Elon Musk space rocket on collision course with the Moon (AlJazeera)

A chunk of a SpaceX rocket that blasted off seven years ago and was abandoned in space after completing its mission will crash into the Moon in March, experts say.

The rocket was deployed in 2015 to put into orbit a NASA satellite called the Deep Space Climate Observatory (DSCOVR).

Since then, the second stage of the rocket, or booster, has been floating in what mathematicians call a chaotic orbit, astronomer Bill Gray said on Wednesday.

It was Gray who calculated the space junk’s new collision course with the Moon. The booster passed quite close to the Moon in January in a rendezvous that altered its orbit, said Gray.

He is behind Project Pluto, software that allows scientists to calculate the trajectory of asteroids and other objects in space and is used in NASA-financed space observation programs. Read more

World remembers Holocaust as antisemitism rises in pandemic (ABC)

Commemorations took place amid a rise of antisemitism that gained traction during lockdowns as the coronavirus pandemic exacerbated hatred online.

Ahmed Musa: AFCON ouster has toughened us (Vanguard)

Captain Ahmed Musa has told thenff.com that though the Super Eagles’ exit from the 33rd Africa Cup of Nations was a hard one for the players, there is no time for any pity-party and the shock has only made the squad stronger as lessons have been taken on board for upcoming challenges.

“You know it is still a shock but I can assure you that things like these make a team stronger. We did our best in the circumstances. When you lose at a tournament, it hurts really bad. However, we don’t have time to keep reflecting over what went wrong.

“We have very important challenges in front of us, and all we can do is stay stronger and have firm belief in ourselves that we can do it. The focus is now on the World Cup play-off.”

Nigeria exited the 33rd AFCON after losing by the odd goal to Tunisia’s Carthage Eagles in a Round of 16 encounter in Garoua on Sunday evening.

On return to Abuja on Tuesday morning, Youth and Sports Minister Sunday Dare had a breakfast meeting with the contingent where he explicated that the Government was proud of the squad and its performance, “and how they comported themselves as ambassadors of our nation.” Read more

Southampton in talks over deal for Chelsea youngster Tino Anjorin (EveningStandard)

Southampton are in talks with Chelsea over a deal for academy graduate Tino Anjorin.

The 20-year-old is in the process of cutting short his loan deal with Russian side Lokomotiv Moscow before moving again this month.

Southampton, who have become a home away from home for Chelsea graduates, signed Tino Livramento on a permanent and Armando Broja on loan from the Blues in the summer. Furthermore, defender Dynel Simeu signed a three-year deal with Southampton after leaving Chelsea at the end of last season. Simeu this week joined Carlisle on loan for the rest of the season.

Both Livramento and Broja have been roaring successes on the south coast this season and the Saints are keen to make the latter’s loan permanent. Talks have been held this month in order to get ahead of other interested parties – including top four chasing West Ham – but a deal in the summer appears more likely. Read more

Sevilla say Newcastle offer for Diego Carlos ‘insufficient’ and talks are over (Guardian)

Sevilla have ended negotiations with Newcastle over Diego Carlos and do not expect the central defender to depart during the transfer window. Final conversations between the clubs were held three days ago, with Newcastle’s offer rejected because it was insufficient and Sevilla would not have been able to adequately replace him at short notice.

Sevilla’s sporting director, Monchi, admitted that had the offer arrived in the summer it might have been different but he considers this market closed. The only way Newcastle could sign Diego Carlos would be to pay his €70m (£58.4m) buyout clause. Monchi said the defender was happy at Sevilla and the captain, Ivan Rakitic, insisted “sometimes it is a big opportunity but Diego and other players know what they have here”.

“The offer was very important, respectful, but it was an offer that our board considered insufficient,” Monchi said during a conference call set up by La Liga. “It is also true that it was maybe not the best time. It’s a difficult market in which to find a replacement for him. If the offer had come in the summer, things may have been different. Jules [Koundé] is a magnificent player and I would say the same about Diego Carlos. I think he is one of the top five central defenders in Europe.

“I was talking to Diego Carlos this morning and he was happy,” Monchi added, joking: “Given how strong he is, if he wasn’t I might have had to change my mind. Read more

McIlroy heads straight for the range after mixed opening round of 71 (IrishTimes)

Rory McIlroy’s immediate destination after completing his first round of the Dubai Desert Classic with an up-and-down 71 – four birdies and three bogeys – to trail Denmark’s Joachim B Hansen by six strokes was the driving range at Emirates Golf Club to work on his swing.

“I just need to tidy up a few things,” said McIlroy, in outlining a round which included “a couple of loose shots . . . . (and) a couple of bad decisions, or mental mistakes, and maybe a couple of bad swings in there as well.”

McIlroy, a two-time winner of the tournament in the past, in 2009 and 2015, picked up three birdies in his opening five holes – the 11th, 13th and 14th – but suffered a bogey on the par five 18th, where he hit his approach into the lake, and suffered further bogeys on the second and seventh holes. “Just those last few holes, I feel like I bogeyed three of the easiest holes on the course,” said the world number eight.

Pádraig Harrington actually enjoyed the distinction of being the low man among the quartet of Irish players in the Rolex Series event: the Dubliner overcame an early bogey, on the par five third where he drove into a bush down the left, to record birdies on the 13th, 16th and 17th holes in a strong homeward run to sign for a 70, two-under-par. Tyson Fury accused of refusing Oleksandr Usyk fight despite Anthony Joshua offer (Mirror)

Eddie Hearn has blamed Tyson Fury for the collapse of a deal for him to face Oleksandr Usyk while branding him a “walking contradiction”.

However it now looks likely Fury will face Whyte next after the deal collapsed with purse bids expected to take place on Friday after several delays.

Joshua’s promoter Hearn has placed blame on Fury for the clash and has claimed that the champion wanted an interim fight before staging any undisputed tilt with Usyk. Read more
