Ramadan 2018 : Price of fruits stable in Lagos (Vanguard)

Price of fruits remain stable in Lagos markets in spite of the approach of Ramadan. The fruits, popularly consumed during Ramadan, include orange, watermelon, apple and pineapple. A check conducted by NAN on Tuesday at Ikosi, Mushin and Oyingbo markets showed that 50 pieces of oranges range between N800 to N1500 depending on size. A dozen watermelon costs between N2500 and N8000 depending on size, while the price of a dozen pineapple ranges between N1500 to N5000 depending on size and variety. A bunch of banana costs between N200 and N1200, a piece of pear costs N100, while an apple ranges between N50 and N100 each. Read more

Lagos to re-grass Teslim Balogun, Campus mini stadium to host international matches (Guardian)

The Lagos State Government on Wednesday said that plans are underway to replace the artificial turf at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere and Campus Mini Stadium, Lagos Island with natural grass in preparation for the facilities to meet the required standard to host the Confederation of African Football (CAF) matches. Speaking at the ongoing annual Ministerial Press Briefing to mark the third anniversary of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode’s administration held at Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre in Alausa, Chairman of Lagos State Sports Commission, Mr. Kweku Adedayo Tandoh said the development was in line with the commitment of the present administration towards providing world class sporting facilities. Insecurity: LASG donates 20 patrol vehicles to Operation AWATSE (Vanguard)

The Lagos State Government on Tuesday inaugurated 20 patrol vehicles it donated to Operation AWATSE, a joint military task force against pipeline vandalisation and related criminal activities in the state. Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode presented the Toyota Hilux vehicles to the task force during a ceremony at Western Naval Command in Apapa, Lagos. Represented by the Commissioner for Special Duties, Mr Seye Oladejo, Ambode said the vehicles would enhance the effectiveness of OP AWATSE in ridding the state of criminal elements. “The 20 units of patrol vehicles being inaugurated today can only serve to increase the effectiveness of logistics management in the deployment of service personnel in fulfilment of the mandate of Operation AWATSE. Lagos hails Dangote’s decision to employ LSETF’s trainees (Punch)

The Lagos State Government has said the Dangote Group and other partners of the State Employment Trust Fund’s Employability Support Project have agreed to employ the over 350 graduates of the project following the completion of an eight-week training programme. The Executive Secretary of LSETF, Akintunde Oyebode, who stated this on Tuesday in Ikeja,  commended Dangote Group and other partners for the gesture, saying the Employability Support Project was a way of providing a viable platform to bridge the gap of shortage of skilled and employable labour in the job market. Lagos will leverage Technology to boost Security, Smart City Initiative, says Commissioner (ThisDay)

The Lagos State Commissioner for Science and Technology, Mr. Hakeem Popoola Fahm has reiterated the state government’s commitment to leverage on technology to drive its smart city initiative, improve security and automate transportation system in the state. The Commissioner, who gave the reassurance during his ministerial press briefing to commemorate the third anniversary of the administration of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State, said technology was more of a tool than a need itself and the state government would ride on it as a tool to drive development in the state, especially in the area of security, smart city initiative and transportation. Ambode emphasises need to equip civil servants (Nation)

The civil service represents the permanent government that must be equipped to adequately advise the government of the day, Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, has said. He added that they are also to implement government’s programmes, and effectively communicate the reason behind government-sanctioned programmes to the citizens. Ambode spoke at a workshop facilitated by Messrs Xls Consult Limited and organised by Ministry of Establishment, Training and Pensions, tagged: “Information Management for Positive Perception of Lagos State Government Programmes.” He said the net effect is that, if civil servants are well-equipped to discharge these tasks, government programmes will be positively perceived by the populace and will receive the needed support for success. Lagos creates Consultant Pharmacist Cadre in Govt Service (Independent)

History has been made in the quest for health workers’ career progression as the Lagos State Government has approved the creation of Consultant Pharmacist cadre in its scheme of service. FG signs $6.68bn Contract with CCECC for Ibadan-Kaduna part of Lagos-Kano Rail Line (ThisDay)

The federal government yesterday signed a contract agreement of $6.68billion on the Ibadan-Kaduna Railway segment of the Lagos-Kano Railway Line with the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC). The Minister of Transportation, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, in a statement by the ministry in Abuja, noted that the contract agreement is for the implementation of addendum number four Ibadan- Kaduna segment of the Lagos- Kano rail line at the cost of $6.68 billion. According to the statement, “This one is Ibadan- Kaduna rail line which is part of the Lagos-Kano rail line” he said. Read more

