Robbery convict gets 7 years jail term after appeasing victim (Punch)

A Lagos State High Court sitting at the Tafawa Balewa Square has sentenced a man, Madu Uche, to seven years’ imprisonment for armed robbery.

The convict had initially pleaded not guilty to three counts of conspiracy and armed robbery on October 6, 2021, when he was first arraigned.

However, on Tuesday, the prosecution team, led by Olayemi Shofolu, told justice Y.A. Adesanya that the defendant had agreed to plead guilty to the offences.

Shofolu also informed the court they had filed and executed a sentencing agreement which was to the knowledge of the attorney-general of the state. Read more

Lagos Task Force arrests nine armed robbery suspects, clears Olusosun dumpsite (Guardian)

The Lagos State Taskforce has arrested nine armed robbery suspects at Olusosun in Ojota axis of the state.

Also, the agency has, in conjunction with the Ministry of the Environment carried out a cleanup exercise of the refuse dumpsite.

The activity, spearheaded by the Chairman of the Task Force, Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP), Shola Jejeloye, was in furtherance of the state’s resolve to rid the city of all forms of environmental hazards and ensure that the citizenry lives in a clean, serene and pollution-free environment.

Jejeloye said that the dumpsite has been a known haven for criminal elements that engage in criminal activities, one of which is traffic robbery. Read more

Lagos sergeant killed my inspector husband with sword – Widow (Punch)

A police sergeant, Ukeme Asuquo, on Monday, appeared before Justice O.H. Oshodi of the Ikeja High Court over alleged murder of a police inspector, Francis Adekunle.

PUNCH Metro gathered that detectives from the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Yaba, Lagos, arrested the sergeant for allegedly inflicting machete cuts on the inspector.

Asuquo, who was attached to the Anti-Cultism Unit of the Lagos State Police Command, allegedly hacked Francis, who was attached to the Special Protective Unit, Ikeja, in their neighbour’s compound on Oyedeji Close, Agbale Kale, Aboru, Lagos.

The inspector later died at a hospital. Read more

Western marine customs hands over N168m seized Cannabis Sativa to NDLEA (Guardian)

The Western Marine Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has handed over Cannabis sativa estimated at N168 million,  seized on waterways within Lagos State to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

Addressing journalists yesterday during the handover of the items to NDLEA in Lagos, the Area Controller of the Command, Abubakar Umar, said the illicit drugs were intercepted from a wooden boat at Oko-Aja beach on March 30, after credible intelligence was made available to the Command.

He said upon physical examination and counting at the Command, the seized items was found to be 32 sacks containing 2,520 pieces of Cannabis sativa, weighing 1,437 kilogrammes with a street value of N168 million.

Umar said it was a case of prohibition, which contravenes Section 24(b) of the Customs and Excise Management Act (CEMA) Cap C45 LFN 2004 as amended. Read more

4 feared killed as Lagos cultists clash, rob residents (Punch)

There is tension in the Ebute Metta area of Lagos State after rival cults clashed in a supremacy battle that has lasted for three days.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the hoodlums looted shops and dispossessed residents of their valuables during the incident.

It was gathered that the fight was between the Kogbagidi Boys and Willoughby Boys.

The Kogbadigi Boys are led by one Tunde, aka Omo Aiye, while the Willoughby Boys are led by one Ase. Read more

Court dismisses rights breach suit against IGP, others (Independent)

An Epe Division of Lagos State High Court has dismissed a fundamental rights enforce­ment suit filed against the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) and some of his officers, by three indigenes of Ibeju-Lek­ki Local Government, Lagos State.

The presiding judge, Justice Wasiu Animahun, dismissed the applicants’ suit after perus­ing all the processes filed by the parties and considered submis­sions made by their counsel frivolous and lacking in merit.

Justice Animahun also awarded a cost of N250, 000, against the applicants, jointly and severally, in favour of IGP and five of his men.

The applicants in the suit marked EPD/11589M­FHR/2021, filed by their lawyer, Ufomba Chinemerem, are Ka­milu Ibilola, Ismaila Ibilola and Nurudeen Adegbose. Read more

Bizman laments as sister, boyfriend steal N14m from company (Punch)

A businessman, Leonard Chukwuma, has told a Chief Magistrate’s Court sitting at Ebute-Meta, Lagos State, how his half-sister, Adaku, and her boyfriend, Ikechukwu Eze, allegedly stole N14m from his company.

Chukwuma appeared before Chief Magistrate F. M. Kayode-Alamu on Friday as a witness in the case against Eze.

Eze and Adaku were alleged to have conspired in 2020 to steal the said sum from the complainant’s Talkpoint telecommunications company.

Chukwuma said his sister asked for N10m to fund a company she and the defendant founded.

20-year-old UNILAG student missing (Independent)

A 20-year-old University of Lagos (UNILAG) student identified as Arafat Ajayi has been declared missing by her parents and families.

The 100-level student of Educational Administration was said to have left home on Thursday, 26th May 2022, and is yet to return since then despite every measure of her guardians to locate her whereabouts.

Her guardian, Mrs. Adebimpe Ibrahim who spoke with Tribune Online said, “My daughter left home around 5 am on Thursday and since then, we have searched almost everywhere to locate her. We even reported to the Igbogbo police station, Ikorodu to help us find her, and we were told that it has been radioed to other units.”

“We are also intimating her university about the development but it’s just sad that we haven’t located her till now. I am losing it already and I don’t know how much more I can take if she’s not found,” she added. Read more

Two suspected traffic robbers nabbed in Lagos (Punch)

Officers of the Rapid Response Squad have arrested two suspected traffic robbers in separate areas in Lagos.

The suspects were nabbed around the Magodo Estate and Otedola Bridge areas in Lagos State.

One suspect, Korede Saheed, 29, was arrested on Thursday, while the other suspect, Yahaya Faisal, 22, was arrested on Friday.

Luck ran out on the suspects when their victims quickly reached out to the RRS officers on patrol in the area who arrested them and recovered one Samsung Galaxy S8 and one iPhone 12 from the suspects. Read more

Police nab fake revenue officials who extort Lagos motorist (Punch)

Operatives of the Rapid Response have arrested four fake revenue officials for extorting N50, 000 from a female motorist in Lagos.

The men were said to have posed as officials of the disbanded Lagos State Committee on the Removal of Abandoned Vehicles and impounded the vehicle of the motorist for ‘changing lanes’ at Alausa, Lagos, on Thursday.

In a statement by the state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, on Friday, two of the suspects, Adedire and Osunkoya, apprehended by the Police, had in 2020, defrauded a professor at the Lagos State University.

The Lagos Commissioner of Police, CP Abiodun Alabi, has directed the Commander, RRS, CSP Olayinka Egbeyemi, to charge the suspects to court at the conclusion of investigations. Read more
