A policeman serving at the Lagos State Police Command has absconded from duty after allegedly killing two people at the birthday party of his friend.

Command spokesman SP Benjamin Hundeyin confirmed the development on Wednesday to a Correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

He said that the command expected the suspect to turn himself in for investigation.

Oromoni: Court resumes sitting, bars journalists from covering minors’ testimonies (Guardian)

Coroner Magistrate Mikhail Kadiri, yesterday, barred journalists from covering the inquest in line with the Child Rights Act, as minors will be testifying.

The magistrate took the decision at the resumed hearing of the matter to unravel the circumstances that led to the death of Sylvester Oromoni Junior, a 12-year-old student of Dowen College Lagos. 

Two of the students of the school were scheduled to testify before the court yesterday, before the court registrar told newsmen that the hearing was mainly for lawyers, and urged newsmen and other interested parties to leave the courtroom.

Confirming the position, a representative of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Ikeja branch, Mr. Benard Oniga said: “Journalists will be shut out from covering the inquest this week, because minors will be testifying and the purpose is to protect the Child Rights Act. Read more

Lagos bizman battles Osun prince, wife over N6m diesel deal (Punch)

A businessman, Tonye Fynecontry, has accused an Osun State prince, Gbongboade Ademiluyi, and his wife, Olufunmilayo, of defrauding him of N6.6m.

PUNCH Metro gathered that Fynecontry, who deals in diesel supply, was approached by the couple for 33,000 litres of diesel needed at their quarry site in the Epe area of Lagos State.

They reportedly chose the Cross Country yard along Ajah Road as the location for the delivery of the diesel and allegedly made the businessman to secure a N6.6m loan to facilitate the supply of the product on their behalf.

Speaking to our correspondent, Fynecontry said relevant documents, including a N6.6m post-dated cheque, were obtained from the couple before he secured the loan and supplied the diesel. Read more

Abba Kyari: Drug baron with 103 bank accounts nabbed at Lagos airport (Punch)

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has arrested Chief Afam Ukatu, who it described as the billionaire drug baron behind the N3bn tramadol deal involving a suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police and former leader of the Intelligence Response Team, Abba Kyari.

A statement on Monday by the spokesperson for the agency, Femi Babafemi, said he was arrested “after months of surveillance and evading arrest.”

According to Babafemi, Ukatu, who is the chairman of Mallinson Group of Companies, was nabbed onboard a flight to Abuja at the MM2 terminal of the Lagos airport, Ikeja, on Wednesday, April 13.

He said, “Investigations reveal he’s been a major importer of large consignments of different brands and high dosages of tramadol hydrochloride, ranging from 120mg, 200mg, 225mg and 250mg, all of which are illicit. Read more

Lagos traders protest N600million loss to Ponzi scheme (Punch)

A businesswoman, Chinyere Emeka-Atu, has been accused of defrauding traders and market women of over N600m in Lagos State.

PUNCH Metro gathered that the woman used her company, Family Food Support Association, to gather unsuspecting members of the public, including petty traders, to part away with N9,000 every month to get a higher return on their investments.

The victims were said to have been promised a return of N200,000 cash and N90,000 worth of foodstuffs after nine months of investments in the association’s scheme.

However, for proper coordination, the businesswoman reportedly created about 39 groups headed by an independent leader under the association. Read more

Jumoke Oyedele Inquest: Coroner visits murder scene, police absent during proceedings (Independent)

The coroner presiding over the inquest of Jumoke Oyeleke on Monday visited the scene where she died from a gunshot allegedly fired by the police in Ojota during a rally by Yoruba secessionists sometime in July, 2021.

The 25-year old Miss Oyeleke was hit by a bullet after police fired shots to disperse the protesters during a Yoruba Nation rally on July 3, 2021.

The police had denied responsibility for her death, saying its officers never fired a “single live bullet.”

At the scene, a witness who had earlier testified, Banjoko Philips, explained how he and a trader carried Ms. Oyeleke’s remains from his compound outside to limit the number of people on the premises. He said the deceased, a salesgirl, was arranging her wares when the police chased some people inside his compound. Read more

Assault: Family seeks out-of-court settlement with LASUTH (Independent)

The Aso family and other well-meaning Nigerians have appealed to the Board and Management of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja, Lagos, to settle out of court as a result of the assault that happened in the Surgical Emergency Unit of the hospital on December 24, 2021.

A statement released from the office of the Chief Medical Director, Professor Adetokunbo O. Fabamwo, stated that Mr. Reginald Uwandu and Aso Family on Friday, December 24, 2021 in a national newspaper accused the hospital of negligence and demanded for a public apology after physically assaulting medical personnel on duty that fateful day.

He said the report was seen to intentionally project the hospital in a negative light upon the death of Mr. Aso.

After a thorough investigation, the hospital concluded that the physical assault on its members of staff at the Surgical Emergency Unit of the hospital was unwarranted. Read more

Ijaiye/Agbado Community lauds police on security (Independent)

The Ijaiye/Agbado Community in Lagos State met recently to assess the security issue of the area.

The landlords and residents gave a pass mark to the Ijaiye/Agbado Road Police Station on their 24-hour surveillance in order to curtail the menace of criminals.

The meeting was held near Jankara Motor Spare Parts Dealers where there they lauded the Divisional Police Officer, CSP Gbenga Ogunsakin, and his men for a job well done, adding that their effort was yielding a positive result.

Police storm cultists’ den, arrest 3, recovers guns in Ikorodu (NewTelegraph)

Three suspected cultists have been arrested by detectives attached to the Lagos State Police Command at Ikorodu area of the state.

The suspects identified as Oluwaseun Michael (31) alias Coded, Adedotun Jelili (25) and Solomon Moses (22), were arrested in their den.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) SP Benjamin Hundeyin in a statement Friday said they were acting upon intelligence provided by civic-minded people to the command.

He said the operatives of the Commissioner of Police Special Squad of the Command stormed some of the cultists’ den in Isawo, Ikorodu on April 16 and in the process arrested three of the cultists. Read more
