How UNILAG alumnus raped, stole student’s underwear – Police (Punch)

A police officer, Nkem Ejelonu, on Tuesday, told a Lagos State Special Offences Court how an alumnus of the University of Lagos, John Otema, allegedly raped a student of the institution and stole her underwear.

Otema, who is facing three counts bordering on rape and assault occasioning harm, contrary to sections 173 and 260 (1) (2) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015, was accused of raping two students of UNILAG.

Otema was alleged to have on January 17, 2018, had unlawful sexual intercourse with student ‘X’ around the Distance Learning Institute on the UNILAG campus and also physically assaulted the victim by hitting her several times on the face, strangling her and biting her back; while on January 31, 2018, at his home at No. 6 Ajileye Street, Bariga, Lagos, he also had sexual intercourse with student ‘Y’ without her consent. Court remands man for allegedly raping 16-year-old daughter (Guardian)

A Yaba Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos on Wednesday ordered that a 50-year-old man, Gafar Anifowose, accused of defiling his 16-year-old daughter, be remanded in prison.

Chief Magistrate K.B. Ayeye, gave the order after the defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge and adjourned the case till June 3 for trial.

Earlier, the police prosecutor, Thomas Nurudeen, told the court that the defendant, on March 3, at about 9am at No. 5, Faniran str., Ikorodu, Lagos, raped his 16-year-old daughter twice and warned her not to tell anyone about what he did, an offence he said contravened the provisions of Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015. Police nab two armed robbery suspects in Lekki (Punch)

A team of police detectives has apprehended two suspected members of an armed robbery gang said to be terrorising residents of the Lekki area of Lagos State.

The suspects, Adebayo Ayomide and Isaac David, were arrested after they had allegedly robbed two residents of the area at gunpoint.

The team, which was led by the Divisional Police Officer, Maroko Police Station, CSP Isah Abdulmajid, was said to have embarked on a crime prevention patrol along the Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge around 9pm on Saturday. Read more

Court sentences man to death for robbing, shooting stepmother, stepsister (Punch)

A Lagos High Court sitting in Igbosere has sentenced one Akeem Lawal to death by hanging for shooting and robbing his stepmother, Taibat Lawal, and stepsister, Sherifat Olanipekun.

Justice Oluwatoyin Ipaye, on Monday, found Akeem guilty on two counts of conspiracy to rob and armed robbery.

According to the prosecution, Akeem and two of his gang members, who were masked, had on November 30, 2013, around 2am, on 12 Lawal Street, Akowonjo in the Egbeda area of Lagos State, destroyed the front door to his stepsister’s room, with an axe and robbed and shot her and her 90-year-old mother, leaving them to die. Man bags death sentence for robbing, attacking own 90-year-old mother with machete (Daily Trust)

A Lagos State high court in Igbosere, on Monday, sentenced a man, Akeem Lawal, to death by hanging for attacking his 90-year-old mother, Taibat, with a machete.

Delivering judgment, Justice Oluwatoyin Ipaye also found the defendant guilty of attacking his stepsister, Sherifat Olanipekun with a machete and a gun.

Lawal was arraigned on May 3, 2016, on two counts amended charge of conspiracy to robbery and armed robbery, preferred against him by the Lagos State Government. Read more

Command arrests three suspected kidnappers (Punch)

Personnel of the Lagos State Police Command have arrested three suspected cultists for allegedly kidnapping people for ritual purposes in the Ikorodu area of the state.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Bala Elkana, in a statement on Tuesday, said a team of policemen on surveillance around Adama in Ikorodu had a gun battle with the suspected cultists when their hideout was raided.

He added that during the exchange of gunfire, a student, Hadiyat Sikiru, was hit by a stray bullet; two police officers sustained injuries; while three of the suspected cultists, Ahmed Hassan, Daniel Enyin and Olaniran Alium, were arrested. Read more