RECALP summit to host 2000 youths in Lagos (Nation)

The Young Adults and Youth Affairs group of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Lagos Province 19 is to hold its fourth Relationship, Entrepreneur, Career, Leadership, Politics (RECALP) on May 29, at RCCG, Province 19, Ogudu, its Pastor-in-Charge, Pastor Bisi Olowoyo, has said. In a statement, he said the summit tagged Enriching the next generation would equip the new generation of leaders and stimulate attendees, mostly youths to  attain their life goals. Olowoyo described RECALP as a platform to stir up the creativity, talents and skills in youths. Seminar on modelling holds in Lagos (Nation)

A seminar on entrepreneurial skills will hold between May 21 and 25 at the Ember Creek, Lekki, Lagos. The seminar, according to the organiser and facilitator, Mrs Joan Okorodudu, “is to teach aspiring models and practising ones the basics about the industry so they will know what they are getting into.” Mrs Okorodudu, the Managing Director of Isis Models, said: “We want to change the mind-sets of people who are either running the modelling industry or young models who are upcoming or those there already. We want to teach models about contract, certain entrepreneurial skills which will come in handy by the time they retire from modelling or when jobs are scarce.” Some of these skills, she said, include styling, make up, designing, hair styling, photography, acting among others. Command suspends cop that led land grabbers agency to Makoko (Punch)

The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Edgal Imohimi, on Tuesday said the command had suspended the officer in charge of the policemen that accompanied officials of the Lagos State Special Task Force on Land Grabbers to Ori Oke community in Makoko, Yaba. Punch Metro on May 11 had reported that armed policemen and officials of the Lagos State Special Task Force on Land Grabbers clashed with some youths in the neighbourhood during which two residents were killed. Boy, 8, tortured over allegation of being a wizard (Vanguard)

The pitiable sight of a fragile eight-year-old boy, with marks of violence all over his body sent waves down the spines of those present at the Lagos State Police command yesterday. The visible marks of violence were inflicted on the primary 1 pupil identified as Chinonye Iyonetu, by his aunt, Mrs Charity Iyoneto, over accusation of witchcraft. The victim as gathered was brought from his home town, in Gbaai, Nkota Local Government Area of Imo state, last year, by the suspect , after his mother abandoned him with his father. However, his ordeal began on reaching Lagos, as the suspect allegedly beat him at the slightest provocation. Read more

Police arrest nine-man gang in Lagos (Guardian)

The Lagos State police command Wednesday morning arrest members of a nine-man gang during an early morning raid on their hideout around Jakande Estate, along Lekki-Epe Expressway, Lagos. The Guardian gathered that a locally-made single barrel gun and several rounds of ammunition were recovered during the raid which was carried out around 5:30 am. Read more

Police arrest woman who tortured 12-year-old (Punch)

A woman, Charity Iyonetu, 45, has been arrested by the Lagos State Police Command for allegedly torturing a 12-year-old boy for allegedly being “possessed.” This was revealed on Tuesday by the state Commissioner of Police, Edgal Imohimi, during a parade of suspects at the police command headquarters in Ikeja. It was gathered that Charity, a mother of two, on visiting her home town in Ugwuta, Imo State, observed that the victim did not go to school. On inquiring about the boy, she was reportedly told that his father did not care about him because “the boy is possessed.” Read more

3 suspects arrested over murder at APC congress (Vanguard)

Policemen attached to Lagos State police command have arrested three persons over the murder of a young man during the APC Local Government Congress at Central Community Primary School, Oniwaya, Agege, Lagos on Saturday, May 12. Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Imohimi Edgal, said: “The election was allegedly factionalised, which led to protest. Consequently, some disgruntled ward members protested their non inclusion in the electoral process. “However, during the ensuing pandemonium, gunshots were heard from a distance. When the noise died down, one Nurudeen Lanlese, aged 40 years, was found in a pool of blood. One Bosun Adigun, Sabitu Kamorudeen and Semiu Ogunbono, who were suspects in the murder, were arrested and will be charged to court after investigation.” Read more

Lagos politician batters phone repairer for meddling in fight with wife (Punch)

A phone repairer, Rasheed Sunkanmi, is in trouble after meddling in a scuffle between a Lagos politician and his wife on Jimoh Akinsanya Street, Arepo, Ogun State. Punch Metro learnt that Sunkanmi was going home on a motorcycle when he saw a crowd on the street trying to stop the politician, identified as Odukunle Kuti, from beating up his wife. The phone repairer was said to have made a snide remark at the politician for beating up a woman, which the ex-councillor of the Ikosi/Isheri Local Council Development Area overheard. Read more
