Resident Doctors declare indefinite strike (DailyTrust)
The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) on Tuesday night declared an indefinite nationwide strike.
President of the association, Dr Orji Emeka Innocent, said the strike will commence at 12 midnight on Tuesday.
He said the strike was declared during the National Executive Council meeting of the association in Lagos. Read more
DSS men, Prisons officials in free-for-all over Emefiele (Vanguard)
Forty-six days after he was arrested by the Department of State Services, DSS and two weeks after a Federal High Court in Abuja gave an order for his release or arraignment for any offence he might have allegedly committed, suspended Central Bank Governor, Mr Godwin Emefiele, was yesterday arraigned for illegal possession of firearms and granted bail by a Federal High Court sitting in Lagos.
Emefiele’s arraignment was, however, enmeshed in drama, following a scuffle between DSS operatives and officials of the Nigerian Prisons Service, over which of the agencies should take custody of Emefiele after he was granted bail in the sum of N20million by Justice Nicholas Oweibo.
The scuffle between the two agencies later culminated in a free-for-all as the Armed Squad Commander of the NPS, Williams Udom, who had come to give tactical support to the prison officials in the court premises, was manhandled, with his service uniform torn. Read more
8 die, 15 injured in Jigawa auto crash (Guardian)
About eight people were killed, while 15 others sustained injuries in an auto crash, involving three commercial vehicles in Jajimaji, Birniwa Local Council of Jigawa State.
The Guardian gathered that the incident, which occurred in the night last Sunday, involved vehicles conveying traders to Jajimaji and Hadejia markets.
Secretary of Birniwa Branch of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Mal Baba, in a statement, yesterday, confirmed that its officials visited the scene and conveyed the remains of the deceased persons to their families for burial, while those who sustained injuries were taken to Birniwa General Hospital for medical attention. Badagry port ready in 2 years, says Sanwo-Olu (Punch)
The Governor of Lagos State, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, revealed on Tuesday that the state had obtained approval for the building of a port in Badagry to decongest Apapa and Tin Can.
The governor expressed the hope that with the collaboration of investors, the Badagry port should be delivered “in two years or so.”
Sanwo-Olu disclosed this while receiving the acting Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Mr Adewale Adeniyi, and a delegation of the NCS who paid him a courtesy visit at the Lagos House, Marina, on Tuesday. Read more
Lagos dismisses threat of fire outbreak in Aboru, Iyana Ipaja (Guardian)
Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service (LSFRS), yesterday, dismissed claims of threat of fire outbreak in Ipaja and Aboru area of the state. The Service, in a statement by its Director, Margaret Adeseye, was reacting to a circulated video, alleging pipeline vandalism and raising concerns of a possible fire disaster in the area.
She said: “A three minutes, 50 seconds video has been trending since Monday evening, July 24, on a purported pipeline vandalism around Aboru area of Ipaja, Lagos.
“A male voiceover in the video is alerting the authority of the state to come to the community’s rescue in averting the imminent danger they are prone to, if it results in a fire outburst. Read more
Alleged N1.35b Fraud: Appeal Court frees Sule Lamido, sons, others (Independent)
The Court of Appeal, Abuja Division, on Tuesday, absolved former Jigawa State governor, Alhaji Sule Lamido, his sons and others of any wrongdoing in the alleged N1.35 billion charge levelled against them by the Federal Government.
Lamido, his sons and other defendants were arraigned on a 37-count charge at the Federal High Court, Abuja, by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in 2015, over allegation of money laundering while in office as governor of Jigawa State.
Other defendants charged alongside the former governor included his two sons, Aminu and Mustapha. Read more
Court dismisses ASUU’s suit, validates CONUA, NAMDA as trade unions (Channels)
The President of the National Industrial Court, Abuja, Justice Benedict Kanyip, has dismissed a suit filed by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), challenging the registration of the Congress Of University Academics (CONUA) and the Nigeria Association of Medical and Dental Academics (NAMDA) as trade unions by the Federal Government.
Delivering judgment on Tuesday, Justice Kanyip held that Section 27 of the Trade Union Act allows for more than one trade union in employment.
He held that the section does not depict trade monopoly. Read more
