Residents allegedly kill, dump bodies of three robbery suspects in Lagos canal (Vanguard)

Aggrieved residents allegedly killed three suspected members of a robbery gang who invaded Igando community, a Lagos suburb, Tuesday.

The suspects according to residents were members of the ‘One Million Boys’ terror gang, who had earlier written a letter on their unprecedented visit, warning residents to keep cash for them or have their wrists chopped off.

When Vanguard arrived at the community by 12 noon Tuesday, the corpses were found floating on a canal by the link bridge between Igando/Abaranje.

Residents told Vanguard that since the lockdown, terror gangs had threatened to attack communities in Igando, thereby forcing them to form vigilante group. Read more

Pastor accuses Lagos hospital of negligence after wife’s death during childbirth (Punch)

A Lagos-based pastor, Ayobami Taiwo, has accused health workers at the Epe General Hospital of negligence, following the death of his wife, Oluremi Esan, during childbirth.

The 40-year-old Taiwo lamented that the doctor and nurses on duty abandoned his wife after she was referred on emergency to the hospital by the Epe Primary Health Centre.

He explained that it was discovered during a scan on April 13, 2020, that Oluremi had placenta previa and a Caesarean Section needed to be performed to save her life and that of the baby.

The pastor told PUNCH Metro that when he refused to buy a delivery kit that was claimed would be needed for the operation from the nurses, his wife was left unattended to by the doctor and the nurses.

Taiwo stated, “When we got to the doctor at the general hospital, he checked my wife’s file and said the case was a ‘time bomb’ and that Oluremi required a CS and I told him that was what we were told at the primary health centre and that I was told that my wife should not be allowed to have any contraction, because it would lead to us fighting for her life. Seven die, six injured in Lagos accidents (Guardian)

No fewer than seven persons were confirmed dead with several others injured yesterday in separate accidents that occurred in three locations in Lagos State. The deceased, four of whom are members of two families, died on the spots.

The first accident that claimed four lives happened when a car rammed into some commuters standing at a bus stop at Ogudu, inward Third Mainland Bridge, another one was recorded at Sangotedo, Ajah, while the third accident involved a Mazda bus and a motorcycle, which claimed two lives around new Kara market, on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway.

Public Relations Officer, Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE), Babatunde Akinbiyi, confirmed the Lagos-Ibadan incident to newsmen in Abeokuta. Akinbiyi noted that the accident, which occurred at about 9:30a.m. was caused by reckless driving and wrongful overtaking on the part of the bus driver.

“Due to reckless driving, the bus marked AME 805 XA hit the moving Bajaj motorcycle marked SGM 149 V, after that, the bus lost control and rammed into a moving trailer from the rear. The trailer did not stop. Read more 

Six arrested at suspected kidnappers’ den in Lagos (Guardian)

Residents with the help of soldiers yesterday uncovered a tunnel used by suspected ritualists at Ladipo bus-stop, Agege Motor Road, Lagos State, while six suspects have been arrested with efforts ongoing to fish out other members of the gang who were running father inside the tunnel.

Military uniforms, camouflage, schools uniforms, clothes belonging to persons suspected to have been declared missing and other personal effects were recovered from the tunnel. It was gathered that trouble started for the suspected ritualists when they accosted a woman who was going to work in the early hours of yesterday.

The woman was being dragged into the tunnel by the suspects, but by divine intervention, she escaped and raised the alarm, which attracted other passersby.

As sympathisers were chasing after the suspects, they ran into the tunnel. Read more

Danfo, okadas return to Lagos roads as NSCDC intercepts seven in Ilorin (Guardian)

Officials of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) yesterday nabbed seven commercial vehicles who were passing through Ilorin, in Kwara State from Lagos State.

According to the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of NSCDC, Kwara Command, Ayeni Olasunkanmi, the seven vehicles, fully loaded were stopped while passing through Ilorin for violating the coronavirus lockdown issued by the state government.

Kwara had a week ago reviewed its earlier decision to allow vehicles to move on days earlier designated for the restocking of foods and other essentials, directing residents to instead patronize neighbourhood shops and observe all safety protocols. The review means that commercial and private vehicles are now barred from operating, except trucks and trailers conveying foodstuffs, medicines and other essential services.

Speaking on the intercept of the vehicles coming from Lagos, Ayeni said: “The drivers and passengers were arrested for violating the stay-at-home restriction by the government. All arrested persons have been taken to Sango Magistrates’ Court, Ilorin, for proper prosecution.”

Also, fully-loaded commercial vehicles were spotted yesterday at Iyana-Isolo area of Lagos moving towards Toyota-Oshodi area of the state. Commuter buses undertaking intra and inter-state trips in Lagos have continued to ply their business in defiance of the federal government’s lockdown order. Read more

Confusion over alleged killing of man by Lagos hoodlums (Punch)

The father of one Junaid Adewale, identified simply as Mr Owenco, allegedly lost his life when suspected members of the One Million Boys terrorised residents of Ijesha in the Surulere area of Lagos State on Saturday.

However, the alleged killing is shrouded in confusion as the state police command denied knowledge of the incident.

PUNCH Metro gathered that the suspected gang members created tension in the area around 7pm and allegedly used weapons to attack the residents they encountered on their way.

Owenco, who was said to be elderly, was reported to be on his way to a destination, when the crisis suddenly started, but while he was attempting to escape with other residents, he was said to have stumbled and fell to the ground in the process.

While trying to get back on his feet, it was learnt that the rampaging hoodlums caught up with Owenco and allegedly dealt several machete blows on him and left him for dead. Read more
