Protest: Accept FG’s olive branch, Ekiti Rep urges Nigerians

The lawmaker representing Ekiti North II in the House of Representatives, Akinlayo Davidson Kolawole, has called on Nigerians, especially youths, to accept the measures and palliatives of the Federal Government in its effort to persuade them to halt the ongoing national protest.

Honourable Kolawole stated in a press release that if the protest is not suspended, it may further plunge the country into an unbearable, unavoidable, and irrevocable economic crisis, potentially destroying the already fragile economy.

Honourable Kolawole, acknowledging that Nigerians, regardless of political or religious affiliations, deserve more sacrifices from their leaders now than ever before, argued that many of the problems facing Nigerians can still be resolved without street protests or confrontations.

According to him, the current economic crisis in Nigeria is also occurring in other parts of the world and can be addressed through patience, understanding, and cooperation between citizens and the government.

He noted that the Tinubu-led administration has been working to ease the burdens of all Nigerians, especially through various palliatives to mitigate the effects of subsidy removal, which he described as a major issue that previously drained the nation’s economy.

He commended President Tinubu for approving the distribution of trucks of rice, grains, fertilizers, and other foodstuffs to poor Nigerians, urging Nigerians to reciprocate the gesture by canceling the planned protest in the national interest.

He said: “It is high time Nigerians began to appreciate and pray for the success of their leaders, especially President Tinubu, to lead the country properly for the benefit of all citizens and future generations.

It is an undeniable fact that the current economic situation in Nigeria was not caused by the present leadership but rather by the lack of political will of some former Nigerian leaders to take necessary actions to place the country on the path of economic recovery and progress.

“The yearnings and expectations of Nigerians from President Tinubu to transform all aspects of the country’s economy are not unexpected because of the trust they have in his ability as a democrat and reputable administrator.”

Hon. Kolawole praised the courage of Nigerians in pressing their demands from the government, stating, “The latest agitation for improved governance has shown that Nigerians are capable of fighting for their rights without engaging any external force that may want to leverage their support to undermine the democratic system in the country.”

He urged the people to take advantage of the recent approval of an additional 10 trucks of rice by the Federal Government to each state, available at designated centers across the country, where 50kg bags of rice will be sold to every Nigerian at a subsidized price of N40,000.

According to him, this latest gesture is in addition to the 20 trucks of rice recently given to each state by the president for distribution to the poor in society.

The Federal Lawmaker also called on government officials handling both the free distribution and the sales of the grains at almost 50 percent to be transparent and fair to all. (Tribune)
