Man bags life imprisonment for raping UNILAG student, judge slams victim (Punch)
A Lagos State Domestic Violence and Sexual Offences Court, Ikeja, on Tuesday, sentenced a man, Collins Okechukwu, to life imprisonment for raping and robbing a 25-year-old student at the University of Lagos, Akoka.
Delivering judgement, Justice Abiola Soladoye, who described Okechukwu as a pathological liar, held that the prosecution proved the charges of rape and robbery against Okechukwu beyond reasonable doubt.
The News Agency of Nigeria reported that the judge sentenced Okechukwu to life imprisonment for rape, and 21 years’ imprisonment for robbery.
She said, “The testimony of the defendant portrayed him as a pathological liar in the sense that he claimed that University of Lagos Guest House was fully booked and the survivor was sex-starved, which made them have sex on the bare floor. Read more
Lagos motorcycle riders clash as man stabbed during street fight dies (Punch)
There was pandemonium in the Ipaja area of Lagos State on Monday when motorcycle riders protesting the killing of their colleague clashed with some persons linked to the death.
PUNCH Metro gathered that there was a fight in the area on Saturday and the yet-to-be-identified victim was stabbed.
He was said to have been rushed to a hospital where he succumbed to the injuries he sustained during the clash.
When news of his death filtered in on Monday, his friends and loyalists took to the streets in protest. Read more
Woman seeks divorce over religious difference (DailyTrust)
A woman, Kehinde Soetan, on Tuesday, approached an Igando customary court, urging it to grant her divorce from her husband due to religious differences.
Kehinde told the court that her marriage to Mr Akins Soetan did not allow her to practice her, Christian faith.
She said, “My Lord, I want the court to grant me a divorce from my husband.
“We have been living apart for 13 years already. After our marriage in 2007; we barely lived together for two years when issues started.
“I am a Christian and he’s a Muslim; before we got married, he told me that I would be able to practice my religion without any hindrance, but that was not to be as he refused me going to church and wanted me to practice his religion. Read more
Tompolo’s vessel under EFCC custody sinks in Lagos (Leadership)
A boat seized by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and owned by Niger-Delta warlord, Government Ekpemupolo, also known as Tompolo, has sank in Lagos waters.
In a statement sent to LEADERSHIP by the assistant director, Public Relations, Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Edward Osagie, he clarified that the vessel was one of the Global West’s platforms engaged by NIMASA some years ago.
Though christened NIMASA Barugu, Osagie said the boat and its management have been a subject of litigation while its crew doesn’t report to NIMASA anymore.
According to him, the boats and its management have remained a subject of litigation and under the custody of the EFCC for years. Read more
48 CSOs ask IGP to probe attack on HEDA director’s home (Guardian)
No fewer than 48 civil society organisations (CSOs) have called on the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Usman Baba, to urgently investigate the odd hour attack on the Lagos home of the Executive Director, Human and Environmental Development Agenda (HEDA), Olarenwaju Suraju.
In a statement made available to The Guardian, yesterday, the CSOs, led by Rule of Law and Accountability Advocacy Centre (RULAAC), Lagos, expressed shock over the March 28, 2022 raid on Suraju’s home by armed men, who tied him and his wife up and subjected them to inhuman treatment before their children.
Executive Director of RULAAC, Okechukwu Nwanguma, stated: “We are informed that about five armed men broke into Suraju’s home on the said day and subjected him and his wife to verbal threats and severe beatings. The attackers also took away valuables such as phones, laptops and a car.
“This attack and the dispossession of the Surajus of sensitive personal items have left the family traumatised and exposed them to further risks of the likelihood of invasion and illegal access to their private data, including bank information.” Read more
Police arrest one for kidnapping, murder of two in Lagos (Guardian)
Operatives of Lagos State Police Command have arrested a suspect involved in the kidnap of three people and murder of two men in Oshin area of Ayobo-Ipaja in Lagos State on Tuesday.
Spokesperson for the Command, Superintendent of Police (SP) Benjamin Hundeyin, disclosed this in an interview with The Guardian.
According to Hundeyin, a link has been established between the suspects and the rest of the kidnappers.
The gunmen at about 6:00p.m. on Friday, broke into the residence of one Mr. Rashidi Salami and whisked his two daughters away. Read more
No request to test black substance found on Oromoni, court told (Guardian)
A Lagos-based forensic toxicologist, Benedict Agbo, yesterday told a Coroner Inquest sitting in Ikeja that there was no request to test the blackish substance found in the intestine of the late 12-year-old student of Dowen College, Sylvester Oromoni Junior.
Agbo disclosed this in his evidence before Magistrate Mikhail Kadiri, in an ongoing inquest to unravel the cause of Sylvester Oromoni’s death.
He said he did not receive a request to test the blackish substance found on the deceased.
The second autopsy conducted by a pathologist, Dr. Sokunle Soyemi with the Lagos State Teaching University Hospital (LASUTH) had revealed that there was blackish substance found in the intestine of the deceased. Read more
Police stop 67-year-old man from committing suicide on his birthday (NewTelegraph)
Officials of Lagos State Rapid Response Squad (RRS), on patrol of the Third Mainland Bridge yesterday prevented what would have been another suicide jump into the Lagos lagoon, when they stopped a 67-year-old man from taking a deadly dive into the water.
Though it is not the best of wish anyone would love to make, but Mr. Oluwatoye Bamgboye chose his birth day to, in his own words, “end it all”.
However, before he could take the disastrous dive, men of the Lagos RRS came to his rescue and eventually whisked him away to Adekunle Police Station, Yaba. “Today being my birthday, I have decided to end it all. The burden and the frustration is too much for me to bear,” he complained to the police, adding, “My wife has abandoned me in the process.”
The police said Bamgboye, from Oju-Ore, Sango, Ogun State, was attempting to jump into the Lagos Lagoon inward Lagos Island when the officers stopped him. “He disclosed that a personal challenge made him sell his house, land and car. With that, he still couldn’t solve the problem. Read more
Police intercept busload of illicit drugs worth 10m in Lagos (Independent)
The operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) in the early hours of Sunday, April 3, 2022, intercepted a busload of illicit drugs at the Mile 2 area of Lagos State.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the drugs which were loaded in a Lagos colour LT bus, with the registration number AGL 205 YD belonged to one Alhaji, better known as General in Mushin.
A statement by the Lagos State Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin stated that a member of the drug syndicate confessed that they picked up the consignment, which has a street value of about Ten Million Naira (10,000,000.00), at Alaba Rago around 2200hrs yesterday for shipment to Mushin.
SP Hundeyin further stated that luck ran out on the suspects when RRS officials on patrol stopped the bus on a routine check at about 0400hrs on Sunday. Read more
