Sergeant kills inspector over gate closure in Lagos (Punch)

An inspector of police, Adekunle Ilesanmi, has been killed by a sergeant, Okema Azuquo, in the Oke-Odo area of Lagos State.

PUNCH Metro gathered that Azuquo was quarrelling with some tenants over the time to close the gate of their place of residence on Dosumu Street in the Agbelekale area of Oke-Odo, when Ilesanmi intervened and attempted to subdue him.

Out of annoyance, Azuquo was said to have pounced on the inspector and dealt him several machete blows on his leg and other parts of his body.

A co-tenant, Ayodele Eyitayo, was said to have also sustained an injury on his face during the attack, which occurred last Thursday. Read more

Alleged Fraud: Court orders interim forfeiture of businessman’s N827m to FG (Vanguard)

Justice Chukwujeku Aneke of a Federal High Court in Lagos on Monday, ordered the interim forfeiture of N827 million recovered from a businessman, Matthew Edevbie, to the Federal Government.

Justice Aneke gave the order, following an ex parte application filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Aneke directed the EFCC to publish the order in any national daily for any interested party to appear before the court within 14 days and show cause why the money should not be permanently forfeited to the Federal government.

The court fixed June 29 for parties to show cause. Read more

Police nab 185 suspected cultists in Ikorodu, recover arms (Guardian)

Fresh onslaught against cultism and gang violence in Lagos State has led to arrest of no fewer than 185 suspects by special forces attached to Lagos State police command.

Two weeks ago, the Commissioner of Police, CP Hakeem Odumosu, had ordered the deployment of Special Forces from the command’s tactical units to Ikorodu and environs to tackle the menace of cultism and gang violence.  

It was gathered that operatives of the Special Strike Force on Social Miscreants took the battle to the cultist’s dens at Ikorodu, Ipakodo, Igbogbo, Ibeshe, Shagamu Road, Agbowa and other outskirts of the area. The operation, which was intelligence-driven, targeted top leaders and members of various cults and gangs. Read more

Command nabs Lagos traffic robber (Punch)

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested one Mayowa Adedoyin for allegedly attempting to rob a man in traffic.

The 19-year-old was arrested by operatives of the Rapid Response Squad around 9pm on Saturday in the Oshodi area of the state.

According to a statement by the RRS, Adedoyin was arrested when he and his accomplice attempted to rob the victim inside traffic.

PUNCH Metro learnt that while Adedoyin was arrested, his accomplice fled the scene. Read more

Rape epidemic: Four masked men gang-rape 12-year-old girl in Lagos (Punch) 

A 12-year-old girl, Blessing (not real name), is said to be experiencing trauma after she was allegedly gang-raped by four masked men at her residence in Abijo area of Ajah, Lagos State.

She was said to have been raped while playing alone in the compound around 2pm on Thursday.

Saturday PUNCH learnt that the victim, a secondary school pupil, was left bleeding from injuries she sustained in her private parts.

When our correspondent reached out to her mother on Friday morning, the victim was said to be asleep after receiving medical treatment.

The mother, identified simply as Anthonia, explained that she was not in the house when the perpetrators raped her daughter. Read more

Policemen arrest software developer, extort N10,000 (Punch)

A software developer, David Okwulili, on Thursday, narrated how operatives of the Anti-Cultism Unit of the Lagos State Police Command arrested and extorted him.

Okwulili via his Twitter handle, @dav_okwulili, said he was arrested by four policemen on Tuesday in the Gbagada area, while standing by the roadside and waiting for a tricycle to convey him home.

According to Okwulili, he followed a friend, who just moved to the Gbagada area, to buy buckets and while going back, he stopped over at a barber’s shop.

The software developer, in a series of tweets, said after he left the barber’s shop, he crossed to the other side of the road to look for a tricycle. Read more

Family demands justice over radio presenter’s death in church during childbirth (Punch)

The family of Seun Olorunto, whose remains were recovered from a Cherubim and Seraphim Church located at No. 3B Bayo Ajao Street, Aboru, Lagos State, has demanded justice for her death.

PUNCH Metro had reported that a prophetess in the church, Evelyn Owoleke (real name Tawakalitu Okedunmola), was arrested in connection with the radio presenter’s death during childbirth on the church’s premises.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Bala Elkana, had said in a statement that Olorunto was found in a pool of her own blood when detectives visited the church, adding that the corpse was deposited in a mortuary for autopsy and the baby was taken to hospital for treatment.

Olorunto’s mother, Oluwaseyi Agbolade, said the prophetess accommodated the presenter with the Faaji FM radio station against her will, adding that when the leader of the Cherubim and Seraphim Unification Church in Aboru questioned her about it, she denied the allegation. Read more
