President Bola Tinubu and the Peoples Democratic Party governors on Tuesday intervened to stop the impeachment moves against Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

The President conferred with the embattled governor and his predecessor, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. 

The Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, disclosed this shortly after the Nigeria Police Council met for the first time under the Tinubu administration. Read more

Isaac Oyedepo, the pastor and son of Bishop David Oyedepo, has spoken out about rumors that he left his father’s church to start his own ministry.

Isaac, Oyedepo’s second son was said to have resigned from his father’s church, Living Faith Worldwide in a bid to form his own ministry.

Isaac, in a statement said he is still a member of Living Faith Church Worldwide and that the relationship between him, family and father was still very intact. Read more 

Tinubu warns son, Seyi, against ‘undue access’ to FEC meeting (DailyTrust)

President Bola Tinubu has warned his son, Seyi, and other persons from interrupting meeting of the Federal Executive Council (FEC).

The president said he observed Seyi and other unauthorised persons breezing in and out of the federal cabinet meeting convened every week to discuss the most crucial issues of national importance.

He cautioned specifically that such activities must end.

“Last week, I noticed the undue access of people sneaking in and out of this Council, including… I saw the photograph of my son, Seyi, sitting behind. That is not acceptable. I will announce to you those people who are supposed to be here,” he said. Read more 

Obi flays executive criminal mindedness, seeks parliamentary system (Guardian)

Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has said change will not come until Nigerians destroy the structure of criminal enterprises established by politicians. He also lamented the purchase of vehicles worth N160 million for each federal lawmaker at a time when “people are suffering”.

Obi spoke at Ajao Estate, Lagos, during a condolence visit to the residence of the late constitutional lawyer and pioneer Secretary General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Prof. Ben Nwabueze, whom he described as “consistent, honest, and truthful about a better Nigeria.”

He said: “Constituency projects are criminal. Because the executive is also criminally minded, it succumbed to things like that. Rascality and bad behaviour has been our culture. We should go back to the parliamentary system of government. It allows the people we voted to speak to us. Read more 

‘Judiciary Has Vindicated Me’: Sylva hails judgment returning him as APC candidate (Channels)

Timipre Sylva has hailed the Court of Appeal judgment that reinstated him as the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the November 11 Bayelsa poll.

A High Court had nullified Sylva’s candidature but the Court of Appeal on Tuesday said the lower court was wrong in its verdict.

Lagos secures $1.35b deals for 4th Mainland Bridge, Blue Rail (Nation)

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has signed partnership with the African Export-Import Bank and Access Bank for long-term infrastructure projects.

The deals were signed at the Africaribbean Trade and Investment Forum 2023 in Guyana.

The governor listed some of the key projects to be serviced by the agreements, to include  Fourth Mainland Bridge, Omu Creek Project and 2nd Phase of the LRMT Blue Line from Mile 2 to Okokomaiko. He said his administration was committed to creating a better future for the state. Read more 

Senate confirms Adedeji FIRS chairman (ThisDay)

The Senate yesterday, confirmed Mr. Zach Adedeji as the Chairman, Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS).

The new FIRS boss during his screening, pledged that the agency would re-access and re-evaluate the importance of tax waivers issues to some organisations.

President Bola Tinubu had appointed Adedeji in September, to take charge of the revenue agency in acting capacity after directing Muhammad Nami to proceed on a three-month pre-retirement leave.

Speaking when he appeared before the lawmakers, Adedeji said, “On tax credit scheme, when we developed it, there was a goal, we will check our goal when we set up this economic policy; is it still serving that economic policy and that is why change is inevitable most of the time. Read more

The Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, on Tuesday, said his administration has continued to prioritise education in the state.

The governor stated this at the maiden Education Day celebration tagged ‘A Day With His Excellency’, held at Emeritus Professor Theophilus Ogunlesi Hall, UCH, Ibadan.

The governor, who spoke through his deputy, Mr Abdul-Raheem Adebayo Lawal, said education was at the forefront of the present administration hence its allocation of about 20 percent of its budget to education. Read more 

Zimbabwe’s cholera crisis fuelled by chronic water shortages (BBC)

For months now, Zimbabwe has been battling to stem the spread of deadly cholera in its cities and villages because the country simply lacks clean water.

“If the water comes at all it’s often dirty,” Regai Chibanda, a 46-year-old father of five from the sprawling township of Chitungwiza, told me.

