Wayne Rooney saw his spot kick saved in a penalty shootout as his DC United side were knocked out of the MLS play-offs by Columbus Crew.
The 33-year-old had inspired the Black and Red into the play-offs after joining the club when they were bottom of the Eastern Conference.
The Washington club were favourites to beat the Crew given their form going into the game but the two teams couldn’t be separated over 120 minutes in a 2-2 draw.
Rooney stepped up to take DC’s first penalty but saw his effort saved by Zack Steffen and the Crew eventually won 3-2 in the shootout.
Rooney’s DC side will not play competitively again until the regular season restarts in March but he’s ruled out a loan move back to Europe.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic, though, could be tempted by a move after his LA Galaxy side failed to make the play-offs. Read more
