyega, Ojo Samson Gbemi, and Zuraai Gold Ventures Limited on an amended 13-count charge bordering on stealing to the tune of N1,598,144,188.36 (One Billion, Five Hundred and Ninety-Eight Million One Hundred and Forty-four Thousand, One Hundred and Eighty-eight Naira Thirty-six Kobo). NDLEA intercepts UK-bound N567m worth Meth, arrests baron, seals Lekki mansion (Channels)

Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, have intercepted a large consignment of methamphetamine concealed in powdered custard containers as part of a consolidated cargo going to London, United Kingdom at the SAHCO export shed of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, MMIA, Ikeja Lagos.

The illicit drug consignment weighing 30.10 kilograms with a street value of N567million was detected and seized by NDLEA operatives at the airport on Tuesday 16th May. This was swiftly followed by series of follow-up operations that led to the arrest of a freight agent, Nwobodo Chidiebere; a female suspect, Chioma Lucy Akuta and ultimately the drug lord behind the shipment, Charles Chinedu Ezeh, who was arrested at Sotel Suites, Amuwo Odofin, Lagos on Thursday 18th May.

Ezeh claims he’s a businessman and deals in articles in Onitsha, Anambra State but investigations reveal he lived with his wife and children in London until 10th December 2022 when he fled to Nigeria after his involvement in a drug related offence in the UK. Read more 

Super TV Boss Murder: Absence of defence lawyer stalls trial (ThisDay)

The ongoing trial of Chidinma Ojukwu, the alleged murder suspect of Super Television Chief Executive Officer, Usifo Ataga, was stalled yesterday due to the absence of her counsel, Mr. Onwuka Egwu.

The former 300-level Mass Communication undergraduate of the University of Lagos is standing trial on a nine-count charge bordering on murder, forgery and stealing preferred against her by the Lagos State Government.

She is also charged alongside one Adedapo Quadri and her sister, Chioma Egbuchu.