Cholera, an acute diarrhoeal infection caused by consuming food or water contaminated with the bacterium Vibrio cholerae, can spread quickly in cramped and dirty conditions. Read more 

Senegal electoral commission says opposition leader Sonko should be given sponsorship forms (France24)

Senegal’s electoral commission on Tuesday asked that sponsorship forms be given to main opposition leader Ousmane Sonko, whose candidacy for the upcoming presidential election has been called into question over the past year amid a series of criminal charges.

The move comes as Sonko remains hospitalized because of a hunger strike he began earlier this month and as he awaits a decision from a West African regional court.

The ECOWAS Court of Justice said that it would render its verdict next week on Senegal’s dissolution of Sonko’s political party. Read more 

King Charles III says there “can be no excuse” for colonial abuses in Kenya (AfricaNews)

There can be “no excuse” for the atrocities committed against Kenyans during British colonial rule, King Charles III said on Tuesday in the East African country, but did not ask for forgiveness as some had demanded.

“Abhorrent and unjustifiable acts of violence were committed against Kenyans while they were (…) waging a painful struggle for independence and sovereignty. And for that there can be no excuse”, the British monarch said at a state dinner hosted by Kenyan President William Ruto.

Charles III said he hoped to “meet some of those whose lives and whose communities were so badly affected” by colonial abuse. Read more 

Bruce Springsteen inducts wife Patti Scialfa into New Jersey Hall of Fame (FarOut)

Bruce Springsteen made his first public appearance since postponing his tour dates due to health reasons and inducted his wife, Patti Scialfa, into the New Jersey Hall of Fame.

At the ceremony on October 29th, Scialfa was celebrated alongside The Sopranos creator David Chase, who was inducted by the E-Street Band’s Steven Van Zandt. The event marked the 15th anniversary of the Hall of Fame, and hosting duties were carried out by local legend Danny DeVito.

Xbox will block 3rd-party controllers to “preserve the console experience” (NME)

Microsoft will not allow players to use unauthorised third-party controllers and accessories for their Xbox from November in the interest of “performance, security, and safety”.

Windows Central reported that players have been encountering error “0x82d60002” when they attach a third-party accessory in an article from October 29.

“Using unauthorised accessories compromises your gaming experience. For this reason, the unauthorised accessory will be blocked from use on 11/12/2023,” read the pop-up on the console. It then advised the player to return the product to the store or talk to the manufacturer. Read more 

Ugandan court orders American couple to compensate tortured 10-year-old (VOA)

An American couple in Uganda has been convicted of cruel and inhumane treatment of a 10-year boy, who was in their care.

The couple was found guilty of six charges and ordered to pay more than $26,000 in compensation to the boy, who is now in a children’s home.

Justice Alice Komuhangi started delivering her verdict by describing the situation as a systemic problem with no mechanisms to take care of children like the 10-year-old. Read more 

General Motors reaches deal with union that could end strike (LBC)

General Motors and the United Auto Workers union have reached a tentative contract agreement that could end a six-week-old strike against the Detroit carmaker, a person briefed on the deal said.

The deal follows the pattern set with Ford last week and Jeep maker Stellantis over the weekend.

The deals will last four years and eight months and include 25% general pay raises and cost of living adjustments. Read more

Karate: 200 athletes to compete at Zainab Saleh tourney (Punch)

At least 200 karatekas are expected to compete at the 9th edition of the Zainab Saleh International Female Karate Championship scheduled to hold from November 2nd to 5th at the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Lagos.

Founder, Zainab Saleh, revealed this to journalists at a press conference organised at the Sports Bar of the Teslim Balogun stadium.

“We are expecting over 200 athletes who have already registered for the competition as we begin on Friday, November 3rd. The tournament will start with the referees course and examination on Thursday, November 2nd which is the standard at all African and World tournaments,” Saleh said. Read more

Vinicius extends Real Madrid deal until 2027 (Channels)   

Brazilian forward Vinicius Junior has signed a new contract with Real Madrid that runs until 2027, the Spanish club announced on Tuesday.

“Real Madrid and Vini Jr. have reached an agreement to extend the player’s contract, linking him to the club until 30 June 2027,” the club said in a statement.

Oxford City Stars make neck guards mandatory after death of ice hockey player Adam Johnson (ITV)

An English ice hockey team will introduce mandatory neck guards after the death of Nottingham Panthers player Adam Johnson.

Oxford City Stars announced the move after the 29-year-old forward suffered a fatal injury at Sheffield Steelers on Saturday.

Johnson was on the ice when his neck was reportedly cut by an opponent’s skate.

Oxford said the guards would become a “non-negotiable component of their attire” for all players and coaching staff “during all on-ice activities going forward”. Read more
