Rivers police arrest man for raping pastor’s pregnant wife to death (Punch)
Men of the Rivers State Police Command have arrested a suspect identified as Emeka, who allegedly led the gang rape of the wife of a Pastor, Mrs. Chigbewejim Steward, to death in the Abarikpo community in Ahoada East Local Government Area of the state.
The suspect, after quarrelling with Mrs Steward earlier that day, broke into her house at midnight with his gang on February 12, 2023 kidnapped the woman, and ferried her to an unknown destination.
The suspect was said to have fled from the community after getting information that the police were on his trail. Read more

Arewa youths merger group on Friday, May 31, expressed its gratitude to the managing director of the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA), Chukwuemeka Agbasi for the agency’s proactive measures taken to address the deteriorating condition of federal roads across the country, especially in the northern region.
The group hailed FERMA for making the repairs as the rainy season approached in the north.

Those who spoke to our correspondent in Makurdi, the Benue state capital, said Nigeria is currently experiencing a crisis situation that requires urgent attention and changing from new to old anthem is not one of them and should not be prioritized at the moment.

Passengers, farmers, others killed as bandits hit Katsina communities (DailyTrust)
At least 17 people were reportedly killed in separate bandits’ attacks in communities of Kankara local government area of Katsina state.
The latest incident which occurred on Thursday involved a commercial vehicle which came under bandits attack near Dan Marke village along Kankara – Marabar Kankara road while returning from a market.
A resident told our reporter that five persons were killed on the spot, including the driver simply identified as Dan Mashi, while others who sustained gunshot injuries were receiving treatment at a hospital. Read more
‘Pay or get disconnected’, DisCo gives June 3 deadline to customers (Channels)

United States, Britain strike Houthi targets menacing Red Sea shipping (UPI)
American and British forces carried out “defensive” strikes against Houthi targets in Yemen and the Red Sea destroying eight drones, the first attacks against the Iran-backed rebels after a pause of more than three months.
The strikes on Thursday afternoon were launched because it was determined the unmanned aerial vehicles and the other targets in Houthi-controlled areas and above the Red Sea “presented a threat to U.S. and coalition forces in the region,” U.S. Central Command said in a post on X.
“These actions are necessary to protect our forces, ensure freedom of navigation, and make international waters safer and more secure for U.S., coalition, and merchant vessels.” Read more

Germany has joined Joe Biden in giving Ukraine the green light to strike back with its weapons at Russian military assets targeting Kharkiv.
Germany discussed with its allies Russian attacks on the Kharkiv region from positions in the immediately adjacent Russian border area, a government spokesperson said.

Someone killed this Toronto woman 25 years ago — now Niagara police know who did it (CBC)
It’s been a quarter of a century since someone killed 26-year-old Nadine Gurczenski of Toronto, and now the Niagara Regional Police Service (NRPS) says it knows who did it.
Staff Sgt. Andrew Knevel, who is in charge of the NRPS homicide unit, told CBC Hamilton that police used genetic genealogy to identify the killer as Joseph Archie (Raymond) Brousseau of New Liskeard in northern Ontario.
Brosseau was 34 and working as a truck driver when he killed Gurczenski, police say. He would have been charged with second-degree murder, but he died in 2017. Read more

The Alpine team’s long-standing operations director Rob White has left the F1 outfit as it continues its restructuring efforts in a bid to turn around its fortunes.

Scottish Premiership clubs have voted in favour of banning the use of artificial pitches in the top-flight.
The surface will be phased out by 2026 after a vote on the proposal was passed by at least nine of the 12 Premiership clubs.
