Rape Conviction: Appeal Court reserves judgement on Lagos doctor’s application (Tribune)

The Court of Appeal, Lagos Division, has reserved judgment in the appeal filed by the Medical Director of Optimal Cancer Care Foundation, Dr Olufemi Olaleye, seeking to rescind the judgment of a lower court which convicted him of rape.

Olaleye was in October 2023 sentenced to life imprisonment by the Lagos State Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court for raping his wife’s niece who was a teenager when the defilement happened.

In his judgment, Justice Rahman Oshodi held that the prosecution, the Lagos State Government, had proved the charge against the defendant and the evidence against him was compelling. Read more

CLO advises Tinubu to end hunger, poverty in Nigeria now before anger rises (ThisDay)

A human rights group, the Civil Liberties Organisation (CLO), has called on President Bola Tinubu to urgently address the prevalent economic challenges affecting Nigerians.

CLO, in a statement, weekend, called on Tinubu to immediately put an end to hunger and poverty in Nigeria before the anger of Nigerians rises higher.The group also slammed the country’s leaders for being insensitive to the plight of the people, saying the time has come to confront leaders who were insensitive to the sufferings faced by Nigerians.President of the human rights group, Igho Akeregha, said in the statement that President Tinubu has not demonstrated enough commitment to advance the welfare of the  citizens. Nigeria Customs Service acquires aircraft (DailyTrust)

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has acquired a Cessna Grand Caravan EX-208B aircraft as part of its efforts to enhance its air patrol and surveillance operations.

The Comptroller -General (C-G) of NCS, Adewale Adeniyi, made this known in a statement issued by the service’s Spokesman, Abdullahi Maiwada, on Sunday in Abuja.

Adeniyi described the move as a game changer to the service, in its efforts to effectively perform its constitutional duties of combating smuggling. Read more

Rivers LG poll shows people are tired of emperors — Opara (Channels)

A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers State, Austin Opara, says the success of the conduct of the October 5, 2024 local government election in the oil-rich state shows the indigenes of the state are tired of oppression.

“What it portends is that Rivers people are tired of oppression, Rivers people are tired of emperorship, Rivers people are tired of dictatorship,” he said on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics programme.

The Leader of the Senate, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele has revealed how federal lawmakers from the South-west states lobbied their colleagues from other geo-political zones to pass the Bill for the establishment of the South West Development Commission (SWDC).

Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Board of Trustees, BoT, Senator Adolphus Wabara, yesterday lamented the woeful outing of his party in Saturday’s local government election in Rivers State, saying the party has lost the state.

Wabara spoke yesterday, as Governor Siminialayi Fubara swore in the 23 LG chairmen who emerged in the October 5, polls, insisting he was still in PDP.

The governor, however, raised the alarm that there are plans by some persons to unleash violence on LG headquarters today, as the new chairmen resume office. Read more

Joker: Folie à Deux has set a disappointing record, becoming the first comic book movie to earn a D CinemaScore from audiences. It’s also estimated to have made $40 million on its domestic opening, with a taking of $81 million outside of the US.

The anticipated sequel to Todd Phillips’ 2019 hit arrived in cinemas on October 4, but, unlike its predecessor, it hasn’t seemed to impress either critics or audiences.

1000s demonstrate in Accra against illegal mining in Ghana (AfricaNews)

Thousands of demonstrators filled the streets of Ghana’s capital, calling for an end to illegal mining in the country, also known as ‘Galamsey’.

Some in the crowd insisted that they would continue to pressure the government until it addresses the issue, and its damaging impact on the environment.

‘My motivation is to see that illegal mining stops in Ghana. We need to keep taking action, we need to keep going on strikes, we need to keep protesting to catch their attention, because they are acting like they haven’t seen it but we know they have,’ said one attendee. Read more

Experimental folk trio to represent NI at global music industry festival (Standard)

An experimental folk band which blends traditional Irish music with electronic sounds will represent Northern Ireland at a global music industry event in Manchester.

The Coras Trio will play the Horizons Stage at WOMEX 24.

Policewoman killed & 10 injured in shooting in Israel (BBC)

A policewoman has been killed and 10 others injured in a shooting in the southern Israeli city of Beersheba, local authorities said.

The gunman was shot dead at the scene after what police described as a “suspected terror attack” at the city’s central bus station.

The victim has been named as Shira Chaya Suslik, 19, a sergeant from Israel’s border police.

Israel’s ambulance service said medics are treating ten people for injuries, some of whom suffered gunshot wounds. Read more

Sao Paulo mayor’s race heads to a runoff without a controversial outsider in Brazil’s elections (ABC)

Incumbent Ricardo Nunes and leftist lawmaker Guilherme Boulos will face each other in a runoff to decide the next mayor of Sao Paulo, following a first round of voting Sunday in Brazil’s local elections.

Nunes, Boulos and self-help guru turned far-right politician Pablo Marçal were running neck-and-neck ahead of Sunday’s vote. Marçal only just missed out on earning a spot in the second round, slated for Oct. 27.

Much of the attention leading up to Sunday’s vote had been on Brazil ’s biggest city, where the race has been marred by episodes of violence involving Marçal. Read more

US tennis star Coco Gauff stormed to victory in the China Open final on Sunday, sweeping past Karolina Muchová 6-1 6-3.

The straight-sets victory makes the 20-year-old the first American to win the tournament since Serena Williams back in 2013 – she now has eight WTA titles to her name.
