2,792 suspects arrested for various offences in Lagos (Vanguard)
Two thousand seven hundred and ninety-two suspects have been arrested by the Police in Lagos, for various offences ranging from murder, robbery, rape and cultism between January and mid-march, 2021.
Cultism recorded the highest arrest, with 343 suspected members of different confraternities, while armed robbery ranked second with the arrest of 234 suspects.
Ninety-one cases of murder and an additional 91 for rape/defilement were recorded during the period under review. Also, 127 gender-based cases were recorded. Read more
Controversy surrounds apprentice’s death in custody over businessman’s missing N14m goods (Punch)
An apprentice, Chinemremu Ogbu, has died in the custody of policemen attached to the Trade Fair Division of the Lagos State Police Command.
However, controversy is surrounding the circumstances of the 23-year-old’s death on Saturday.
While family members and other traders alleged that Ogbu was tortured to death for stealing goods worth millions of naira from his boss’ shop at the Trade Fair Market, the police insisted that he committed suicide in the cell.
PUNCH Metro gathered that trouble started between Ogbu and his boss, Fidelis Eduka, when the latter conducted an audit of the goods in his shop and reportedly discovered that goods worth N14m had been stolen. Read more
Woman hits pedestrian, dumps body on road (Nation)
A woman who allegedly knocked down a pedestrian with her Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) and dumped her body on the road has been taken into police custody in Lagos.
Police said Anita Harrison, upon finding that Nofiat Idowu was dead, discarded her on body Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
Harrison, police said, allegedly knocked down the woman on March 3 at Ikeja and eventually dumped her body along Lagos-Ibadan Expressway after she was confirmed dead at a hospital.
Parading the suspect yesterday, Commissioner of Police Hakeem Odumosu said her action was inhuman. Read more
Lagos Assembly investigates abuse, misappropriation of funds in councils (Vanguard)
Speaker of Lagos State House of Assembly Mr Mudashiru Obasa has constituted a joint committee of Public Account Committee (Local) and Local Government Administration and Community Affairs to investigate series of abuse and misappropriation of funds in Isolo and Ikosi Isheri Local Council Development Areas, LCDAs, which has been undermining the functionality of the legislature in the councils.
Obasa who asserted his authority after members of the House have deliberated on the issue stated that appropriate sanctions must be melted on any Chairman who is found guilty of the allegations.
According to him, “Beyond the issue of the budget, there is need to address the victimisation and threats of Councilors by Council chairmen; and the introduction of thugs into the Local Government chambers to beat up Councilors is something we must not allow and wherever it happens we must assert appropriate sanctions; we must ensure that such Chairman does not escape the consequence of such act.” Speaker maintained. How woman sold 5-month-old baby to Lagos couple for N900k (Guardian)
A 40-year-old woman, Chinyere Okechukwu, has been arrested for allegedly stealing a five-month-old baby from Anambra State, and selling the child for N900,000 to a couple in Lagos.
Preliminary investigations by detectives revealed that Okechukwu, who is alleged to run a child trafficking syndicate, had reportedly travelled to Anambra State with a young man, Chiano, to marry the 20-year-old mother of the child, Onyechukwu Okafor, early in March.
Okechukwu had, after paying N50,000 as the bride price of the single mother, also paid an extra N50,000 as money spent on hospital bills during the birth of the child.She had afterwards taken the mother to Lagos, and sold the child to a couple, Happiness Ibebuilo, 42 and Paul Ibebuilo, 40. Forex trader remanded for defrauding investors of N17.4m, $6,300 (Punch)
A self-acclaimed foreign exchange trader, Nanpan Yaniyang, has been remanded by the Lagos State High Court for allegedly defrauding investors of N17,449,000 and $6,300.
It was gathered that Yaniyang collected the said sums from one Valerie Okoli and other investors on the pretext of helping them to incorporate a company and invest the money in forex.
Yaniyang was arraigned on four counts bordering on stealing and obtaining by false pretences before Justice O. O. Abike-Fadipe.

Alleged Murder: Lagos rejects plea bargain of chef (Vanguard)
The prosecution team of the Lagos State Government has rejected the plea bargain agreement proposed by Joshua Usulor, a 21-year-old chef, who allegedly killed a lawyer at the Citiheights Hotel, Opebi, Lagos.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that during Usulor’s trial for murder on Monday at an Ikeja Special Offences Court, the prosecution counsel, O.A Bajulaiye-Bishi, informed the court that the Lagos State Directorate of Public Prosecution has rejected the agreement.
“My lord, the defendant through his counsel Mr Spurgeon Ataene had applied for a plea bargain agreement proposing a sentence of 25-years imprisonment.
“Unfortunately, the plea bargain agreement has been rejected and we will proceed with the trial,” Bajulaiye-Bishi said. Read more

