Robbers attack POS shop, kill couple in Imo (Channels)

The Imo State Police Command, on Monday, confirmed the killing of a couple by armed robbers, while attempting to rob a point-of-sale (POS) shop along Egbu Road in Owerri, the state capital.

The police spokesman in the state, Henry Okoye, who spoke to Channels Television, said the command received a distress call last Sunday night that robbers had attacked the shop owned by “a young man”.

The assailants reportedly dispossessed the owner of the POS shop of his belongings and cash, in the process shooting the parents of the shop owner who came out to intervene before making away with the loot. Read more

Newly sworn-in Minister of Tourism, Lola Ade-John, on Monday knelt before President Bola Tinubu after signing the oath of service.

The inauguration of the new ministers was held at the State House Conference Centre, Abuja.

During the event, Ade-John signed her oath of service register, before walking to where the President sat and knelt before him, then shook hands with him. Read more

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has threatened to embark on demolition of houses built illegally.

The minister said this in his inaugural address at the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) office on Monday.

The Chairman of the Senate Committee on Appropriations, Solomon Adeola, on Monday, said soldiers operating checkpoints around the Ikeja axis of Lagos state allegedly robbed and killed his aide, Adeniyi Oluwatosin Sanni, on Saturday, August 5, 2023.

Senator Adeola made this revelation in a statement he personally signed and made available to reporters in Abuja through his media aide, Kayode Odunaro.

Shortly after the incident, Adeola said he had information that Sanni was stopped at a checkpoint around the Ojodu-Berger area of Lagos on his way to his home at Isheri by “security agents.” Read more

Neonatal nurse Lucy Letby, who is the UK’s most prolific child serial killer in modern British history, has been given a whole-life sentence.

The 33-year-old was convicted of murdering seven babies and attempting to kill six other infants at the Countess of Chester Hospital.

Letby deliberately injected babies with air, force fed others milk and poisoned two of the infants with insulin. She refused to appear in the dock for her sentencing hearing. Read more

Charles Martinet, the iconic voice of Mario for more than three decades, is “stepping back from recording character voices” for Nintendo as he transitions into a new role.

Now a “Mario Ambassador,” Martinet will travel the world and interact with fans on behalf of the gaming company.

Martinet started at Nintendo in 1991, and his first major performance as the mustachioed plumber was in 1996’s Super Mario 64, the landmark 3D platformer that introduced much of the world to Mario’s enthusiastic Italian intonation. Read more 

Ecuadorians vote for president, overseas voting system sees cyberattacks (VOA)

Ecuadorians put aside fears of leaving their homes amid unprecedented violence and voted for a new president Sunday in a special election that was heavily guarded by police and soldiers in part due to the assassination of a presidential candidate this month.

The country’s top electoral authority, Diana Atamaint, reported no violent incidents affected voting centres and characterized the election as “peaceful and safe” after polls closed.

However, Atamaint, president of the National Electoral Council, said the electronic voting system used by Ecuadorians living abroad was targeted by several cyberattacks, including from China, India and Bangladesh. She said the incidents did not jeopardize vote counts. Read more

Viktor Hovland put on such a phenomenal ball-striking display on Sunday that he left with a trophy.

The 25-year-old from Norway raced up the leaderboard on the back nine and stole the 2023 BMW Championship at 17 under after a dazzling 9-under 61 in the final round at Olympia Fields Golf Club in Illinois. Hovland made seven birdies over his final nine holes to shoot his career-low round and set a course record. Scottie Scheffler (66) and Fitzpatrick (66) finished T-2 at 15 under.

Scheffler was dripping sweat and confidence on the front nine after early birdies at Nos. 2 and 3 and another at the par-3 6th.
