Police under fire as car crash kills 3 on Lagos Lekki Bridge (Punch)

A fatal car crash at the Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge toll gate in Lagos has resulted in the death of three young individuals and ignited controversy over the handling of the incident by the police.

The accident, which occurred around 1:00 am on Monday, involved two cars carrying approximately eight people.

A social media user, Dr Love #Drweloveu, who shared details of the incident on Monday via X, said, “18-year-old driver killed 3 of his friends in an accident. Police arrested the remaining 2 survivors. The driver was about 18 years old and without a driver’s licence.” Read more

President Bola Tinubu is currently presiding over the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting at the Council Chambers of the State House, Abuja.

The Taraba State Government has directed residents of the state living along the River Benue valley to relocate to safer areas or face risk of being affected by flood.

The directive followed the announcement by the authorities of Lagdo Dam from the Republic of Cameroon that the dam managers have started releasing water from the dam.

Ogun commercial drivers protest multiple levies (Punch)

Some commercial drivers operating in the Mowe-Ibafo-Arepo areas of Ogun State stormed the expressway on Monday to protest multiple levies imposed on them by transport union workers, commonly known as Agberos.

Our correspondent, who monitored the protest, gathered from the drivers that they were subjected to arbitrary fees, which have caused them significant hardship.

The European Union has released €5.4 million in humanitarian aid to help the most affected populations in the aftermath of the devastating floods in Chad, Niger, Nigeria, Cameroon, Mali and Burkina Faso.

More than 4.4 million people are estimated to be affected in the six countries.

The man charged in connection with an apparent assassination attempt against Donald Trump in Florida this month dropped off a box at a person’s home that included a letter that declared, “This was an assassination attempt,” a court document revealed Monday.

The note came to light in a U.S. District Court filing asking that Ryan Wesley Routh, 58, be held in pre-trial detention. 

Law enforcement was contacted by a civilian on Sept. 18 who said that Routh had dropped off a box at his residence several months earlier, the filing said. The witness opened the box after learning of the Sept. 15 incident at Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida. Read more

Cameras caught Haaland throwing the ball against the back of the Arsenal defender’s head after John Stones had scored to make it 2-2 at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

The incident was missed by on-field referee Michael Oliver, but it was spotted by video assistant referee John Brooks, who decided it did not constitute violent conduct.