Man hit by Lagos ambulance driver seeks medical help from Sanwo-Olu (Guardian)
A 29-year-old man, Mr Ismaila Bakare, who was knocked down on March 13, 2021 by an Ajah General Hospital ambulance has appealed to Lagos State government for medical assistance.
The driver, who was said to be on the wrong way around 6:00pm, hit Ismaila on his way home from Lekki Phase 1 roundabout. He was said to have rushed Ismaila to Lagos Island General Hospital, where he allegedly abandoned him.
The nurse in charge, Okunsanya Funmi, told The Guardian that as at Sunday, March 14, only one drip and an injection had been administered on Ismaila. Read more
4 remanded for impersonating Lagos environmental officers (Punch)
Four men, who allegedly impersonated officials of the Lagos State Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources officials, have been remanded in a custodial centre by the state mobile court.
It was gathered that the suspects, Afolayan Nurudeen, Fowowe Oluseyi, Kayode Olaleye and Muibi Babatunde, allegedly used fake documents to extort money from unsuspecting members of the public.
PUNCH Metro learnt that the ministry had received complaints from the public on the activities of some men who usually extorted money from them under the pretext of enforcing sanitation laws in different parts of the state.
According to the Director of Public Affairs of the ministry, Kunle Adeshina, the complaints prompted the ministry to liaise with officials of the Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Corps to be on surveillance for the suspects, who had been operating in the Orile Iganmu area before they were apprehended. NDLEA intercepts 200kg of hard drugs at Lagos, Abuja, Kano airports (ThisDay)
Attempts by some defiant traffickers to export hard drugs through the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, MMIA, Lagos; Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja and Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport, Kano have been foiled by operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), who seized 200 kilogrammes of the illicit substances from them.
Spokesman of the NDLEA, Mr. Femi Babafemi said in a statement yesterday that at the Lagos airport, a 41-year-old Adewuyi Olayinka was arrested while trying to export 650 grammes of cocaine wrapped in two parcels to the United Kingdom through the SAHCO export shed of the MMIA cargo, Ikeja.
The statement quoted the Commander, MMIA Command of the NDLEA, Ahmadu Garba, as saying that the drug was concealed in dry local pepper and herbal concoction popularly called ‘agbo’
In the same vein, 107 kilogrammes of hard drug suspected to be Khat has been seized at the cargo shed of the Kano airport while being exported to Canada. According to the Acting Commander, MAKIA Command of the NDLEA, Mr. Mohammed Ajiya, “the drug, which weighed 107kilogrammes was concealed in golden colour nylon bags covered with textile materials and labelled tea with a view to deceive and mislead our officers. One person was killed while three others were injured yesterday during cult war at Ijanikin area of Ojo, Lagos.

Lagos carpenter flees after allegedly defiling customer’s daughter (Punch)
A carpenter on Shittu Bashiru Street, Isheri Oshun area of Lagos is on the run after he was accused of defiling an 11-year-old girl.
The suspect, simply named as Wasiu, reportedly molested the girl on Thursday, February 25, while he was fixing a kitchen cabinet at the minor parents’ house in the community.
Our correspondent learnt that the girl was preparing to have lunch after returning from school that day when Wasiu allegedly went to her room and forcefully had sex with her.
Her father, Anayo Chijioke, said his wife contracted Wasiu to fit the cabinet, adding that they were not at home when the incident happened. Read more
3 nabbed for robbing UK returnee, neighbour of valuables worth N14m (Punch)
Three suspected members of a robbery gang operating in Ayobo, Ishefu, Baruwa and Gowon Estate areas of Lagos State, have been nabbed for allegedly dispossessing a United Kingdom returnee and his neighbour of cash and other valuables estimated at N14m.
The UK returnee identified simply as Tobi and his next door neighbour, Okeowo, were reportedly attacked about two weeks apart on Gemade Estate located within Gowon Estate.
One Aje, the kingpin said to be at large, reportedly led the suspects, Sheyi Olayiwola, Sadiq Adeniji and Maduka Godwin, to the two operations.
It was learnt that Aje alerted his gang shortly after Tobi returned from the UK in December 2020 and they stormed the victim’s house on the night of December 18, carting away naira notes and foreign currencies estimated at N1m. Read more
Bus drivers kill LASTMA officer, beat colleague to a coma (Punch)
No fewer than seven persons have been arrested in connection with the death of an official of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, Godwin Obasu, who, alongside his colleague, Hakeem Adeniyi, was reportedly attacked by commercial drivers in the Bariga area of the state.
Adeniyi, who sustained injuries during the incident, was said to be battling for his life at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja.
PUNCH Metro gathered that the two LASTMA officials apprehended a commercial bus for contravening the traffic law of the state.

Man held for ‘assault’ on Ikeja Electric’s employee (Nation)
A man identified as Saheed Olanrewaju aka Usama, has been arrested by the police in Lagos over alleged assault on an Ikeja Electric worker, Popoola Olakunle.
Olanrewaju, a resident of 12, Abiodun Street, Iju-Ishaga in Fagba, was alleged to have stabbed the disco official on the head two weeks ago while the later was on lawful duty.
It was gathered that the suspect fled after the incident but was subsequently apprehended with the help of the traditional ruler and policeman from the Oko-Oba Division.

Abandoned day-old baby rescued in Lagos (DailyTrust)
The Lagos State Police Command has rescued an abandoned day-old baby boy at Oko Oba, a suburb in the state.
According to the police spokesperson, CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, a good citizen found the baby penultimate Monday, March 15, 2021 at Oladejo street, Oko Oba, at about 10.20pm and informed the police at Abattoir division of the command, who picked up the baby for necessary medical attention and safety.
The State Commissioner of Police, CP Hakeem Odumosu, on Tuesday, March 16, 2021 received the baby in his Ikeja office and ordered the gender unit of the command to hand over the baby to the Child Protection Unit of the Lagos State Ministry of Youth and Social Development.
CP Odumosu expressed his intention to discuss with the ministry the processes of adopting the baby boy as soon as possible. Read more
Man in court for allegedly belonging to secret cult (Vanguard)
A 36-year-old man, Gbenga Olanrewaju, penultimate Wednesday appeared before a Surulere Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for allegedly stealing a mobile phone and belonging to an unlawful secret cult.
The defendant, who resides in Ijesha area of Lagos, is being tried for conspiracy, stealing and belonging to a secret cult.
The Prosecutor, Insp. Courage Ekhueorohan, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on March 4, about 6:58p.m. at Mabo Junction on Ishaga Road, Surulere, Lagos.Ekhueorohan alleged that the defendant and others still at large allegedly accosted one Blessing Madu and informed her that they were members of Aiye Confraternity (secret cult) to create fear into her.
