Some residents of Surulere in Lagos State on Wednesday expressed mixed feelings over the protest called by labour unions.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the country’s labour unions led by Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress(TUC) commenced a nationwide protest on Wednesday.
NAN also reports that the protest was organised to force down the fuel pump price that came with the removal of fuel subsidy by the Federal Government.
Our correspondents, who visited Empire/Ojuelagba area, report that activities were going on as usual in the early hours of the day.However, protests began in some areas of Lagos, including Ikeja, as early 7.00 a.m.
Aishat Ogundipe, a trader in Empire area of Surulere, said that the protest would not stop her from staying in her shop to make sales.
“Even if the protesters come to my location, I won’t join them. l will continue to do my business.
“I am aware a protest was meant to hold. The policies of the new government affect everyone both young and old, rich and poor,” she said.
A private sector worker, Temitope Okunbanjo, described the protest as “a joke.”
He noted that nothing was happening in his area and that should not be the case.
“NLC protests are not like I used to remember.
“Back then, when there was a call for a protest or a strike, there should be a total shutdown of activities. That is not the case today.
“Hopefully, with what they have embarked on today, we will see changes soon,” he said. (NAN)
