Power-drunk DPO appears before panel, denies bribery allegation (Punch)
Punch Metro learnt that the DPO and other policemen alleged to have been involved in the raid were arranged for an identification parade before some residents of Alimi Ogunyemi Street, Ijaiye, who accused them of extortion.
It was gathered that Nwabuisi denied collecting money for bail, just as the residents insisted paying money to a police sergeant who allegedly handed over the money to him. Read more
Police Sergeant killed as mob vandalises patrol car (Nation)
A mob yesterday attacked a police patrol team on College Road, Ifako Ijaiye, Ogba, Lagos, killing a Sergeant, Esiabor Collins. The mob was said to be irked by the death of a youth earlier in the day.
The youth was allegedly assaulted by some policemen two weeks ago. He died in hospital yesterday.
The mob pounced on the patrol team after protesting at the Area ‘G’ Command, Ogba. Collins with service number 260326 died in the ensuing melee. Read more
Police nab armed robbery suspect on roof-top (DailyTrust)
A 34-year-old armed robber, Abiodun Oluwa, has been arrested hiding in the ceiling of his house when police came calling.
A locally made pistol with one cartridge was allegedly recovered from him.
Oluwa, an indigene of Atiporomeh, Badagry, was among 15 armed robbery suspects the police in Lagos had arrested in different parts of the state in the last three weeks.
During the operations, four suspects – Ezejah Oluchukwu, Tochukwu Samson, Ifeanyi Oshomi and Tochukwu Matthias – were also caught at the Abesan Estate, Ipaja, allegedly vandalizing cars.
The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, who paraded the suspects on Monday, said a Toyota Camry car registration number EKY 361 FC, 20 pieces of auto glass winding engine, three pieces of vehicle brain boxes, a car tarpaulin, two pieces of side mirrors, one black knife and one school bag were recovered from them. Police arrest customs officer for shooting motorist (Punch)
The police have arrested a customs officer for shooting a motorist at Iya-Afin checking point, Badagry, on Wednesday.
Police sources told the News Agency of Nigeria in Badagry that the customs officer (name witheld) allegedly shot the victim at the right arm because he allegedly refused to stop for a check.
According to the source, the motorist, who was coming from Seme Border, refused to stop at the check point and the officer opened fire which hit him at the right arm. Read more
Family, developer quarrel over land (Nation)
Who owns a large parcel of land at Sangotedo in Lekki-Ajah, Lagos State, which is a subject of dispute between a family and a developer?
The Oyemade Royal family of Sangotedo is laying claim to the land, which it accused the developer, Kelechukwu Mbagwu, of grabbing from it.
But Mbagwu denied the allegation.
Addressing reporters on Wednesday during the family’s protest in Oyetubo Jokotade Estate in Sangotedo, its lawyer, Tunde Popoola, asked that Mbagwu be brought to justice.
The protesters carried placards with inscriptions, such as: “How can an individual take laws into his hands?”; “Justice must be done”; “Kelechukwu Mbagwu is lawless”; “Kelechukwu Mbagwu is a land grabber”. Read more
5 in police net over cultist’s death, violent clash on Lagos Island (DailyTrust)
The police said they are interrogating five persons over their involvement in a violent clash that occurred last week between suspected hoodlums residing on Onola and Okepopo streets on the Lagos Island.
The two groups, alleged to be cultists and factional members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in charge of the numerous commercial motor parks in the area, are known as Okepopo boys and Onola boys. They have gained notoriety on the Lagos Island of engaging each other in violent clashes, many of which had claimed lives. Read more
How gift to mum exposed an armed robbery suspect (DailyTrust)
An expensive gift, which an armed robbery suspect, Badmus Yusuf, was said to have offered his mother, has exposed him to the police.
The police command in Lagos said that Yusuf had given his mother the gift, which was allegedly part of items members of his gang had stolen from a warehouse. Detectives had been investigating robbers’ invasion of a warehouse belonging to one Kingsley Ochoma, at Graceland Estate, Isheri-Osun, Lagos State, when they tracked two of the stolen handsets to the suspect’s mother, identified as Mrs Badmus, and to one Kareem.
During interrogation, Mrs Badmus and Kareem were said to have confessed that the stolen telephones were given to them by Yusuf as Sallah gift, unknown to them that Yusuf was a wanted armed robbery suspect.
Mrs Badmus and Kareem, according to the State Commissioner of Police, Mr Edgal Omihimi, led the operatives to Yusuf’s house, where he was arrested. Read more
Businessman laments unending police raids, extortion (Punch)
A Lagos businessman, Idowu Makanjuola, has lamented alleged victimisation and extortion by men of the Nigeria Police Force.
Punch Metro gathered that Makanjuola ran a viewing centre, among other businesses, in the Ijora area of Lagos State.
His predicament reportedly started in 2013 when he had a disagreement with one Emmanuel Chika, a customer. After the disagreement, Chika allegedly made allegations against Makanjuola and he was arrested by policemen from the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Yaba; Area B Command; Ijora Police Station and the Special Anti-Robbery Squad. Search for key witness stalls probe into alleged extortion against Lagos DPO (Guardian)
Frantic search for key witnesses by the probe panel recently set up by the Commissioner of Police Lagos, Imohimi Edgal, over allegations of corruption against the Divisional Police Officer in charge of Pen Cinema area of the state, SP Harrison Nwabuisi, has reportedly hit a brick-wall as efforts made to locate the key witness identified as Sherif Anjure seem to have failed.
Sources close to the investigating team led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of State Criminal Investigations and Intelligence Bureau, (SCIID), Panti, Yaba, Yetunde Longe, disclosed that unfolding events during their investigation revealed that contrary to the allegation that policemen that carried out the raid arrested suspects inside a mosque where worshippers were having Sallah prayers, no mosque is located within the area the raid was carried out at Alimi Ogunyemi street in Ifako-Ijaiye area. Nigeria Police storm hotel, arrest 57, accuse them of homosexuality (PremiumTimes)
The police in Lagos said they arrested 57 men for alleged homosexual activity at Kelly Ann Hotel/ Event Centre in Egbeda, Lagos, on Sunday morning. Imohimi Edgal, the state police commissioner, told journalists during a press conference Monday that police, led by the divisional police officers of Shasha and Idimu, acting upon an information provided by a reliable source stormed the hotal at 2 am.
“On arrival, young men numbering about 80 were met in a hall taking different types of drinks including banned substance like Tramadol, Shisha laced with substances suspected to be Marijuana,” Mr Edgal added. “When the men sighted the police, they took to their heels but the police arrested 57 of them.” Read more
